5:45AM? Check.
Sandwiches made? Check.
GPS programmed (even though it's my sixth time)? Check.
Camera batteries charged? Check.
Compact Flash cards empty? Check.
Secret astronomy resources in wallet's hidden compartment? Check.
Overcast, grey day with rain in the offing? Che……WAIT? There isn't a cloud in the sky! It's cold but crisp and, above all, clear! IT CAN'T BE NEAF…..BUT IT IS!
As I have done for the last few years, I thought I'd put up some pics of the enjoyable day I spent at Rockland Community College yesterday. It was the usual mix of excellent presentations, drool-worthy equipment and unexpected bargains. It seemed to me to be as busy as any I've attended previously, and people seemed to be enthusiastic. Getting some solar observing always helps!
I was shooting RAW on a 7D (for the most part; a few were from my 5D "classic") and the file sizes are pretty big. So forgive me if you see any artifacts or what looks like poor color correction. There are four reasons for this: (1) CN requires file sizes to be smaller than 200kb, but I have found that often my images are rejected at around 160kb, so I made them pretty small. This means that I'm throwing away around 99.5% of the information… (2) RCC is a challenging place to shoot: it combines three difference kinds of ambient electric light with sunlight and a number of the vendors' and attendees' lights…. (3) I did these late last night on my woefully underpowered Mac Mini, which was….frustrating, and (4) There are some major system weaknesses behind my camera's viewfinder. This last is the most important and I'm afraid that upgrades can take a while.
Anyway, enjoy. It was a fun day.

1. NEAF organizer Alan Traino has a lot to think about on the day of the show. His role as a conflict arbiter is not well known. Here he is resolving a dispute between fans of oil and air spaced lenses.

Neil,
Thanks for posting these and I look forward to seeing your other pictures.
This is the second year I have missed NEAF due to family health issues. I have always enjoyed seeing all the latest and coolest stuff even if I couldn't (or wouldn't) afford it.
I'm hoping for a healthy 2013!
Cheers,
Ron

I'm guessing that's the case. I wanted to ask Yuri, but he was busy talking with other attendees each time I went by. I didn't want to take his time away from anyone who might actually be a potential purchaser. I do hope he puts something up on the TEC site, though.

I talked to one of the fellows at the TEC booth. The TEC 300VT-7 DEG f/1.44 astrograph has a projected price of $49,000 to $60,000 and the f/1.55 10 degree model over $150,000.

Sure is. He also had a propeller beanie on but wasn't wearing it for that pic. Omg it was hilarious. Leave it to the guys at AP to go 50's retro.

Fittingly for a company that leaves nothing to chance and pays so much attention to detail, AP's malted chocolate balls and other candies were the tastiest in the show!

Neil,
Thanks for the pics. You covered most of mine, with the exception of two small items that got my interest:
(1) the Vixen Polarie Star Tracker (a motorized camera mount)

Nice Pics- I thought that custom TEC astrograph is f/4.4 (not 1.44) and built exclusively for the attached camera. I could be wrong. Hard to interpet the label.
