Anyone else disappointed in NEAF 2012?
      #5200133 - 05/01/12 01:10 PM

I should preface this post by saying its always a great day to go to a telescope convention, and to be around some great guys and gals in the hobby.

This years gathering to me anyway, had a distinctly different feel however.

There were many "no show" booths or at least very late to open booths on the first day anyway. Many of the larger vendors booths were staffed by folks with very minimal knowlege (if you want to ask a technical question, you need to wait to ask that guy, over there (e.g. I still dont know how many version there were of the NP127). Many of the vendors also seemed to have quite a flustered air to them (said another way perhaps curt and short, even though the crowds were quite thin).

Lastly, I think the economy has taken a toll on the hobby, while there were lots of toys for the high dollar imaging crowd, I didnt see anything "new" at the show for the visual observer, especially one on a budget.

This is the first time I can say that I saw this happen..... in quite a few years in going to NEAF. The lack of any buzz in the forums here seems to bare that out.

Perhaps it was just me........

I still contributed to the hobby by buying from Night Sky Apparel, a subscription to the Sky at Night, and got a great deal on a David Levy comet hunter, in lieu of a midsized refractor that I had hoped would magically appear.

I too felt the atmosphere was much less jovial and more somber overall at NEAF 2012 than 2011 as well as being emptier.

it's not just you.

there were a couple of cool things but I was disappointed as well.

look even televue, the first day, where's the binoviewer showing off the enire new line of delos in the the binoviewer? the second day ok you got the binoview but why do you have 12mm Naglers in it. Bob the general manager said,"I only bought one each of the Delos."

don't you want to promote your new line with excitement?

now the solar party on the otherhand...

Watching the live webcam by the Astronomics booth I felt that when they annouced that attendance was greater than last year...I could not believe it. Maybe attendance was up ...but.. people walking out with merchandise was few and far between. The last Winter Star party was also less amateurs attending and this could be the economy taking its toll.
Just my opinion...however..without mentioning names some vendors also felt spending was down!

I went to NEAf 2012 for first time and it overall is great! Few things that I am not happy is that few booths is empty and Sky Shed Pod booth dont have Sky Shed Pod for display that I want to see it. They gave me just paper of information and order Sky Shed Pod. B+H Photos booth is open is only on Sunday. Many astronomy books are expensive and I got two good books. Good to see all Meade, Celestron, Tak, etc to display all telescopes. Peterson Engineering and EZ Bin0c mount kit is real good and I plan to order one for myself. Suffern town streets is trickly and even GPS tell me where to go and I passed small sharp turn streets and went back to get right way to NEAF. Overall My sister, daughter and myself enjoy NEAF and looking forward next year.

While I really enjoyed the show and Alan and team did an excellent job. I was also disappointed, I think since 2011 was the best show ever, its hard to keep topping your self. The recession also has hit the astronomy community pretty hard. Its hard to send 5 people to NEAF when there is not a lot of money. The empty booths also surprised me. Lets hope that the 2012 turns out to be a better year for the amateur astronomy community. But I am also to fault, this year my hobby budget is down, in 2011 I spent over $2k (for a Lunt 60MM Scope and other goodies), this year I was way under. I wonder how many of us spent less this year? One of the biggest surpise was TEC, they only brought 2 scopes. I also missed APM not having a booth and when is Orion coming back? Aren't they one of the largest dealers.

I did; I spent nothing. I didn't go there to buy anything, though, so I wasn't disappointed. It's primarily a trade show, after all. Most exhibitors don't do any selling there. I was able to catch up on lots of new products being displayed and to chat with their producers and that was what I went there for. I want to be a well-informed consumer for the next time I go shopping (if I ever do). Those who were there to sell seemed to be kept pretty busy. In the two cases in which I know what they brought and what remained at the end of the show, they had done well.

I was also surprised by TEC, but that's because they had never appeared there before. They don't have a broad product line so two telescopes (one brand new and unexpected) seemed sufficient to me.

I guess it varies with your area of interest. A non-imager would walk by a large number of exhibitors without seeing anything of interest. Evolving technology creates new and/or improved imaging gear and designs every year but there probably isn't much to be done visually that isn't old news.

B&H is closed on Saturdays due to religious observance so that explains one vendor. However, I did notice many empty booths. There also was limited product on hand for my items of interest and I had to have items shipped so it is as if the vendors may have been expecting less sales.

I recognized several members of these forums, but not one of them introduced themselves. There seemed a lack of general friendliness.

The Solar party was the best ever. Did you see Venus in the 6" refractor?

Ray,

If I know who you are I will introduce myself. Sometimes you are in a conversation with someone you don't realize that someone you know is there. For example I didnt see John and I know who he looks like. If I knew who you were I would have said hello. I also had my kids with me and they are always running around. I did see and say hello to a lot of people that I had meet at prior NEAFs.

With the bad economic times, it might be a good idea to try something a bit different for NEAF 2013. Maybe with a focus on more of the science, clubs, and organizations themselves, rather than products. Provided nothing really new is anticipated.

I had a really great time this year, spent plenty of money, interacted with the Meteorite Men, enjoyed the talks, etc. Overall, it seemed less crowded. Notably missing was Orion. I am sad that TeleVue no longer has the blem sales, not that I would have bought anything, but it did seem to up the level of excitement in past years.

I think the economy is the major factor, so things may pick up next year or two.

This was my second NEAF. The first was 2010. Seemed like less "stuff" on display this year, but I still enjoyed the show. Well worth the trip. I thought the organizers did a great job, and I did catch some views of the sun Saturday in the AM. I was not disappointed one bit.

I also helped the "local" astro economy by jumping on a NEAF special scope, buying my first meteorite, and outfitting the family with the most geeky t-shirts I could find. All before 9:15 on Saturday.

Like I said, well worth it.

I sure wasn't disappointed in NEAF 2012. Purchased a couple of items, spent around $600 and I wasn't the only one. Talked to a good friend who was helping out at the Astronomics booth and he said they were sold out of scopes by Saturday afternoon. One thing that was a continuing disappointment (nothing to do with NEAF) for me is the astro mags. I stopped subscribing a few years ago, saying "Too much black holes and aliens", but I thought I'ld check out their booths and see if anything had changed. First I went to Astronomy mag's booth. They were giving away two of their latest issues. April issue cover - "Black Holes" & May issue cover - "Alien Life?". Had to chuckle and didn't bother with the other booth.

It may have seemed less 'busy' this year with fewer vendors, however the vendors selling things looked packed all day long. While some other vendors showing products looked bored quite often. I missed some of the higher end scope and equipment guys this year too. I do know some of them will be at AIC instead.

I only spend $250 but really was wanting to be 'sold' a new CCD camera. I was not offered enough of a discount to make me whip out my cash, however to be fair this vendor was so busy all day long she did not have time to really talk with people other than to take their money.

It is a day long drive each way for me, but without a doubt worth it. I will be back next year.

Dean

BETTER NOT!!!! This was my 5th NEAF and as enjoyable as the 1st 4, if not better. I still spent and brought home a scope, eyepieces, filters and plenty of freebies for my club's outreach events.

Great job Alan, and thanks so much for the help in getting my new purchases out through the bay door.

No way! Why ?

The show was full of novelties and full of opportunities.

All the TV stuff was offered at almost 15% discount. I bought a DMK41 mono camera for $505 instead of the regular $630. There was a TOA130 in pristine condition for $4600 at Woodland Hills. If I didn't purchase an FSQ106EDX this time (which again was very nicely discounted ) I would have jumped on it. There was plenty of everything.

I don't really see what's there to complain about. If you guys lived in my country I am sure you wouldn't be complaining at all!

Alan, please don't be discouraged by the negative comments. You have done a terrific job in bringing in all those vendors. It must be very hard to convince them to buy a spot at the show, take all the trouble to ship their stuff, pay all the sales tax and still discount the prices to the end users. Please keep up the good work!

Yes! And I hope that nobody misunderstood my earlier comment about buying nothing this year as implying that I saw no bargains. I just wasn't shopping for anything. My last three major telescope purchases were at NEAF 2009, 2010, and 2011 and those deals were terrific.

From what I gathered the show was another success (thank you Alan). I did notice though that there was not a lot of NEW visual stuff out there. Some vendor booths were smaller in relation to years past.

From a vendor stand point it was a terrific year for Explora Dome. All 4 observatories were sold en route to the show. And lets not get into the orders that loaded up quickly Saturday morning. And heck, the products we have are not really cash and carry.

Alan and I have a very nice surprise lined up for next years NEAF. Alan, mums the word.

This year I had the opportunity to enjoy the solar party on Sunday. One word "Amazing".

Clear skies, and thanks everyone for a record year.

One think to remember: last year the solar viewing was awful, and this year it was OK on Saturday, spectacular on Sunday morning, and still good Sunday afternoon. Also there were a lot more scopes. As a result a lot more people were out on the “solar field”, for longer, meaning that they couldn’t be walking around the main floor.

Did you guys go to a different show? I’ve been to all but 3, and I found NEAF 2012 very exciting…… perhaps partly because a group I’m a part of, Kopernik Observatory, had a booth for the first time this year.

Astronomics cut back (for this year only for personal reasons), POD had already said that they were too busy with deliveries to send an example, Marcus said that he was concentrating on Lunt this year, B&H was closed on Saturday (but so is the store, and most NYC camera stores - for the Sabbath). Orion has only been to one NEAF, and that was a year that they were showing a lot of proto-type Dobs (which generated a lot of negative comment right here in CN). There have been “empty booths” every year.

Books? Cambridge University Press were offering a substantial discount, and I bought a slightly damaged copy of “The Secret Deep” for less than half price.

On the flip side, I saw lots of good merchandise at the “stores” like Woodland Hills at discount prices (sales tax hidden and no shipping too), including much solar gear. Vixen seemed to be showing more, Meade had the very latest, Explore Scientific had more stuff than in the past, including a large trailer full of some nifty new products (including two new carbon fiber APO’s not yet in production – I just may get the 80mm) and a mid-size Dob. The ES rep also discussed with me their in-development flattener/reducer lens that will provide a full 40mm field with the ES127ED. There were GEMs from a new Korean company, and SBIG was showing a brand new camera line. The display of “classic scopes” was great. All of the presentations I attended were great, and Astronomical League, IDA, ASP & Night Sky Network had representatives and separate special events.

Magazines? In addition to the usual Sky&Tel, Astronomy, Astro Tech Today, and Amateur Astronomy, the UK magazines showed up for what I believe is the first time this year.

Don Yeier of VERNONscope was offering a few Brandon ‘blems’ and a number of antique items at what he claimed were “loss” prices, and he would go down in price as he talked. The SARD binoculars he had went in the first hour of the show.

I certainly came home from NEAF 2012 a “happy camper”, with lots of ideas for my future observing projects and gear.

I spent less than usual ($100 for a 2" TMB diagonal and $268 for a Catsperch 'MiniPerch' chair plus a few minor things), but I also brought along four friends/family members rather than the usual ONE.

We all had a great time. Sounds like they all will be joining me again next year.

Boy you guys are tough! Attendance was up, Vendors are telling me they did better than ever.... I'm sorry if a company doesn't show up, as there are many reasons that could make that happen. Sickness, death, etc etc . So if you were disappointed, I'm sorry. The job is open anytime... next year think what you can do to help promote our amazing hobby and help me spread the word to our youth.....

I saw more vendors enjoying themself more than ever before...

I had a GREAT time! Our booth was very busy AND I had a very nice time looking at (and purchasing) some of the neat stuff on display. I will admit it was my first year - but it will not be my last!!!

I want to clarify my earlier statement, I was disappointed in that several booths were empty, but as I don't know the situation with the vendors (some one may have been sick) its to be expected. But like usual NEAF is the best astronomy show period. The kids and I get there at 10am and stay until 4PM and my kids never want to leave and I am going back next year and hope to pick up the new Lunt Eyepieces for Solar and get an SBIGG camera (and my annual pilgrimage to Defiant Brewery). From speaking to the vendors many of them made very good sales and they all had what equipment I needed (DMK 41 and Astronomik RGB-L filters). If you have never been there, you really should attend. Alan and team make every effort to have people enjoy themselves and it shows. Maybe we should follow Alan's advice, lets invite more of our astronomy clubs, more of our attendees to come, without us (the amateur astronomers) many people will never see a planet, a cluster or a galaxy with their own eyes.

George,

I would not read to much into what some say. At Explora Dome we have had record sales over the past 12 months. This includes a route truck every few weeks. It was busy enough at the shop that Dan the owner stayed behind to fill orders. Yet we still had SOLD units on display again. (Sold en route to the show).

The show overall was good. Though I did not see anything new that jumped out and said buy me.

Just sayin,

NEAF 2012 was GREAT! We had an awesome time, especially Saturday morning. We had just as much traffic and interest in our booth than any other NEAF we've been to. I tried to put on as good a showing in our booth as possible with 5 Truss-Dobs and 3 of our STS scopes, one of which was raffled off in the Kids Raffle. People love seeing the big wooden Truss-Dobs and as the only vendor that attends NEAF we try our best every year to put up a good assortment.

Keep up the good work Alan! Can't wait for NEAF 2013!

You're very welcome! Ironically kids like your son will be looking through this scope more often than the actual owner of the scope. This scope was purchased by "Pearl Observatory" for use as their primary public outreach instrument that they'll use at hundreds of elementary school, library and scout group programs every year where thousands of kids will look through it. Eyepiece height was a strong consideration when spec'ing this scope out for them.

My family was Alan's "volunteer neaf-fer and neaf-ettes" and we had a blast more this year than ever. Alan, dude, u da man!!!!!

My wife and I thought the same that the economy is taking a toll on venders as well as end users- including me. There was something that I really needed but decided to hold off until my family is stable again. So, I think there are lot of us - and venders - who are going through the tough times.... Let's not get discouraged or pessimistic, keep your head up and look for the clear, beautiful day and night skies.....

I must say though, Sunday solar was THE BEST!!!!!

My biggest complant was a lack of product knowledge by some vendors. Case in point I was interested in a Baader ceramic Herschel Wedge. They make two types, visual and photographic. I asked a lady at the OPT booth if I could use the "P" version visually. She wasn't sure and asked another sales person to assist her. I was then told I could not use the "P" version visually as it comes but would need an additional filter that is not yet available . The price was good but adding another filter made it too expensive. I walked away and went to High Point Scientific. They knew the product and it does not require any additional filters. Made my purchase and was asked to call Grant and let him know how I liked it. It's been raining every day since Sunday.

Well I was a bit surprised to see the original subject line posted here. I think the only way I could be disappointed with NEAF would be if I didn't get the chance to go. NEAF is always a good show (have been going for about 7 years) and my only wish is that I could spend more time there.

Given how small of a market amateur (and semi-professional) astronomy is, I do not think it is realistic to expect to see new and more "stuff" every year (even though I saw LOTS of new stuff this year). To me, that's not really what the show is about, as much as it is to meet and talk with the people who make and promote the stuff.

Were there empty booths or missing vendors? I didn't even notice. There were many booths that I didn't even get a chance to visit since I ran out of time, and I didn't even take in one talk this year.

It was a great show this year and I'm looking forward to next year's NEAF.

Perhaps less exciting due to the relative lack of new gear coming out. I am looking forward to watching neaf videos later. I hope their wasn't less recording due to the smaller show. I did not attend this time around.

Several CN members have posted videos already. Unfortunately, we of the CN webcam crew were unable to do our usual walk-around (narrated by Tom Trusock) this year due to a stupid combination of technical and timing issues (including the school having problems with their internet connection pretty much all day Saturday). Nothing to do with the "smaller show" -- it wasn't a smaller show, there's an empty booth or three every year -- just other issues.

I know everyone watching live missed not having it, it's always a popular part of the live webcast, and also those who are unable to watch live like to see the archived video but alas, our 5th year of webcamming was just not an error-free year.

Saw info on a couple of new CCD camera platforms not yet available. Might have been more, as there were several CCD producers there with whose product lines I'm unfamiliar. Saw several brand new optical tube designs. I don't believe I've ever seen so many products new to NEAF. I don't mean to harp on this, and I'll shut up now. I just hate to see these internet rumors get started.

I could add that Explore Scientific had two new prototype carbon fiber APOs (with rotating focusers) and a new 14 or 15 inch lightweight Dob. The Astro Physics 175mm APO was new to me anyway…… how long have they had this in the works?

I'm with jcrilly, especially where mounts are concerned - there were several new mounts from known manufacturers (Meade and AP, to name 2), and mounts from new manufacturers. Explore Scientific also quietly showed the prototype EQ mount from last year, which I found to be quite innovative; I had a great conversation at NEAF 2011 with its designer.

There were many new scopes in attendance, from Stellarvue, Meade (all theirs except the solar scopes were new), TEC, Explore, and others. Rob Teeter floored me with the variety of offerings this year (does he EVER sleep?)

Frankly, I wasn't a bit disappointed with NEAF 2012 (my 5th); I expect some years to dazzle with new and innovatove products and some to be less so.

Whether this is a trend or not remains to be seen, but one difference (NOT declination) from last year appears to be that while last year was the Year of the Giant Dob, this year, with its new Meade lineup and many new offerings of computerized mounts, appears to be the Year of the Imager.

Whatever happened between last year and this year, Orion seems to have axed both its super giant line of Dobs, as well as its over 16 inch ultralight Dobs.

All this would make sense. With light pollution getting worse and gas prices staying high, astrophotography is an increasingly attractive option for the many who can't often get to the dark skies that the really big Dobs need.

But if one is concerned about the next generation of star gazers, the good old visual 8 inch SCT on a tracking/Goto mount may be the best bet for starters in the hobby.

I enjoyed myself at NEAF 2012.
It was the first NEAF I have been able to attend, even though I live so close. I had a good time talking with vendors, (and spending too much money) As well as the Solar Party Saturday. I found everyone friendly, CN members and others. I could not attend Sunday but will try to make NEAF 2013.

In my case, the biggest problem was getting there consumed the bulk of any spending money I had. I still got a few things, but not what I would have without the large transportation expense. If there were a SouthWest Astronomy Forum, I think a large sector of the community could show, and the skies would be good enough to have a star party. Every single major prime I asked refused to consider setting a scope up outside for night due to previous experience with poor seeing. I have no idea if the vendors would support such a thing in its first year, though. I am thinking the time to have it would be September-October. There's a pretty high density of astronomers out this way.

I had imagined it would be really easy to meet a bunch of the CN people I've met, but the only ones I located were Sedat (and it was really nice to meet a non-total stranger!) and Jason B. The only other attendees I had real conversations with were people I just struck up conversations with. I may have bumped into half the CN crowd at the conference or not one. I really don't know.

I've been asking myself if I'd go back, and I keep coming back to I could have just bought the AP flattener or that complete set of Brandon eyepieces in a beautiful case if the airline, hotel, and car rental agency hadn't walked off with that cash. As it is, I don't have either, and didn't get to meet my peeps, anyway.

Have you seen the vendor forum lately? Mike Bieler, the owner of Astronomics, started a thread a couple-three or so weeks ago about trying to hold a forum/expo in Norman, OK - probably not until next year to have time to plan properly, probably in late Sept. or early/mid Oct. So there's hope!!

Also, even though their new building will open at the end of May, they're going to have a grand opening with some vendors there (Televue, Meade and others have been mentioned), probably middish-Sept. There's a thread about that in the vendor forum too. That might be a bit far for you, but just as an FYI...

Sorry I, and so many of the rest of us on the CN helper team working the CN and Astronomics booths, missed you at NEAF. There were, as always, quite a few of us from the moderating team helping out. If you come to NEAF again, make sure you stop at the booths (I'm sure you did) and pretty much anyone working there is from CN, or at least Astronomics. We don't bite...much....

Back to original topic. It is not against the TOS to express disappointment.

I think I needed to see NEAF, but unless I started earning a lot more cash, the travel cost is a big deal. Please don't think I'm crestfallen or anything- I learned a lot, and that's what I really went there for. I'd thought it would be easier to find the CN folks. I did get a field flattener to play with from Astronomics, and to meet Jason B.

I'm not sure what I'd be doing on a second outing to NEAF. The curiousity factor is largely taken care of. I'd like a real star party. That's what makes me wonder about getting one together out here in the west.

Well, I dunno- the people I saw who were out for religious observance, despite being the largest dealers of general purpose optical equipment, just brought a pile of hats in one case and a pile of catalogs in the other. So, it wasn't like they were really there, anyway. Frankly, that was disappointing.

Well I for one was VERY disappointed!

Disappointed I could not be there as a Vendor.

Disappointed I could not be there as a member of the public.

Disappointed that I couldn't see old friends.

Disappointed that I couldn't be the one calling my mates to tell them what I got at NEAF (thanks lads, you made me more miserable ).

Alan and the team never fail to amaze and I would be surprised if this event was any different. Same goes for Bob Moore and his team at NEAIC (why did my new job have to start THAT week?).

I don't think Astrolaugh will make NEAF 2013 but I do hope its owner will

Jason, it was good to meet you as well.

I'll see what I can make that flattener do on the sun this weekend.

My only disappointment was that I wanted to meet BillP of the Eyepieces forum, but everyone I saw had two eyes.

I wanted to thank Al Nagler for the Ethos eyepieces I won in a Stellafane raffle a couple of years ago, but he was busy, so I had a nice conversation with David Nagler instead. I chatted with the Questar folks, who I hadn't seen in a while. I met Art Ciampi of TNR (Takahashi) and saw some nice equipment. I chatted with the folks who make Sky Safari and SkyFi, which I recently purchased. Said hello to Don Yeir and got on the list for a 4mm Brandon. I met a few guys from the Classic Telescopes forum and drooled over some classic eyepieces I can't seem to find on the market. I got a Pentax XW and a set of XOs at a good price. I walked till I was too tired to walk, then put my goodies in the car and came back for the solar star party just as the clouds came in, but that was my bad timing.

I had a great time. Attendance seemed high to me, and the floors were crowded. I've stayed home the last two times, but I'll be back next year.

2012 was my first NEAF and I was generally pleased - beautiful scopes, nice people, good, well attended lectures. My only disappointment was the lack of equipment for the beginner\intermediate user. No binoculars except a few at Celestion and one at Vixen ( a very nice one.)

I was specifically interested in seeing 8" dobs - there were none! Closest was the 10" Skywatcher at Celestion but no Astro-tech, Orion, Zumell, etc.

It was my 18th or 19th NEAF, and no complaints here. I thought it was an excellent year. Lots to see and lots of folks to talk with, and the NEAF Solar Star Party was real icing in the cake on Sunday.

Clear skies, Alan

This was my first time at NEAF so I don't have much to compare it to but I thought it was fantastic.

I was part of the Cloudy Nights Classic Telescope Display and really enjoyed meeting several of the frequent posters on that forum along with everyone else who stopped by to discuss the Classics on display and scopes they owned, past and present. Thanks again to Alan for providing the space for this.

I bought a new Point Grey Flea 3 camera and a Canyon Diablo meteorite from the Meteorite Men, whose show on Sunday was hilarious.

I'm already looking forward to next year!

I spent over $3K at NEAF (my first outing to it) this year. OPT did very well by me (but they always have, even via mail order), as did Starlight Xpress.

But then, imagers have always been the "high end", while visual observers get their toys for less (glass envy notwithstanding).

I noticed lots of expensive items flying off the shelves at the OPT booth (notably, the Canon 60Da sold out quickly), and I noticed that Point Grey and others spent a tidy sum on promotion.

If this year was "disappointing", I think I'd have loved to have seen 2011. If I was disappointed by anything, it was the NEAIC focus on planetary imaging (something I have little interest in).... but then that was said to be based on feedback from prior years.

I'll definitely be back, for both NEAF and NEAIC.

Jeff

Why not have badges that identify people as being part of affinity groups so if you walk by, say, a blue-badged person you'll know she's a CNer.

The International Dark-Sky Association has stickers to put on your badge/self. Perhaps Cloudy Nights could have "name tags" where we could write our aliases.

When’s the last time you priced out a sub F/4 25+ inch Dob with GoTo? Twenty grand just might get you one….. not counting the trailer, etc.

Then there are guys like me who do both. I’m lucky to have the co-owner of a leading CCD camera maker as a friend and fellow astro club member, not to mention a key to a public observatory with a 20-inch RC Cass and 6-inch Astro-Physics refractor.

NEAF 2012 was fantastic this year! Great attendance and energy. A couple of vendors were delayed getting their shipments out to NEAF which may account for a couple of booth areas not being properly set up.

Well, I think the badge idea is superb. Better yet, real name, screen name, and maybe one or two areas of interest? Having never been, I hope to attend in 2013. But having something similar nearby would also be wonderful.

I created (with a lot of help from the mod/admin corp) the official CN badges we used at ASAE:

I've volunteered to put together CN badge files for NEAF; I'll include the official NEAF header, if I can get permission from the show's producer.
As I won't be attending (and I don't have a decent color printer, anyway), someone will need to print them up, buy badge holders and lanyards, and figure out a way to distribute them.

I need to get the OK from Fred Bieler ("frebie") to use the CN logo again - but as he approved its use (and the final badge layout) for ASAE, I don't anticipate an issue.

There were over 4000 attendees at NEAF 2012! Most in history! Beat 2011 by over 600 attendees!
Reason it may have looked empty are: More vendors with more booths using more floor space, more speakers with standing room only attendence, and of course the very well attended Solar Star Party which takes place in the courtyard!!!

2013 expects to be better than ever!!! Be there or be...you know...left out!!!

Yes I have thought the same. Why not wear a badge with our cloudy nights alias with our real name. This is perfect. I wondered while wandering around NEAF 2012 how many people are members of this very forum. I then thought it would be a great idea to have a badge much like you are proposing.

Thanks for putting this together. And if we can ge the word out on the site then all who attend will sport one of these bad a$$ badges and we can all actually see who we have already met in cyberspace!

Thanks. They worked well at ASAE; I met several CNers that I otherwise wouldn't have recognised.

I'll start a sign-up thread in this forum first week of March, and leave it open for a couple of weeks - anyone thinking of attending NEAF should know by then if they're going or not. It takes me some time to put together the badge graphics, so I want at least a couple of weeks after the badge request thread closes to guarantee that I get them finished on time.

Again, I won't be attending (can't afford to), so someone(s) will need to print up the badge files and volunteer to distribute them. For ASAE, I emailed the badge files to Ron (Rboe) and Steve (Watermaster), who printed them. Steph bought the lanyards, and I picked up the plastic badge holders. Ron, Steph, and I put them together at the event, and handed them out from the CN/Astronomics booth - which turned out to be a great way to meet fellow CNers.

I've been there often including 2012 though my pilgrimage had become a bit spotty. I found 2012 great, better than some other years but it's all subjective. Yes some vendors were missing, for me most notably Starlight Xpress. But I got to meet up with some old friends I haven't seen I years...and yes some I avoided. And the weather held out. Lot's of great freebies by the way.
