Origins of an Observatory Name
      #2876889 - 01/20/09 09:55 AM Attachment (35 downloads)

Hi All,

This was my first Observatory, it was a tin shed
(Sears Lawn Building)with the help of my late dad
and friends from the local Astronomy Club we poured a cement slab then erected the shed over it. we modified the roof into a roll off roof.

It worked fine for about a year then one time a tremendous wind storm came through and ripped the shed apart.

So the name Windy Ridge Observatory was born.

Alan ( Sorry for the poor photo as it is scanned from an old slide.)

Mine is called the DreamCatcher. It is fitting inasmuch as it would not have been possible, without so many CN people coming together to make my Dream come true!

Dream Catcher is a cool name also.

A fitting name as we all dream about the stars and the wonders of the universe.

I make dream catchers.

Mine's called the Treehouse Observatory, because its on a second floor apartment balcony surrounded by Juniper trees. A nice little perch under the stars...

I was in on the ExploraDome early bird special so I knew a dome was coming and I was having a difficult time coming up with a name for my obs. I thought of local landmark names, like "The Cedar Creek Obs." or "The Barnaget Bay Obs." but they seemed a bit too hokey and I wanted something original.

I was at a loss .... until my son came home from college.

The first weekend he was home a bunch of his friends came over to party a little. I was on the computer cranking out tunes when I hit the Credence Clear Water Revival folder and played "Bad Moon Arising"!

That was it ... Bad Moon Observatory had a name!!

Mine's called Blue Spruce because:
3. That's the name of the street I live on.
2. We have a couple of Blue Spruce's, and
1.The most important reason, the Blue Spruce is my wife's favorite tree.

Hi Chris,

Keeping one wife's happy is a very important rule of thumb.

Blue Spruce is a good name also.

Man, that's cool Chris,

Steve(Spoonsize) sure is a skilled person.

I've often thought of creating a logo for mine,
but haven't had the time lately.

Mount Jennings Observatory was named after the facility mentioned in the famous War of the Worlds radio broadcast. The story of WHY it was named Mount Jennings is part way down the page.

My Mother was Irish Born...and had, along with the Brogue, those big, wonderful, sparkling, smiling eyes ...

After she passed away I spend a lot of evenings out under the stars looking up and just talking to her..

Got me re-interested in astronomy...

When my Obs needed a name I could not think of a more appropriate name then "Smiling Irish Eyes Observatory"

I still take the time to have a few words with Kathleen (Mom) every single night ..

Hi Don,

War of the Worlds radio broadcast one of the all time best SCI_FI radio shows ever.

It's very interesting to see how people came up with their Observatory names.

Thanks for the link.
