Origins of an Observatory Name
      #2876889 - 01/20/09 09:55 AM Attachment (35 downloads)

Hi All,

This was my first Observatory, it was a tin shed
(Sears Lawn Building)with the help of my late dad
and friends from the local Astronomy Club we poured a cement slab then erected the shed over it. we modified the roof into a roll off roof.

It worked fine for about a year then one time a tremendous wind storm came through and ripped the shed apart.

So the name Windy Ridge Observatory was born.

Alan ( Sorry for the poor photo as it is scanned from an old slide.)

Mine is called the DreamCatcher. It is fitting inasmuch as it would not have been possible, without so many CN people coming together to make my Dream come true!

A fitting name as we all dream about the stars and the wonders of the universe.

I make dream catchers.

Mine's called the Treehouse Observatory, because its on a second floor apartment balcony surrounded by Juniper trees. A nice little perch under the stars...

I was in on the ExploraDome early bird special so I knew a dome was coming and I was having a difficult time coming up with a name for my obs. I thought of local landmark names, like "The Cedar Creek Obs." or "The Barnaget Bay Obs." but they seemed a bit too hokey and I wanted something original.

I was at a loss .... until my son came home from college.

The first weekend he was home a bunch of his friends came over to party a little. I was on the computer cranking out tunes when I hit the Credence Clear Water Revival folder and played "Bad Moon Arising"!

That was it ... Bad Moon Observatory had a name!!

Mine's called Blue Spruce because:
3. That's the name of the street I live on.
2. We have a couple of Blue Spruce's, and
1.The most important reason, the Blue Spruce is my wife's favorite tree.

My Mother was Irish Born...and had, along with the Brogue, those big, wonderful, sparkling, smiling eyes ...

After she passed away I spend a lot of evenings out under the stars looking up and just talking to her..

Got me re-interested in astronomy...

When my Obs needed a name I could not think of a more appropriate name then "Smiling Irish Eyes Observatory"

I still take the time to have a few words with Kathleen (Mom) every single night ..

Hi Don,

War of the Worlds radio broadcast one of the all time best SCI_FI radio shows ever.

It's very interesting to see how people came up with their Observatory names.

Thanks for the link.

Even though "Hawkeye" is associated with Iowa, I named my OBS "Hawkeye Observatory" cause there was a pair of Red Tailed Hawks that used to nest in a huge pine tree across the street from me. They liked to roost in the trees behind my OBS & scan out into the fields looking for lunch. So I figured, Why not. That name is as good as any.

I think Jim (Oldsalt) coined "Horstman Observatory Cluster" or H.O.C. for short. Before that it was just the roll-off, the little roll-off and the dome.

The little roll-off is "The Tardis"

Well I was standing out on the deck after a day of construction and after a few beers (makes you smarter, etc) it just hit me and so I asked the wife and she liked it too. "The Observation Deck" just seemed to be right. But starquester I'm sory if you want to see my creation you will have to go to my other post here in observatories. Maybe some day I'll learn how to manipilate all these pictures.

I named mine "Headwater Observatory" because it is at the extreme headwaters of two rivers, one a major river, and near the source of three others, on a "sub-continental divide".

I named my existing observatory after the Spanish Land Grant of the area, Rancho La Ballona. Being a Spanish land grand, I figured the name should be in Spanish, hence "Observatorio de la Ballona."

There is also Ballona Creek, a small one-time creek now paved storm drain that goes through Culver City.

I was hoping I could get some ideas for naming my observatory. I don't really have any meaningful or heartwarming stories or events to use as an example and please, no pickle jokes , any ideas??? It'd be greatly appreciated!
It currently goes by the name of Brown Avenue Observatory, because I live on Brown Avenue. Not very catchy, or exciting, but it's all I could come up with!!

Thanks for any input!!

Robert, any interesting points of interest close by? Lakes, stream, Mountains? Any special night sky targets you are especially fond of?

Just start thinking "around you", and maybe something will come to your mind, for a name.

In the meantime, maybe members can throw their choice in the ring.

Back when I was first beginning to make real plans for an observatory, I was a bit traumatized when a tall microwave tower was built a short distance away. Convinced it was going to have a night-killing strobe light on top, I called it "The Eye of Sauron".

Turned out the the lights became slow-blinking red ones after dark, which was not such a disaster after all, but the baleful red glow was still worthy of the name.

So, "Eye of Sauron Observatory" became the natural name for my site, which of course inevitably led to my 16" scope being named "Sauron's Other Eye".

"Turkey Hill Observatory" was named after the large population of turkeys that casually stroll through our yard frequently. We have 30 or more at a time pecking away at the yard which creates some nice dead spots. We live on a high point in town and there actually is a "Turkey Hill" in town so we liked the name.

Here's the logo Spoonsize (Steve) made for us and we have a few shirts and cap with it on them.

I came up with "Peekaboo Ridge" because there's a ridge behind the obs that blocks a lot the eastern horizon and tall trees all around that make me do things like view Jupiter between tree limbs.

I like your old 8 inch Newt. I had a 6" and at the time longed for an 8.

Stargate 4173 at Grimaldi Tower.

My wife and I enjoyed the original Stargate movie (and follow on TV series) and thought that our observatory is definitely a gate to the stars.

4173 is the location of the observatory (41 degrees 36 minutes 49 seconds N, 73 degrees 40 minutes 16 seconds W).

Our cat, Grimaldi, passed away 3 weeks prior to construction so we named the tower in his honor.

I've never given naming my rooftop observatory a thought before now.

But it hit me, while reading this thread...

And so: Hatch Observatory

Not just because it lives under a roof hatch cover. But also because our house was built by Judge Hatch in 1887. So it's a memorial, too!

Thanks for looking!

Aguanga is an unincorporated community about 17 miles east of Temecula on California Route 79 South. Its "center" is where CA Route 371 heads north from CA-79 toward Anza, Idylwild, Palm Desert, and Indio. It is about 15 miles up CA-371 to Anza and 45 miles to Palm Desert.

The Lake Riverside Estates Clear Sky Chart will get you to a map of the area. Lake Riverside is in the Aguanga post office zip code area. It's about 8 miles up the hill from Aguanga proper. That is where I am building a new observatory that has yet to be named.

Probably too much information for a simple question, I guess.

Clear skies,

Mine is named Distant Thunder which congers up a lot of images. Sorry, but when I bought the paint for it, the little cardboard placard that has the paint number for the guy at Lowe's to know the mix also had a name on if for the paint. Yep, you guessed it, Distant Thunder. I thought it would make a pretty neat name.

I was briefly looking through "Observatorio de la Ballona". Where's Aguanga? I've never heard of it (and I grew up in La Canada Flintridge, so I'm familiar with southern California), although I do kind of know where Anza Valley is.

--Andy

Looking at the map you mentioned, I see Aguanga's not too far from Mt. Palomar; you might even get a distant view of the observatory there. If you do, maybe your new observatory can be called "Observatario Vista de Palomar." Or just "Vista Palomario Observatory"--I don't know if that would technically be correct in Spanish but it would be less cumbersome to pronounce.

The dome at Palomar is about 15 miles as the crow flies and is visible from my new observatory site. Here is a picture. The inset is a 2x magnification of the dome. There is a broad view of the mountain on my website.

I think your idea for a name is very good. I'll have to play around with that theme. It is also on the foothills of Cahuilla Mountain, so "Cahuilla Mountain Observatory" has been considered.

Thanks and clear skies,

I have never gotten around to coming up with a name for our observatory. At first glance the sign seems to be a name for it, but the sign was there long before the dome was finished in '03.

When we moved to Chiefland in '98, it was an astronomy community with 15 observatories in the neighborhood. The first thing I did was build another 36" Dob. It was named The Yard Scope II for obvious reasons, and the cedar sign was made for the fence near the gate.

Building an observatory in your yard is not a project to take lightly. The building will last a lot longer than the scope inside it, as scopes tend to come and go - not so with whatever monstrocity you build! It took me 4 years to decide what to build, and only 4 months to build it.

Now that it has been finished for 6 years, thousands of observers have had a chance to observe with us.

The original 36" Dob was rolled in and out of the workshop until it was replaced by the dome and new scope.

Jeannie often thinks that a good name for the observatory would be the same name the kids in the Robin Williams movie "RV" gave to the motorhome. I think it has something to do with the groans the dome makes as it is rotated around the sky.

Next time I come to Los Angeles and go hiking to the top of Mt. Lowe, a peak in the San Gabriel Mountains only about two miles from Mt. Wilson, if I can see Mt. Palomar, I'll wave to you! On clear winter days, you can see Mt. Palomar from parts of the Los Angeles basin; looking from Mt. Lowe or even driving on the I-210 from La Canada to Pasadena, it's quite prominent on the southeastern horizon, at least when smog doesn't murk the skies.

A local has told me that he has seen Mt. Wilson and Mt. Palomar at the same time from a local hilltop. On a clear, dry day, that just might be possible.

Mine is "Cnoc nan Rionnag" which is Gaelic, reflecting my ancestry. Idiomatically translates as "Star Hill" Observatory. I would note that I named it so in 1990 before I ever heard of the New Mexico Astro-tourism place.
For pronunciation, 'Cnoc' is pronounced like 'croc' but you have to roll the 'r'. The English word 'crag', for peak or summit derives from 'cnoc'. 'nan' is the prepositional phrase 'of the'. 'Rionnag' is, of course, 'star'. The female name 'Riannon' derives therefrom and would make a lovely name for an astronomer's daughter...

I had a hard time deciding upon a name for my observatory. I overlook a couple of holes of a local golf course and was thinking for a long time of a golfing theme as my dome looks like a plugged golf ball or a ball on a tee from a distance. Keeping things simpler, it dawned on me that the name of the farm that my lot was severed from 40+ years ago was Fairview Farm. Hence came the name of my Fairview Observatory.

We live in a fairly unique "development" which is actually 23 homes sharing about 250 acres. The builder cut a deal with the town to dedicate about 100 acres to perpetual conservation land, and the rest to our houses, most of which are all around 1/4 to 1/2 mile off the road.

The road is named Wilder Road, in honor of a late 18th century "noble citizen" of the early american revolutionary war timeframe. He owned all this land (and much more) and it was almost a little "burg" - had a cart path (early form of railroad), several dams/ponds for water power, etc. Anyways, the land had been known as "Wilder Farm" for hundreds of years.

I found out through our historical society that Sir Wilder was a close personal friend of Napoleon (yes THAT one), and he even had a small house built for him to "retire to" before that unfortunate (for him) incident on Elba!

So, with all that history, I figured that "Wilder Skies Observatory" would be a good and respectful name. Plus its kinda fun...

Not sure what a LOGO would look like, though? (for some weird reason I keep thinking something on the Lou Reed - take a walk on the Wilder side keeps popping up, but the visuals there might be scary!)

clear enough skies

Great fun reading this thread! Some very cool, and heartfelt names! I live in northwestern Massachusetts, the north boundary of my farm is the Vermont state line, the east boundary is the town line of the next town, and my observatory was just a deck in a hayfield for its first year, so with all that in mind, Borderline Observatory seemed a good choice. I wanted to name the farm Borderline Farm, but my wife thought that was going a little too far.........

At this point in time, I just want to let anyone who's interested know that I've decided to name my backyard observatory..."Brown Ave.Observatory." I appreciate the help I got from you all, and I did give it a lot of thought. It just seemed so easy, and so appropriate to call it Brown Ave. Observatory...mainly because we live on Brown Ave. That is where it's located...so why not!! Thanks again folks!!

It's not really a flashy or 'romantic' or even unusual, but I always seemed to be 'unofficially' calling it that, so why not...now it's official!!
