POD dome on a homebuilt base?
      #2927559 - 02/14/09 03:15 PM

Has anyone seen an observatory built utilizing only POD dome and mounting it onto a homebuilt wood building?

I searched on SkyShed's pages and didn't see anything like this in their 9 pages of photos. They list a POD dome w/ wheels only for sale on their pricing page, so it seems like this design is entirely possible.

Can't say as I have, they do sell the dome seperatly but with out any wheels or mounting ring. You may want to do a search or ask on the POD yahoo site.

I searched their site and did a number of Google searches and never came up with anything.

I'll look into their Yahoo group and see if there is anything.
I can't imagine why they would sell the dome separate without the intent of installing it onto a homemade base.

Why not just call the owner of Skyshed and ask if there are any units out there? If there are he would surely have contact information he might be able to pass on. I know in some cases quite a few owners of whatever product prefer to not be publicized. So asking on their Yahoo group should net you a broader response.

The SkyShed POD is a much lower price (to me anyways) and I really like their half-open dome design.

I'm just now exploring my options and getting design ideas. Probably going to build in 12 to 14 months, so I'll probably be asking sporadic questions here and there over the next year as I get things figured out. Bottom line is the price though, just graduated college 8 months ago so budget is key.

I encourage you to take into consideration as someone else mentioned for the price you get only the dome, you have to fabricate a mounting of some sort. With Explora Dome you get the wheels and mounting ring. The POD dome only shipped is over $1400 the Explora Dome shipped is $1700. Of course there are always cheaper ways to get a product and a year from now anything is possible.

Congratulations on graduating.

Hi Taylor

Yes this is possible, Wayne has a post at Observatory Central from which I quote:
Quote:

New - Low cost "Dome Only" option for "DIYs". $795 for dome only!

This is an old price, so you might want to check what they're doing it for now

Interesting, the web site shows $895.00, wonder if the $795 is the Canadian dollar sale price or an older listing. Either way, hold them to the $795.00 price now.

Good deal.

Looks like $895.00 is the current price of the dome only, in saying that, polymer prices have slipped big time in the last few months, so it might be worth seeing if Wayne can do it at the old price.

Steve,
After many, many years in retail marketing and advertising a listed or advertised price should be honored, even if only for ethics. Surely if a consumer went to the manufacturer with that information they would honor it that one time and then either pull or edit the listing.

Interesting scenario.

I'd look to see if the wheels are actually located in the dome section or if they are located in the wall sections... IF on the dome itself it would be a piece of cake...

Off Topic: BUT a guy named Richard replaced his Pod dome with another brand of dome a few years ago and he may be still hanging around here on CN...

He may still have his original Pod Dome ??? and would be interested in selling it...

Chris,
I think the original poster is referring to the dome option only and the lack of wheels or a support structure for a DIY building.

Rod, I think you skipped the opening line of my original post-Wayne's comment was made in a forum post.....one year ago, normally forum posts can't be edited after a short period of time, so price info (for any product)mentioned in a forum posting needs to be checked with the product vendor.

You appear to be saying that a manufacturer gets one shot at setting a price for a product and then that's it.

After many years in manufacturing B2B products, I can tell you that's not the case.

I was referring to the availability of a Pod Dome only option, so Taylor's concept is viable (I've seen one somewhere Taylor- I just can't find it)

Hello Steve,
I guess it depends on teh forum. I know that Observatory Central, as well as many other forums can be edited. Yahoo groups are the exception to editing rules. My only point being is that the editable post reflects one price and the current price is different. Agreed contacting the manufacturer would be the best move. However considering the potential buyer is 12 months plus out from making an educated decision the price is sure to change when it comes purchase time.

Also, I am not saying a manufacturer gets a one time shot at pricing. I am saying that editable posts need to be kept up on. If a vendor or manufacturer is going to market themselves in numerous forums across the net then it is the responsiblity of that vendor/manufacturer to stay current with the market pricing in those posts in other forums. If they do not then so be it.

Business 101, honor what you say. In this case it is in writing. Regardless of when it was written there is no time stamp or indication on the OC post that the price was going up or that was an introductory price point.

Hope that clarifies my point,
Clear skies,

Hmmmmm, we can't revisit time here(just tried to edit a year old post of mine)

I guess we agree to disagree on this one Rod.

And for Taylor's sake, we need to get this thread back on track.

The fine print - "Prices are subject to change at any time"
Common practice.

Back on topic - 1 person has almost finished a POD dome on a wood building. Finished pictures are being waited upon.
