Interesting as my ED hit 99 inside yesterday while the ambient was 98 (BUT that was with a box fan sucking air out of the thing) I think if my dome was black lined it would have stayed under the ambient temp with the fan...
As long as I can keep it under 105 (at least according to Dr. Clay) I should not run into problems)..
This it its 7th full summer and I have not had any problems so far keeping it below Dr. Clays suggested 105 Max...

9am and 84 inside. 84 outside according to wunderground.com.
So far so good.here's a view from my second floor window. Yes the house blocks the western sky (bad) but also the late afternoon sun.

Someone on the pod yahoogroups said they made pvc frames to stand and block the bays and covered this with reflective liner.
That would be me. I used solar screen. Here is a reply to yahoo but it has not posted yet.
Hi. Here are a few more pics of the skeleton frame. A few of the pics are with the bay not attached to the pod. Also is a pic of actual temps inside the pod with bay shading and a pic of temps without bay shading.
Notice how it is cool outside but roasting inside? (69F) Outside temps don’t seem to have much of an effect where I live. It’s sunlight penetration.. UV light? IR? You know they do have those BarBQ’s with IR burners.. :P
I tried the solar screen and also reflective material that was just laid on top of the bays. But it got hotter due to thermal contact. The key is to have space under your cover/screen so fresh air can remove the hot air.
You can also use Krylon Fusion Paint for Plastic on the interior. This is listed on skysheds site under new options.
I used 1” PVC Sch.40. You can use other sizes so adjust the T’s and L’s accordingly. Just FYI, I think ½” would be too flimsy.
Qty. 10 T’s
Qty. 9 L’s
Location on pic, PVC Length, Qty. Needed, Description/Location
1 - 41 ¼” x 6 – Vertical Support Beams
2 - 20 ¼” x 2 – Side’s Top
3 - 21 ½” x 2 – Side’s Bottom
4 - 27 ¼” x 2 – Back Top and Bottom
5 - 34 ½” x 1 – Top Front
6 - 7/8” x 10 – T’s and L’s interconnect couplers
Picture of Parts on Frame
Current Temps with bay covers on
Current Temps with bay covers off
The solar screen was not cheap. You might try internet locations to pick it up cheaper or use some other material. I used a one side of a reflective car window shade as my top support for the screen. The shade just lays across the top of the PVC.

Any way to ventilate the thing? Open the shutter a crack? I think just moving the air out through vents would be the efficient thing.

Chris,
Do you mean the POD in general (as opposed to Joe's mods)?
If so, there's no shutter. The dome opens from the bottom and slides up inside the other half. Opening it a crack only lets in more air at the 4' level. The dome peak still holds in the hot air. Because the two halves nest within each other there isn't a simple way to add a vent to the dome without causing interference with the other dome half as it opens
Some of the different options to deal with the heat are:
- open the dome entirely (most effective) - forcing cooler air into upper part of the dome (fans etc.) - blowing much cooler air around the inside of the POD (air conditioner) - keeping the heat out in the first place (adding various types of insulation)

102 Max for me today, outside temps were forecast to be higher but were probably about the same as yesterday. The extra reflectix over the north/east bays and the dome open a slit helped knock things down 5 degrees. Tomorrow morning I will close the shutter since afternoon storms are possible. Forecast high is a mere 90 not upper 90s
Thanks so much for the bay shade plans and pictures. I still might install the air conditioner since my body hates heat and humidity. But with the solar shading keeping temps within 10F of ambient maybe I don't need it on as much as I thought I would and certainly not when I'm not inside. But for me to have any hope of getting my Obs setup this summer finally, I will need some active cooling (personal preference)

Argh, Thanks Mark I didn't realize it was a Pod when I posted that. The best thing in the world would be some type of vent at the top that was closable for rain, etc.
I guess you could screen the 'door' and put a fan in it to pull the heat out?

The interconnect pieces should be 1 and 7/8" or 1 1/2 inches. 7/8 is way too short.
Each T and L is 1" deep so <1" wont do. Figures I would find this out at 5am after cutting all ten 7/8" with a hacksaw in my UN climate controlled garage

I built two early this morning since it will be triple digits here the next two days.I taped the reflectix to the frames so most of the UV should be kept out. Thanks again for posting pics and plans.

The problem is the reflectix isn't going to last all that well in the elements. If only POD would take this issue seriously.

They do... You just have to pay for the internal insulation option when you order you pod... They also sell the insulated dome cover as a option..
$$$ is what its all about..
you put your $100 in you put your $100 out you put your $100 in and you shake it all about. You do the hookie pokie and you turn yourself around. That's when you realize $100 is no where near enough... :P
