Norm, if you have any problems with the observatory, just contact CN member 'photonovore' (Mardi Clark). She designed and built her own "Roll-Around Roof" Observatory quite a while ago and would probably be more than happy to help. I've known her for a number of years - she's absolutely brilliant, and is definitely what we call 'good people'. Not sure how often she checks in here though, so you might have better luck with email. The address is at the bottom of the web page (just above the 'Construction details' link).

Once I clicked on the link...Very interesting.... I contacted her before I started construction as I liked her idea. I couldn't build it as light weight as hers because of the snow
loads we get some years but it still is the same general idea.

I guess it's been a while since I posted any pictures. I finally got around to painting the inside, got my rope lights installed and roof controller working with or without a PC. I can see I need to tidy up my wires for sure

Norm,
Do you have other photos of your impressive-looking observatory?

Your observatory build is looking very good. Great design implementation.

That's looking really nice. I like the black paint on the walls!

The paint is a real dark blue on the walls, perhaps the picture came out darker on your monitor Carol.

It's pretty dark in there at night , I can't even see the focuser to change eyepieces without some light either from the rope lights (which I put on a dimmer) or a red flashlight works too but ties up one hand of course.

Thanks for that great set of construction photos. I especially am impressed with your drive system for the roof. Has there been any warping?

yeah I'm afraid the "drive ring" has warped a little which makes it harder to drive the roof . I spring loaded my drive wheel this weekend but I really need a heavier compression spring. Ideally I'd have another drive wheel in the opposite corner but my wife seems to think I've spent enough money on it.I built it so I can drop the roof back down (jack on each side) if I'm going to be away or a bad storm is predicted etc.

Norm,
Could you post a detail photo of the spring-loaded drive wheel? I have a similar problem with a warped iron base ring and the eight support wheels it rolls on. (Check out the upper-left of this photo for an idea of how the wheels are mounted.) Not all the wheels make contact at the same time and I'm afraid one day soon I won't be able to "manhandle" the big dome around. Also I would love to motorize the dome rotation, but I would need better contact with the wheels and spring-loading them sounds like a good solution. Thanks again.
Michael

Lots of photos out here
https://picasaweb.google.com/ntfredrick/ObservatoryConstruction

But here is one here

I'll see if I can get a better closeup of the spring mechanism ...downloaded that from my Picasa site and it reduced the size...I still need a heavier spring as I still get some slippage

Here are a couple of photos of the spring loaded drive , not too complicated...I drilled a hole a little bigger than the spring in the drive board so it couldn't pop out

It's been awhile since I posted any progress on this but here are a few pics of my eyepiece holder I built, 12 volt feed to pier and a happy camper (me)
