I started on this sometime in July . It's a work in progress and I have an issue with the roof trying to walk around. I need to fine tune the position of the wheels I guess. I designed it so I can drop the roof back down to hopefully keep the bugs out etc.

Thanks, it works ...just turns a little hard which I hope to improve by fine tuning the roller positions. I wish I had used golf balls now, I think that may have worked better

Got a chance to align the caster axles with the center of the building, made a HUGE difference. I can now push it pretty easily most of the time and sometimes when i give it a shove it keeps on going! I used a laser set up in the center of the ring and an old secondary mirror to bounce the beam back.. I just kept adjusting the roller carriers until the beam bounced back to itself .

Nice obsy - yes - golfballs will bunch-up and jam UNLESS grouped with each set enclosed in a 'sleeve' on underside of dome to keep them apart

Thanks , didn't know that about the golf balls. I think i'm getting there with the rollers. It still tries to "walk" but my side rollers are helping with that . I may replace my homemade side rollers with actual ball bearings

Very slick. That's either a dome that aint, or a gable roof that thinks it is. Either way, it's a great idea. Stealth.

Norm, if you have any problems with the observatory, just contact CN member 'photonovore' (Mardi Clark). She designed and built her own "Roll-Around Roof" Observatory quite a while ago and would probably be more than happy to help. I've known her for a number of years - she's absolutely brilliant, and is definitely what we call 'good people'. Not sure how often she checks in here though, so you might have better luck with email. The address is at the bottom of the web page (just above the 'Construction details' link).

Once I clicked on the link...Very interesting.... I contacted her before I started construction as I liked her idea. I couldn't build it as light weight as hers because of the snow
loads we get some years but it still is the same general idea.

The paint is a real dark blue on the walls, perhaps the picture came out darker on your monitor Carol.

It's pretty dark in there at night , I can't even see the focuser to change eyepieces without some light either from the rope lights (which I put on a dimmer) or a red flashlight works too but ties up one hand of course.

yeah I'm afraid the "drive ring" has warped a little which makes it harder to drive the roof . I spring loaded my drive wheel this weekend but I really need a heavier compression spring. Ideally I'd have another drive wheel in the opposite corner but my wife seems to think I've spent enough money on it.I built it so I can drop the roof back down (jack on each side) if I'm going to be away or a bad storm is predicted etc.

Norm,
Could you post a detail photo of the spring-loaded drive wheel? I have a similar problem with a warped iron base ring and the eight support wheels it rolls on. (Check out the upper-left of this photo for an idea of how the wheels are mounted.) Not all the wheels make contact at the same time and I'm afraid one day soon I won't be able to "manhandle" the big dome around. Also I would love to motorize the dome rotation, but I would need better contact with the wheels and spring-loading them sounds like a good solution. Thanks again.
Michael

But here is one here

I'll see if I can get a better closeup of the spring mechanism ...downloaded that from my Picasa site and it reduced the size...I still need a heavier spring as I still get some slippage
