So the snow has finally melted and the ground has thawed! I have begun my modest but long-desired warm room extension. Here is a shot of the dimensions and when laid out, I realized it will be the size of a bathroom (but will not function as such.)

Looks like a good start! Now, just photoshop a couple of pieces of concrete into that photo, and you're good to go!
(if only it were that easy......)

Well... based on the photo showing the obs off the ground... i doubt he will be pouring concrete...

And what a photo !! How about a wider view, from back a ways... It appears as if that is a beautiful location !!

Thanks for the comments! I am running two beams from a ledger attached to one of the sides of my octagonal observatory that will be supported on the outlier end by two concrete piers. The plan is to connect the warm room to the obs with an internal (insulated with window)door. (BTW, I suffer from Arizona envy.) The attached photo was for selling this scope, (I did. I have a C11 Edge HD that I love) but you get an idea of the observatory.

Small update: This is definitely going to take longer than I had hoped. These old muscles can no longer be tortured as I used to do. Anyway I forgot how hard it is to back fill a hole by hand. I am hoping that once I get out of the dirt, I will have an easier time.

Take a vacation. Skies always clear up at home when you're away. Looks good. That insulation is wonderful stuff. I used the 1" stuff on the inside of a Rubbermaid Shed and it made a remarkable impact on keeping it cool during the day and holding in the warmth at night. 2" will be even better!

I'm guessing a 100-amp/20 circuit service will do, but only for a modest observatory.......Mt Palomar or something.......

Looks like a few days of dry weather coming over the weekend..... hopefully you'll be able to see the bottom of your trench again.

Hi Michael,
For future reference on your next construction project, plywood is strongest when its outside grain is laid perpendicular to floor joists, rafters, etc.

More than likely you already thought of this, yet since you have insulation sandwiched between 2 layers of plywood,I hope you covered the top layer with some plastic before it rained again. Moisture will be trapped between the layers and promote mold and rot.

I have invested in more plastic tarps in this one season than in all the years prior. Dan, yeah but this gave me the most surface and fewest cuts for the bucks, and the width is only about 66".

Reason #1: It mirrors the saltbox style of the house.
Reason #2 (the real reason): I started with the shorter wall then remembered the great steel insulated exterior door (with window) I found at our town dump (er, recycling center) that needs a higher frame.

At least the days are sunny. I managed to finish 99% of the shingles (my original plan was for sheet aluminum, but there were too many specialized parts for such a small area). Next, the exterior window and then some siding. I hope others are actually doing some observing somewhere.

Russ,
All I can say is not tall enough! I was forced to limit its height so that the the lower part of the shutter rail clears the the warm room roof. That preserves the 360* rotation of the dome. Definitely bad for the back.

That is a great looking observatory! The low door is a very small price to pay for such a nice observatory!

The door to my observatory is also low, and I told Scott (BYO), that this is the only door I've ever had to duck under, being short!

Basically it is .025" sheet aluminum pop-riveted onto 1/8" aluminum bars. The base ring and frame for the shutter are rolled angle iron. It is not as elegant as the commercial versions, but it has withstood time and weather for 25 years. I will post some detail pics asap.

Michael,I just had a thought about the area between the dome and your warm room. I your part of the state where the OBS is ,do you get a lot of snow? I hope that the snow build up is not so that it makes it's way into the observatory or pile up and make it difficult to remove.
I was just checking out your thread again and was wondering about it.

Tim,
Funny you should ask! I am installing de-icing cables on that connecting roof. Otherwise I probably would wind up with a solid block of ice locking the dome until the spring. Thanks for your concern! Here are a few pics of the latest progress (very boring insulation.) BTW, I ran one of those oil-filled electric radiator heaters today to test the heat retention and man oh man----as Kramer told Jerry Seinfeld as they sat in a sauna, it was like a sauna in there in less than 30 minutes. Next step is to install all the outlets and lighting fixtures (oh yes, and those deicing cables.)

Hey Mike, why did you decide to go with XPS foam for the roof insulation? And is that only 2" thick? or 4" total?

Ken,
It is 2" thick and seems to be more than adequate. I chose the boards because they easily fit in between the rafters I placed 24" o.c. Believe me, the room gets really warm very fast.

Michael, I think what he is thinking,is that with the 2" insulation, you may heat the room quickly to begin with, yet it may cool down faster also as the ceiling would require a thicker insulation to hold the heat in. It would seem to escape easier with the foam board insulation.
Just an observation mind you. Great looking job so far though.

Yea, I like the Rigid Foam board that the R value on it is only about R5 per inch. So you have about R10 in the ceiling. With your batts in the wall, you have R19. Usually you go a little more insulated on the ceilings then the walls (since heat rises). More importantly though, is air infiltration, that will suck the heat out of a building quick, and the rigid foam is excellent at not letting air in any cracks or splits on the wood. Looks toasty inside!

I apologize for trying to further explain what another may have been asking. I tend to do that at times and need not to do that.Sorry KenK. I was ,interested in why you chose that style of insulation my self as I have never used it before. The density of it would be an attractant to use it yet would be afraid that the seams would not allow perfect sealing properties.

the long edges of that sheet foam have tongues-and-grooves on them, so the long seams seal pretty well. Usually, they are cut to press-fit into a space, and sealing any larger cracks with spray-foam and small ones with caulk will make for an actual waterproof installation. No air escapes at all! Foam also makes an excellent vapor barrier, both for heating and air conditioning.

I let the situation kind of dictate the design. I had access to a lot of nice 1/2" rough-sawn boards and I figured they would look better than my less-than-perfect taped joints.

And lastly, a simple hook-and-eye to secure the inner door from the telescope room side. I installed a nice brass barrel bolt on the warm room side, but in my "fogitude" failed to take a picture of it. (Alas,it will be 2 weeks before I'm back in the Berkshires to complete the work.) So it looks like I have run out of excuses for not staying up late and trying again my hand at imaging. I built a work surface and started to "furnish" the warm room. The cables and their extensions work very nicely as I did a milk run during our snow showers today and, that even after being idle for nearly six months the CGEM responded beautifully. I am anxious to see if the go-to's work.

Small update:
I managed to spend several hours in the observatory last night imaging Jupiter (that's another story!) Temps hovered close to 0*F, but the warm room stayed a toasty 65*F. I am still trying to develop a smooth workflow, but I need more time actually using the obs. I still need to turn the dome manually (motorizing-a future project?) and also am struggling to get the focus without too much hassle (I do have the simple Moonlite focus software, but I'm still needing to focus the primary on my C11 Edge.) So I have to go into the "cold room" occasionally. It's an amazing contrast of temperatures!! Anyway, this warm room was the best "equipment" I could have given myself.

Michael,

It's worth the investment to motorize. I thought the same thing when I motorized my roof... And after spending the money I wish I'd just done it when I started this project. It really makes things better. For focusing, I'd use something like SGP. Get your FWHM on a star down to something < 2.0 and then move to Jupiter and work it real time to improve the focus.

Glad the warm room is working out!!!

I wasn't sure if this warrants a completely new thread, but I'll continue this one. I've decided to motorize the rotation of the dome and need all the advice I can get from the kind experts on CN. The basic facts are:
* dome is 14' diameter
* weighs several hundred pounds
* is slightly out of round, but will rotate 360* manually
I am considering some type of friction drive with a drive wheel kept in contact with one leg of the base ring's angle iron (about 1 1/2" wide). I understand the need for a high torque reduction gear box and maybe something like a 1/2 hp motor that can be run in two directions with a switch attached by a cable that can be some modest distance (around 6') from the motor. I'm just unsure of how to actually put all the pieces together. Here are some photos that might illuminate the job. Thanks one and all!

Many ways to do this I'm sure, I use a friction drive to rotate my roof which weighs about 1000 lbs. It does slip in a spot as the "turntable" is warped a bit. Probably could help if I got an inflatable softer rubber tire. I use a small gearmotor I purchased off eBay with some home made gear reduction via chains and sprockets.
I need to update some photos out here but you'll get the idea

If the tires slip because of an out of round track you probably could fix that with a large compression spring in conjunction with a moveable wheel axle. Mike

Thanks, boy that was awhile ago ...the motor is supposed to be 50 RPM but it is a little faster than that. Not sure on HP but it isn't very big

Ring = 116 inches diameter where the tire would contact the ring so pi x D = 364.5 inches circumference
Tire = 8 inch diameter pi x D = 25 inches so it goes 25 linear inches per revolution

364.5 / 25 = 14 revs of tire to make 1 RPM of ring

Speed is OK , could be a little slower , I may go up to a 48 tooth sprocket, I think it is 36 now.
I control it with http://www.pololu.com/product/1381
, I went with the 15 amp unit originally but overheated it when I slowed it down. These units let you control it with USB, a pot or RC , reversible and can have limit switches , very nice little unit for $55. I use a POT most of the time but the control program is nice , shows temp of board

Mikey , I do have it on a movable wheel axle with a compression spring but it still slips at times..I think I need more travel for my wheel. I have since rebuilt this with a steel frame as I split the 2x10 right in half lengthwise (did I mention that the roof is heavy

Norm, Why did you choose a DC rather than an AC motor? What am I very ignorant about here? I am concerned with getting the highest torque possible and need to know how to put together reduction gears that will work for me. Again, I understand the abstract, but have no hand-on experience with motors and such. But you have been very very helpful. Thanks.

DC is very easy to control with that board I found and others are available ...for reversing , ramp up speed etc. Sure you can do it with AC but I think the controls for that are a lot more $ . I was going to use DC motors I found for scary prop stuff but found this one on eBay and got it for $25

The Pololu units are nice. I use one on my dome, but it's quite a bit smaller. The Pololu has a programmable speed acceleration and deceleration so it doesn't jerk your dome when it starts/stops.

I also use a similar wheel configuration to rotate the dome. It works well but it does slip occasionally. I would recommend getting your position from a separate tick wheel or you could even use a digital compass to relay the position (my dome has both).

Good luck!
Jared
