November 16, 2013 . . .

Thanks, folks.

Flooring was completed yesterday . . . and an alarming discovery made. The pier has settled! My trigonometry calculates it as being 0.8 degrees out of plumb, leaning toward the west.

Still within the ability to achieve level with the L bolt nuts but I was aghast when the shed contractor pointed it out.

Terry, Did you not use treated lumber for the floor trusses ?Just curious since you had to tarp it.I had used treated for the floor trusses yet not the 3/4" plywood floor, although I did paint the floor with deck paint to protect it from the elements.
Since the pier has moved already, I hope that it stops moving/settling. It must be an optical allusion as it appears ,in the image, that you can see the tilt of it.

0.8° should be no big deal. As long as it has indeed settled and is not continuing to move!

Wood eating insects are not a big problem here. Contractor and I agreed that PT was really only necessary for lumber in direct ground contact. The floor members are well off the ground with unimpeded air flow under them. The headers and joists are 10"X10", overkill for sure but selected as the best solution to get the level of the finished floor to where it had to be to allow the roof gable end to comfortably clear the mount and OTAs when in the parked position. I'm not sure I would have bothered to tarp it but he did so anyway. A little rain on it for the week or two before it gets roofed would have done no harm IMO. It will have years to dry out!

As Dan points out, 0.8 degrees of lean is no problem . . . just a surprise as it sure was plumb the day after it was put in place. Hopefully it will not go much further.

The lean in the image is illusion as the image is of the N-S plane and the pier is plumb in that direction. The lean in the E-W plane is not detectable to my eye but a level shows it readily enough!

I am antsy to get out there and try PEMPro's Polar Alignment routine . . but the weather is not cooperating. What else is new!

You will love your AP1600GTO. That is an absolutely awesome mount. I've only had mine a short time and it blows me away. I know they are expensive but my goodness they are worth it.

Well . . . brrrrr! . . .

This is precisely what I had hoped to avoid!!!

My observatory shed is pretty much built . . . but not on-site It is in the shed builder's shop awaiting delivery of the rollers for the roof. Hopefully, I will have a roof against the white stuff within a week.

In the interim, tonight is an "imaging night." I hope.

Some "observatory," eh??

Well, you still have a solid pier, and you're up off the cold, hard ground. Better than nothing! Hopefully, you'll be enclosed soon.

Terry it looks awfully cold and foreboding out there. Something could come out of those trees. Mike

That's what would be called an "open air observatory"

You'll appreciate the observatory that much more, when it arrives & gets setup, and you can just open the roof and start observing in a little more comfort.

I've never seen snow before in my life, as cold as it is out there, you have to admit the view is pretty.

P.S. I heard extreme cold weather makes your body burn up calories fast. So maybe you can start the Winter Astrophotography weight loss plan. You can have all the burgers you want and still loose weight.

WHAT??? Mind-boggling!

But, it's good to have something to look forward to!

I am ready to go. As is Teamviewer so I don't have to be out there too long.

It does snow in Oman, but only rarely, maybe once a year and on a specific mountain top where people generally never go in winter unless they live there and have no choice or work at the radar station. I've never been there when it had snowed as it always happens on a weekday when I can't manage the drive there.

Terry,if everything is ready except for the rollers for the roof?,Hang in there, it won't be long then.
The windy nights and clouds hanging around are keeping me from doing anything.
Yet now that mine is pretty much complete, ready to use, next clear and windless night will be great.

Tim:
Not quite. Roof trusses are not done as he wants the rollers in-hand before finalizing them. He hopes to get things here and erected on Thursday. So . . . soon.

Mike: You've got me scared now about what could come lurching out of those trees at me in the night!
