Somehow the laptop I'm using does not allow me to view the URLs needed to link to my sketch and narrative in the Lunar Observer's Forum, "Alexander's Waning Ray". Please jump over there and have a look.
Dee: The pastels were silky when applied to the smooth Artagain paper. Thank you so much!
Here's the link to Rich's report in the lunar forum. {Hi Rich! - Erika}

Rich,
Spectacular sketching! It must have been thrilling to be back sketching again. Your capture of this region of the moon is fascinating. The bright whites of reflected sunlight, the lava grays and dark shadows create stunning interest and depth to an enchanting region. Your ability to colorfully describe the lunar events that lead to this moonscape is unmatched in style and interest. Great work Rich and welcome back.

Rich that is an incredible sketch! You chose your subject area very well as it has so very much on offer - varied terrain from rugged to smooth, lofty mountainous peaks to deep craters, the spectacular drama of the crater ray, and the yawning abyss of lunar night. Simply breathtaking, and it's wonderful that you are finally back out sketching your moon again

Thank you Mark, Mike, Frank, Rony, and Sally!
It feels so great to back here among my dear friends! I must admit I was elated to be sketching again after such a long and trying period. It definitely did my soul some good to be out in the Moonlight again. I can't wait until the weather improves for another go at it.

Thank you so much Erika! It feels great to be back in the saddle again. Those pastels Dee sent me were amazing for their smooth texture and ease of application. I also liked being able to lay in grey tones in unblended fashion. This can allow some interesting tonal transitions. You may have noted that I used a sheet of 19" x 25" Artagain black paper. I had some ordered through an art supply store just before the fire. Good luck there, as it didn't get charred or soggy! I like the smooth surface, holds tight detail very well, although it "repells" the pastel powder and a little thump can alter areas of the sketch if you are not careful.
Thanks to you and all for such a warm welcome back!

Beautiful sketch , you got great height going on there, truly breathtaking. I love the shadows, they tell such a story of the surface all by themselves.
Glad you are back sketching again.

Rich, it is just plain outstanding. I can see you doing a public showing with sketches like this one...all with arrows to a place on a big moon map...with people looking at the sketches, then the moon, then the sketches, and then asking about how to get started sketching themselves. Roland

Rich, I thought of your sketch early this morning just before dawn when my dog (who sleeps at our feet on the bed) woke me up to take him out. When I was outside with dawn approaching, the waning crescent and nearby Venus were breathtaking. I am sure glad you took the opportunity to get that view; I was too tired to grab the scope and try something this morning. Roland

Rich,
I am sorry that I have not responded sooner. Your observation of the Mare Imbrium region including Alexander's ray is outstanding! This has to be one of your best renderings of the lunar surface to date. You have expertly captured the rugged appearance of this chaotic region of the Moon. Thank you for sharing it with us all.
I hope that you and your family are doing well.
Carlos

Thanks guys!
Roland, I've often had the very same feeling during the last couple of months of my sketching inactivity, being able to view your great results have lifted my spirits.
Carlos, this was one of those sketches when the weather, scope, lunar region and my desire to draw was at a peak. Absence makes the heart grow fonder!
We are fine, thanks for your well wishes.
