Two months long epoch of cloudy, foggy and snowy weather is finished. Weather is now improving so there are more opportunities to observe. Finally, we managed to go to our favorite observing site - Petrova gora (Peters' mountain) - 492 m (1,613 ft) tall mountain about 65 km south from the Zagreb. Skies are wonderful there, LM is around 6.2 - 6.4, depending on humidity. We also managed to see shadow that was casted by the Sirius. Amazing experience. It was quite chilly with temperatures around -5°C so we didn't stayed to long. Around midnight our observing session was over.
This is sketch of the M51 and NGC 5195. Although it was just 30° over horizon it was fantastic sight in my new 12" dob. Click on sketch for larger version.

The Rosetta was wonderful through 2" WA 68° eyepiece and OIII filter. This sketch doesn't do the justice to it.

Last link leads to the sketch of M65 & M66. Unfortunately, my fingers where really frostbited while I was doing sketch so NGC 3628 was left out. At this point I just wanted to go home to warm bed.

I hope that you will like sketches. My apologies for bad English.
Clear skies!

Vedran,
Of all the wonderful sketches you have posted here, these are the very best. The visual details especially in the Rosette and spiral arms of M-51 are fantastic. Terrific post!

An excellent series of deep sky observations. You have rendered M51, Rossette Nebula, and M65/66 very nicely in your new instrument (congratulations!). I look forward to your future observations.

Here are new set of sketches. First is M41 - not good as Rodelaet since I don't have telescope with wide field of view next si NGC 2903 with 12" Dob, third is "The UFO" galaxy, NGC 2683, and last from the galaxies is M106. M106 was placed in light polluted part of sky so it is rather poor sketch. M109 was barely visible in 12" scope

I have made another sketch around two weeks ago. It is a sketch of Ariadeus Rille. Its at the bottom of the page.

Wow! very nice. I know what you mean by cold weather and frost bite. I was out last night working on my H400. It was -20 degrees here. I only lasted about 2 hours. By my third sketch my hands were too stiff. I could no longer draw. What do you do to keep your fingers nimble?

Thanks Ares.
It is easier to see in 12" with what is barely visible in 8". The M51 shows clear spiral structure, M104 looks like on short exposure photos. M33 shows some knots in spiral structure. NGC 891 shows broad central disk of dust. Others galaxies like NGC 7331 were little disappointing. It was just brighter and little larger. M31 was on the edge between disappointment and improvement - NGC 206 was visible and dust lanes where easier to see. Where big improvement is visible are globular cluster - they just look gorgeous. Last night from my backyard with LP i managed to count 55 stars in M13, 35 in M3. In 8" there were about 30 stars visible in M13.
I'm satisfied with my purchase of 12" scope. It shows improvement but not so big as would others expect, at least not under LP.

I'm also using gloves, but I do a little trick of using different ones. On my left hand I'm using a thick snowboard-glove. This is the hand I'm tossing my Dobsonian with. On my right hand I'm using a Winter cycling glove. It's thin enough to make me able to sketch, change eyepieces, play with the focus, yet it is warm enough too (adding the fact that I'm continuously moving my fingers of my right hand while observing and not touching the cold telescope tube with it).

This is sketch of the NGC 4490 with SN 2008AX. Supernova was visible with averted vision as little star. I've estimated her brightness to be about mag 13.4. 12" scope was used for this sketch.

This is M94 in 12" scope and after checking photos I believe that bright arc in lover left part of the galaxy is spiral arm.

This is typical FOV in Virgo with more galaxies than stars. This is sketch of M60 with NGC 4647 (upper right corner), M58 (lover left corner) and NGC 4638 (upper left corner). Nice grouping of galaxies.

I just couldn't restrain myself from sketching M3. It was just gorgeous at 143x and at 250x core was resolved into stars. Magnificent globular cluster.
Forecast for tonight is also good so expect more sketches tonight.

Thanks for another set of superb sketches. M 101 is spectacular Experiece + good conditions + 12" of mirror can work wonders.
Even on a good night I couldn't spot spiral arms in M101 (NELM 5.8) through 8" scope, or they were on the edge of perception and I was not sure. Well... observing is an art you have to learn and practice to achieve such results.
Clear skies!

Thanks Ares and Frank.
When I've seen M101 I was stunned. Two spiral arms were easily visible and third was on the edge of the detection. Observing session was held on Petrova gora, about 40 miles south from Zagreb and 15 miles from nearest populated places. Even at such distances from towns, north was brighter because of light pollution. We had NELM 6.0 skies that night.
I was expecting much more from the comet. It quite strange looking comet. No central condensation, no tail, just somewhat brighter bar in center of coma.
Cheers

Vedran.
Your incredible journey through the heavens continues with your latest set of impressive observations. You have recorded these objects accurately and with skill. The Swan Nebula (M17) appears to be swimming in a celestial ocean. The clusters appear to be exploding. The Veil Nebula (NGC 6960) appears as a wift floating in space. NGC 7331 looks interesting and gives the impression of a "lensing galaxy." Thank you for sharing these wonderful observations with us all.
