I made an observation of Jupiter on August 20, 2009 (02:15 U.T.) using my 9-inch F/13.5 Maksutov-Cassegrain. I noted much detail over the jovian disk as indicated. I was also able to make out albedo markings over Ganymede when the seeing steadied.
Date (U.T.): August 20, 2009 Time (U.T.) 02:15 L1 077.6, L2 207.2, L3 304.7 Instrument: 9-inch (23-cm) F/13.5 Maksutov-Cassegrain Magnification: 287x Filters: None (IL) Seeing (1-10): 7, Antoniadi (I-V): II Transparency (1-6): 4
Notes: South Polar Region (SPR): The Wesley Impact Scar (WCIS) was not clearly visible over the northern border of the SPR. This agrees with the images of the WCIS obtained recently which indicate the dissipation of the impact debris. The region appeared dark to dusky (3-4/10) and mottled. South Temperate Zone (STZ): Appears shaded to bright (6-7/10), but no other detail is visible within. South Temperate Belt (STB): Appears dark to dusky (3-4/10) with a dark (3/10) elongation projecting into the South Tropical Zone (STrZ) towards the preceding limb. South Tropical Zone (STrZ): Appears bright (7/10) with the dark (3/10) elongation over it's preceding half extending from the STB. South Equatorial Belt (SEB): Appears dark to dull (3-5/10) with it's southern component dark to dusky (3-4/10) and northern component dusky to dull (4-5/10). Equatorial Zone (EZ): Appears bright (7/10) with an irregular, dull (5/10) band over the equator. Very bright (8/10) and large ovals are noted over it's northern half. Blue festoons (3/10) are noted to project into it from the southern border of the NEB. North Equatorial Belt (NEB): Appears dark to dusky (3-4/10) with dark (3/10) extended barges (or coalesced groups of barges) noted along the northern border and blue festoons along the southern border. Bright to very bright (7-8/10) rifts are noted within it. North Tropical Zone (NTrZ): Appears bright (7/10) without any other detail visible within it. North Temperate Belt (NTB): Appears bisected and dusky (4/10) with an elongated, dark (3/10) condensation extending between the two components (center transit timed at L2 216.2/L3 313.8). Another dark (3/10) condensation was visible over the northern component preceding the larger condensation. North Temperate Zone (NTZ): Appears bright (7/10) without any other detail visible within it. North Polar Region (NPR): Appears dark to dusky (3-4/10) and mottled.

A detailed section of Jupiter's preceding limb showing Ganymede (4.44m) and Europa (5.12m) with their respective shadows following them. I noted albedo features over Ganymede during moments of steadier seeing.

Carlos,
Beautiful sketches with a plethora of amazing details including what you recorded on the surface of Ganymede. The colors are such a plus here. Fantastic work that is exceptionally good.

Frank,
Thank you for the compliment on my Jupiter observation. I was impressed with the amount of detail visible over Jupiter. The difficult thing was to record all of the detail visible! I was amazed to see the detail over Ganymede as well. The best of luck in your own observations.

Tommy,
Thank you for the compliment on my Jupiter observation. Every time I make an observation using my digital tablet and Photoshop it is a learning experience for me. I hope to make many more in the future. The best of luck in your own observations.

Awesome! Great job seeing markings on Ganymede. One day I hope to get seeing good enough to achieve that.

Excellent.
Interesting details, not only Ganymede but bisected NTB and drooping STB.
Thanks Carlos,

Thank you all for your wonderful compliments on my Jupiter observation and sectional sketch of the satellites (Ganymede and Europa). I was impressed with the amount of detail that I noted over Jupiter and especially Ganymede.
Sol- I did note the dark projection form the northern border of the STB and the bisected NTB which I have noted in the past. A friend and noted planetary imager, Sean Walker of Sky and Telescope, was imaging at the same time and recorded what I observed (see image below).
The best of luck in all of your observations. May you have clear and steady skies.

Carlos, excellent work. That is amazing that you can see detail on the moons. You must have had some unbelievably steady skies.

Amazing sketch, Carlos. In addition to capturing a spectacular event, that is one of the best sketches of Ganymede I've ever seen. Well done!

Carlos,
It's very interesting to compare your sketches to Sean Walker's excellent images to see the number of details you observed and accurately rendered over the Jovian disk.

Thank you all for your kind compliments on my Jupiter and Ganymede/Europa. It was exciting to be able to see all the detail recorded. I have to admit that some fine detail detected was even beyond my ability to record it accurately. The best of luck in your own observations of Jupiter.

Carlos,
WOW!!!! Tremendous and I love all of the detail including the showing of the difference in sizes in the two moons. One of the best if not the best sketch this month. Always love observing your work as it is very inspiring.
