Dumbbell Nebula and M15       #3444369 - 11/12/09 05:41 PM Attachment (81 downloads) Edit   Reply   Quote Quick Reply   I was able to view the Dumbbell Nebula (M27 and NGC 6853) and M15 (NGC 7078) while on vacation on Northern California under very dark and steady skies. Stars fainter than sixth magnitude were easily visible under the black jet skies with the Milky Way prominent. I was using my faithful Celestron C8 Schmidt-Cassegrain reflector for my observations (105x and 210x). The Milky way was visible as a bright, nebulous stream with pockets of dark spots within this celestial river. The image below is an example of what I enjoyed; http://www.sciencebuddies.org/blog/graphics/Astro_MilkyWay_DSC4148a-500px.jpg The Dumbbell Nebula (M27 or NGC 6853) in Vulpecula was discovered in 1764 by the French astronomer Charles Messier. This planetary nebula lies at a distance of approximately 1,200 light years and is estimated to be approximately 3,500 years of age. The luminous )main) body of the planetary is approximately 6 arc-minutes in diameter and the halo surrounding it is approximately 15 arc-minutes. While observing the Dumbbell Nebula I noted bright knots within the main body of the nebula, especially over the eastern half of the nebula (as visible in the inset sketch at 210x). This was one of my best views of the Dumbbell Nebula to date. A digital image produced in Pixelmator. This globular cluster, located in Pegasus, lies at approximately 33,600 light years from the Sun and is estimated to be 13.2 billion (thousand million) years of age (one of the oldest known globular star clusters). M15 appeared as a stellar explosion in the eyepiece field with a bright central core and a multitude of faint stars at the periphery. A digital image produced in Pixelmator. That Dumbell rendering looks 3~D and photographically real! You must have really enjoyed this sketching session. You have become the digital sketch master extraordinaire! Yes I wish I too had been sketching more seriously when I attended the Oregon Star Parties a decade ago. Several hundred of us observed the Milky Way in the darkest skies on the continent in Central Oregon as similar to your photo link. Hardly no one was sketching then at our location in the early 1990's; only observing. A few did astrophotography. I was fortunate to have viewed both objects under excellent sky conditions. The Dumbbell Nebula was especially exciting to observe. So much detail was visible over this planetary nebula. I resubmitted my M15 observation as the one I originally uploaded was a faulty version. Personally I am very impressed with the M15. I know these globulars are hard to present as they appear in the eyepiece - as confused central blurs with speckle starlight points in the foreground and you have captured this beautifully. Beautiful observations. But I see a lot of weak dots at the background of your M15-sketch. When it are faint stars, they are drawn to big. When it are bright stars, they are drawn to weak.
