Very nice sketch of those two gems. I wish I didn't have heavy LP blocking my view from my home.

Roland, Phily, Tom, Rutilus, Ed,
Last year at the beginning of June I observed globular clusters and planetary nebula all night along the southern meridian from a good dark site with Dale Holt down in Arizona. I wanted to get back to this pair on a good night from Illinois and that finally happened after several attempts. It is worth the effort to see them both together. Thanks for your nice words.

Jean, John and Chris,
When your weather improves you will be able see these. Under good conditions away from an urban area a 6" scope or even smaller should do it.

Nice sketch, Frank! I like the couple and have got them three years ago using my 10" 1:5.6 Dobson. That is my not finished drawing of them (in standard orientation):

Ernest, Mel, and Tom,
Thank you all for your kind words. -- Ernest- That is a very fine capture of the pair, must be pretty close to the horizon from St. Petersburg's northern latitude.

Frank, my sketch was done in my summer voyage to Crimea (Black Sea). It is 42N and the pair was quite observable (with altitude 15° over horizon). In Saint Petersburg we do not have real astronomical nights whole summer and have to find opportunity observe summer deepsky only traveling.

A few nights past making the above sketch I managed to get the Box nebula, the planetary in Ophiuchus.
Planetary Nebula "The Box" NGC 6309
This is a fine little, somewhat dim (v. mag. 11.5), box shaped planetary nebula in the constellation of Ophiuchus. Nebula filters brighten this one up pretty well. It would be best to observe it from less light compromised skies to see the many faint stars in the region. With the 9th magnitude star just beyond the north end, this one is also called the Exclamation Mark nebula. This planetary is easy to locate about 3° north of Eta (η) Oph.
Sketching:
9"x11" Black Canson sketching paper; white pastel pencils and a blending stump; Scanned Scope: 10" f/5.7 Dobsonian: 9 mm eyepiece 161x Date and Time: 6-26-2012, 04:15-04:35 UT Seeing: Pickering 7/10 Transparency: average 2.5/5 Location: Constellation: Ophiuchus RA 17h 14m Dec -12° 55'

Tom,
Thank you for the compliment. Over the past two weeks with all the dry air and clear nights, I started getting opportunities to visit old friends in the night sky. Sadly it didn't continue past yesterday and today.
