I took a trip to a dark site last Saturday to put my new 16" Sumerian through its paces and had a great night. Seeing was excellent at around Antoniadi I but poor transparency hampered DSO hunting/sketching so I have to wait a little longer to properly see how much detail a larger aperture scope can pull.
M1 was very hard to sketch with the conditions so poor, just a few fleeting glimpses was all that I was given to make the sketch.
The brighter M42/43 was alot easier but I under clearer skies I should imagine more detail and contrast should be shown. They say good things come to those that wait well I've had enough of waiting....GIMMEE CLEAR SKIES!!!

A 16" in dark skies, WOOOW! Nice sketches. I especially like the one of M1, which shows the detail well.

M1 is far from disappointing, my friend. Beautiful rendition with more detail than I've ever seen.
The Orion Nebula is incredible. Mike, what materials did you use? Oil pastel? Chalk?

Mike,
You have 2 beautiful looking sketches there. A 16 inch scope is a great scope to have under dark skies for observing and sketching.

Beautiful work and among the best. It's a treasure when you see deep sky drawn accurately and representative of the difficult and elusive nature of the perception.

Hi Mike,
Would you talk a moment about how to did the outer nebulosity of M42? What tools did you use to lighten it/blend it in places? Did you put the stars down first or after?

Hi Michael I think the best I can do is point you towards this tutorial which really helped me when I first started using pastels ( big thankyou to Alex for writing it up).
My M42 was simply done by brushing on thin layers of white pastel and then using a putty eraser to take some pastel off which helps with the wispy nebula look. Stars are added last using either a pastel pencil of white ink pen.
I hope this helps a little? I've found that using pastels is an excellent technique for astro sketching.

Wow, the filaments in the Crab are really cool. I have never seen them visually and appreciate someone who can tease them out. Well done.

Mike, thank you very much for the link to Alexander Massey's article at IceInSpace. I was not familiar with Scott Mellish. His method was simple and effective. I love it. Looks like I need to make another trip to the art supply store.
