Craters Mercator, Campanus and Ramsden at Sunrise
      #5814200 - 04/21/13 09:55 PM Attachment (24 downloads)

After another canceled public telescope viewing Friday evening due to thick clouds and light snow, I was pleased to see a nice Saturday filled with sunshine followed by a clear night.
With no particular sketching targets in mind, I scanned the terminator for interesting sketching targets and stopped when I could see sunrise at Ramsden (26 km.) along with all those crisscrossing rimae (rilles).
Northeastward away from Ramsden and across Palus Epidemiarum, I also added two additional ancient craters Mercator (49 km.) and Campanus (49 km.).
This break in our poor Chicagoland spring weather was long overdue.

Sketching:

For this sketch I used: 400 series black Strathmore Artagain paper 9"x9", white and black Conte’
pastel pencils , and Conte’crayons, a blending stump, plastic eraser.
Telescope: 10 inch f/5.7 Dobsonian with 6mm (241x)
Date: 4-21-2013 01:00 – 02:45 UT
Temperature: 7.2°C (45°F)
Weather: clear, calm
Seeing: good Antoniadi II-III
Co longitude: 35.4°
Lunation: 10.6 days
Illumination: 74.1%

The rimae look great at your sketch I enjoyed them very much. This was the ideal light for that target.

It's always a good moment while looking at your sketches Frank. What is interesting as well is that you share your technic with us. This sketch is just fantastic. Thank you !

Very impressive work, Frank, as always. The various ground shades, the shadows an bright rims... You caught it all beautifully. I wish I had your talent.

Uwe, Michel, Jef, Ken and Peter,

The lighting was just perfect for the Ramsden region. Thanks for your kind remarks.

Frank,
I have a question on the shadows. Do you use the black Conte pencil to create or and eraser with a shield? After working on the Moon a few times this weekend. I know how difficult this is to capture. I am in awe of your talent.

Hi Ken,

I usually do the sketch entirely in white pastel and make an outline of shadows in white pastel to lock in their positions. I then return to shade in using black pastel (sometimes I use medium black charcoal)at the end. If you do try sketching this way the sketch will look very flat before you add in the black. I do not like eraser shields much. The less materials I have scopeside the happier I am.
I do keep shaped erasers in my kit. Using sandpaper I have wedge shaped ones, pointed ones, square ones, etc.

Frank

Thanks Frank,
I am always interesting in learning techniques. I tried the eraser shield with a gum type eraser. I was able to get some shadows but not want I saw. As the Moon gets fuller it has become harder to capture at least for me. I still need to keep it simple. I certainly have enjoyed viewing your work. Thank you again for your tips and words of wisdom.

Clear Skies

Ken

Andre, Tom, Chris and Erika,

Thank you all for your nice words.
I look forward to sketching more now that the winter and poor spring weather patterns seems to be abating.

Frank

Thank You Alex,

I appreciate what you have said.
I certainly look forward to seeing more sketches from you; they are always inspiring in the same way that the late Scott Mellish sketches will always be to me.

Frank
