That's a great work of fine details. I like very much the bottom bands with all the very fine details into them. Congratulation.

Andre.

Thanks Chris,

Seeing was excellent. I broke some pencil points during this one, so I couldn't really finish what was started on the rings.

Best,

Sol,

Nice work. Tonight the Northeast looks like it could have at least good seeing anyway. Nice to see you post again.

Sol,
Beautiful work. Had to read what a Chromacor was. New one on me.

You sure have captured a nice bit of detail.

Bravo

Thanks again to everyone. The image above on my computer screen is pretty close to the actual size of my sketch.

I thought I would take the liberty of resizing this same sketch to represent something closer to an eyepiece view. My reason is that when sketching in the field as I do, a sketcher has to decide how to render details seen as readable. I elect to decide what I do in terms of pencil technique done on computer copy paper very quickly. I just hope things look pretty close to what I think I see through the eyepiece.

Best,

Sol, it's apparent you had a wonderful night with Saturn. That's what counts. I am curious about the number of belts rendered, though. You gotta sketch what you see, no doubt. To do otherwise would be dishonest, IMO. It's a wonderful observation and a great sketch.

Sol -

Beautiful sketch work by you, as always. Sorry I am not participating here more lately as I miss allot of great posts by all of you.

I was curious if I may ask, the format size of your sketch. Also, I am impressed that you are using only a 6 inch reflector. I use an old Coulter Odyssey 10.1 inch never collimated f/4.5 bought in 1987, with best eyepiece optics as 9.7mm super-plossl and reasonably good quality 6mm Othoscopic, but that only renders me a 120x and 192x view.

I saw your mention of a 4mm eyepiece optics but not knowing your f/ratio, I assume it is a f/8 and that figures that your 4mm would produce about 305X power. With good seeing conditions your telescope view must be amazing for Saturn. This also indicates what a good 6 inch Newtonian can reveal.

I look forward to seeing more observations and sketches from you. Thanks much for posting.

Thanks Mark,

I use a couple of scopes. For this sketch I used a 6" refractor @ f/8. I also use a 6" newton, an old Criterion @ f/8.3. They both can easily support 50x/aperture inch. I also have an excellent 3" prototype achromat refractor design by the great Tom Back.

I had excellent seeing with Regulus showing holding steady for a second or two followed by a very slow undulation of the same time length alternating back and forth at 375x. Seeing conditions is everything.

My format has the globe at ~2" in diameter.

Best,
