The mighty Crescent

Again this is a drawing I've wanted to make for some time. But of course I was a bit apprehensive because of this incredibly complex part of the sky, right in the heart of the milky way with its thousands of little stars. So I started drawing with the OIII in order to make it a bit easier. But I wasn't really satisfied. So I removed the filter and kept adding and adding stars until I got dizzy. Another difficulty was that the Crescent stood exactly at the zenith. Which meant that with the moving sky I had to turn my Dob predominantly around its azimuth axis. When I finished the drawing I had made more than a quarter turn compared to when I stared and obviously I had to turn my drawing with it. Very confusing! But anyway, here's the result...

Peter.

Wow, superb sketch my friend especially because I saw this crescent recently taken by a friend.

Peter

You have done an excellent job. For sure you can't achieve what a CCD camera do but you have all the merit be sure of that.

Andre

Wow, now at least I know what to look for. But even with a NELM 6.5m sky I was unable to see the Crescent - perhaps the reason was that I was not using an OIII filter? And I guess I was using too high magnification.

Thanks for sharing the sketch and the technical details, that's why sketching is so useful for visual observers.

Thank you, Ferenc! Without OIII filter the Crescent is still visible in my 18" but no more than that. You're absolutely right that this forum's a great way to learn from each other, both in the sense of drawing technique and observing.

Peter
