Obs Alert: Jupiter with 3 shadow transits 10/12/13
      #6064105 - 09/05/13 10:28 AM

Hi,

On October 12th, 2013 at 4:32 UT there will be a rare triple shadow event across Jupiter lasting 65 minutes. As shown below in the SkyMap Pro map the moons casting the shadows on Jupiter are Io, Europa, and Callisto. Callisto will be casting its shadow on the South Polar Region of Jupiter.

Also below is a sketch made by George Phillips Bond of a three shadow transits on Jupiter on on January 28th, 1848 using the 15" Great Refractor. Using SkyMap Pro I was able to determine that the shadow transits that night were from Io, Europa, and Ganymede.

Thanks for pointing this out Eric.

Have attached WinJUPOS simulation.

Not to gloat but I am well placed for this . But clouds will probably intervene I guess.

Cheers,
David.

Hi David,

Thanks for posting the WinJUPOS simulation. I did a WinJUPOS simulation as well but the shadows of the moons did not all seem to be round. So I went with the one from SkyMap.

Have you notices this as well?

Best,

Eric

Hi Eric,

Yes the shadows on WinJUPOS do look ragged. Of course they look as though they also take account of perspective: how they project onto the Jovian cloud-tops and our viewpoint. This out-of-round effect can be seen in good seeing when they are near a limb and images often show the effect very well.

Looking forward, in hope, for the event - marks my sister's birthday also!

Cheers,
David.

Thanks for this alert Eric,

as I saw a triple satellite transit on Jupiter in good large optics in the early 2000's at Sean's Astronomy Shop in Battleground Washington. I'll never forget that experience and especially watching it change and unfold over an hour. Unfortunately, I see no one confirming yet here, that Jupiter is not up from the eastern horizon for west coast US observers until after midnight when this event will have ended. I hope someone will confirm I am wrong but I believe only East Coast US and Europe will enjoy this. *[4:30 UT] or 8pm ~ 2 Midnight US Time Zones.

Please respond soon as I would like to inform other friends that do not frequent the astronomy forums.

Thank you,

Mark Seibold, Astronomy Artist, Photographer

Hi everyone. I on the other hand have some other problem. Because I live in Eastern Europe I will only see just the beginning of triple shadow event during the Sun is below the horizon. My question is whether the shadows will be visible at the time during the sunrise and shortly after?

Mark, I live on the East Coast of the US (suburban Miami). I was up at 2:30am this morning and Jupiter was barely clearing the trees and roof tops here. As much as I would like to observe this one I doubt I will get the opportunity.

Possibly someone observing on the Atlantic US seashore may get to view the latter part of the triple transit as Jupiter rises over the horizon.

Hi Mark,

Thanks for letting me know, and sorry for any confusion. While I had mentioned on my web page that the event would be visible in the Eastern US I should have been more specific.

Based on the information I had I wasn't 100% sure where it would be visible so I gave the UT time to aid other observers to determine if it was going to be visible where they lived.

So to clear up any confusion this event will be visible mostly for observers in Europe and the Northeastern Eastern United States.

Once again apologies to all any confusion I may have caused.

Best,

Eric Jamison

hi all,
a had luck !
I stood at the
VdS holiday observatory - Kircheim/Thüringen
I used first the TAK 130/1000mm with my Tele Vue Zoom 3-6mm at 200x. At the beginning several thin cloud moved in front of Jupiter so the image was dark in the 5"er.
Now I changed on the Schiefspiegler 250/5000mm. With my bino and WW 20mm I had 250x. It was perfect.
Jupiter walked higher and shadow for shadow moved over Jupiters cloudy atmosphere. Shadow IV was very big and not perfectly round !
The seeing was not good so I could not see some details.
Here are two results:

a) 4:45 UT I 37° II 133° U 4

Bye
Christian

hi all,

b) 5:10 UT I 52° II 149° U 3/4

Interesting too was the race from the moons
I & II beside Jupiter.

Christian, very good and very detailed drawing!

I was also lucky with weather and had a very good seeing. Here is my sketch, made using my 120mm refractor. Callisto's shadow was big and a bit fuzzy, contrasting to the other two shadows, which were tiny and sharp.

Regards,

hi Diego,

thank´s a lot, but I find Your sketch very great too !
I feel that at Your posession Jupiter stands some degree higher with better seeing.
Here at the observatory/ Thuringia the seeing is mostly bad...

Bye Christian
