Some Nice Crater
      #6365696 - 02/09/14 10:00 AM Attachment (21 downloads)

I don't know the name of it, somewhere not far south of Plato. Anyone know? I though it might be Kirch, but images don't look right.

It seems to have a nice mound with a crater in the center of it...in the center of the crater. Was I suffering from the hollow mask illusion this whole time? I thought it was beautiful, so I sketched it.

Trying to develop a technique painting with a mouse and a PC paint program. Not sure I like it yet, but...here goes.

Piazzi Smyth?
Whichever one it is a very nice sketch, using a computer/ mouse no less!

Rod, thanks. Yea, not sure if it's Piazzi Smyth either. Might be, still searching for one with a hole in it's center in that area just south of Plato.

Norme, beautiful sketch. Is it Helicon? It looks spot on to me, except when I translate the diagonal flip of your MCT. Did you use a diagonal with this observation?

Edit: Not Lambert...it's Timocharis for sure. Its features match and this images is almost the same sun angle.

Cool!

Thank you, Jason. Yes, diagonal used. West is down, north to the left.

Timocharis, definitely. Nice investigative work, Norme.

Yea, Jason, man that took a while. I just picked a nice one to try sketching. Identification must be an acquired skill.

Ahhh ok Timocharis. I was wondering if it were Piazzi Smyth or something else. Now that Ive seen the original it totally makes sense and you got a lot of nice representative details in and around it. Well done.

Pete

Pete, I think I am becoming a lunar-tic. Timocharis was a nice looking crater.

I keep looking at that sketch thinking it's nowhere near as nice as Jef's most recent one. Nor the works of Frank and others. But, it might just be my style, so maybe I should claim it as such and press on.

Hi-hi. I also tried this technique. I think the mouse to draw is like soap draw. It develops one's patience. Take a drawing board. (For example Wacom ) then you are building a wonderful drawings. Much better than the mouse.

Excellent work !!

Tamas, thanks for the advice. Whats Wacom?

It does test your patients drawing with a mouse, no doubt.

Is this one done directly at the EP? I know that Peter Grego is working like that. See for his Gassendi crater here.

I use this: Wcom Bamboo Fun.
I became very fond. It is easy and pleasant. One drawback is it will not detect the pen's decision. But you get used to it.

The Intous is much more advanced. Also check out what they know.
These draw more pleasant.

I use two programs for digital drawing: GIMP and MyPaint.

MyPaint is a like traditional drawing prepared. I can draw it.
Sketch with MyPaint

GIMP is complex. Do you know a lot of digital effects.
LunarX - GIMP
Creascent Moon - GIMP

Tamas, not really know much about digital effects. I just make it up as I go along being ignorant of technology.

I don't even know what MyPaint + Wacom Bamboo Fun even means, but your rendering is beautiful. As is your pastel work.

I gotta figure this out, thank you for shining the light in my ignorant eyes.

Norme,

If you have developed a taste for digital drawing, you can try these two programs.
Perhaps they seemed to be confusing the first time. But do not be dissuaded from doing so.
You draw very well. What would happen if you tried a more powerful program?

Nice work Guys,

I can hardly get pencil drawing down, never mind with a mouse!

Good Sketch Norme,

Ken

Tamas, I am flattered because I am like Ken admits to being. I don't have any artistic talent that I am aware of, maybe too much of a knack for technical accuracy than artistic license or skill. This is what makes lunar art so difficult for me, I want all the details just right instead of relaxing and let it flow from the paper. But, hey, it's worth an effort. Come on, Ken, grab a pencil.

Jef, well, no not at the eyepiece directly. There is a pencil sketch in between, then reproduced in sketch paint.

Norme,

What a wonderful sketch.
If you can do this well with a mouse, think how great you would be with a pointy object like a pencil on a lunar crater.

Frank

Thanks, Frank. Maybe pencil, charcoal, and pastels require artistic skills you, Jef, and others have. For PC paint, just lay it on and take it off as needed.
