Thanks Maurice for the tips. I'll do some experimenting and see what works best for me.

I'm very impressed with the results you get, especially from London. I lived there for a few years and don't remember seeing many stars visually either through many, many cloudy nights or light pollution.

Very nice colour images. I'm very tempted to get a Lodestar color but I'm also considering a couple of other options as well.

Lodestar really looks great in both mono and color. I'm considering either that or an Atik 314L+ as my next investment for semi-live viewing...I love these super sensitive, very low noise sony ccds!

Yes, the Lodestar's are pretty good, especially when you consider their primary purpose is as guide cameras.

It would be very interesting to see how well something like the Atik 314L+ performs for near-live views.

The Atik 314l+ has the sony icx285 ccd so it should perform very well for near live views as that is a very sensitive chip with very low dark current and one of the lowest read noises I've ever seen. The total system noise of the camera has been measured by a couple review articles as less than the read noise alone on some other common astro ccd chips (I'll dig up the references if anyone cares). I think that the native gain level will require images to be stretched more for viewing than an astro video image generally is, but the higher bit depth readout (16-bit versus capture cards are usually 8-bit with some that have parts working at 10-bit) gives a lot more dynamic range for stretching to work with.

Kyle, what software would you be using for the near-live viewing with this camera?

I am currently developing software for near-live viewing with both video-based devices and usb-based devices that I'd be using. If you'd like to be included int he beta feel free to PM me.

Very nice Maurice. I'm amazed at what you can do from London.
