A Tale of 10 inches F/8 Reflector
      #2252168 - 03/12/08 06:38 AM

Hello every one,
In the following thread I would like to introduce my 1st dobsonian telescope project, I have read a lot but still know a little, so I decided to mix all what I have read together and produce the upcoming telescope.

I might be correct sometimes and wrong sometimes, so any comment will be welcome, I just want to help other novice like me to get benefit from my ideas and mistakes.

I will start from the very beginning so hang on there don’t get bored too soon, also I will try to post more photos than comments as one photo worth 1000 words and maybe more especially in ATM.

Maybe my playing cards are still mixed (which thing to do 1st) but any way I’ve decided to start.

Thanks in advanced to every one who will participate in the party or even watch it out.

So lets rock and roll…….

This will be the bottom part of the tube (mirror cell holder) the diameter is 28 CM, the mirror is 25 cm, this should be 30 cm but this what I have found.

I suspect just about everybody here, even those playing with a full deck, has the playing cards in their deck mixed up a bit!
I'm watching with interest, that 6.3m tubing already has me wondering what the f ratio is.

I'm sure that's just the raw length he had to buy to get a good price and he intends on cutting it a bit shorter.

First projects are a blast and undoubtedly a learning experience. My batting average for complete (95%) successes is 0 for 3, though I will give two of those a partial/usable success rating while the first was a complete failure except in regards to generating the will to do better.

Each of my failures has revolved around a lack of rigidity, either wobbling, bouncing or falling apart. That's the best I can offer.

I'm looking forward to pictures of your progress! - j

Ok lets talk about mirror cell now;
Aluminum sheet 1 cm thick. dim 47 cm X 45 cm
Very dirty and full of 0.5 mm deep scratches, sorry this is what I have found for 35$ from a junkyard, and he has no better sheets from the same thickness.

Note: This is the 1st attempt for me to cut circles shape, caution must be taken when using jigsaw especially for metal cutting, it is good to have some supervision from experienced hand to give you the necessary directions, but unfortunately I have no other choice and no help from any one and I like to do things by my self but even though I am not advising any novice hands to do this without proper help.

I have used a lot of Vaseline to cool the saw and to lubricate the cutting process, and I found it works like magic, of course I have proceeded slowly.

Now I will move to another part (I will get back to mirror cell again once I've finished smoothing out its rough surface).

Below is what I will use to connect the Aluminum tubes with the 28 cm tubes.

I have cut this 16 mm screws (12 pieces 50 mm long will be used to connect 6 tubes) from a big one 1 meter long using angle grinder, I don't know the proper name of that big screw, but I think it is clear.

The big screw is just threaded rod. Tip: put a nut on the rod before cutting it, after cutting it remove the nut over the cut portion and it will rechase the threads for you.

After 2 hours of rough grinding the aluminum plates against each others (like if I am making flat) the 4 surfaces were better some how, (next time I will search for better plate.

Below I draw 120 degrees lines and prepare the bottom cell plate for initial cutting process.
