Well yesterday I bought a 6" f/5.875 mirror with semi-enhanced coating from O.W.L.. Some of the other stats. are P-V 1/14, and a Strehl of .98. I am the OTA only. I am going to use an 8" OD concrete form for the tube. I have an old 1 1/4" RP focuser that has been laying around the house for the last 8 years that I will use, and I ordered a Antares 1.52" 1/18 wave diagonal. I plan on getting a 1800Destiny three curved vane diagonal. I am going to try, and build the mirror mount myself. I will make the mirror mount using 1/2" Baltic Birch plywood, 1/4-20 carriage bolts, Compression springs rated for 10.68 pound, and some 1/4" wing nuts. Well that about covers it.

you should do yourself a favor and not skimp on the focuser. It will make all the difference. a one speed moonlite would do just fine.
That will be one awesome scope.
you could always do a Mark Harry knock-off

I have not built a scope since 1989. I use to grind my own mirrors, but after 8 mirrors I got burned out. I did enjoy the tube assembly part a great deal though! Yeah I love Moonlite focusers, but I just don't have the money. Maybe I will sell some extra gear, and use the money from that to finance a new focuser.

Have a look at Gary Seronik's telescope making website, he has plans for a mirror cell and curved spider.that could save you some dough for a focuser. I have built both and been very happy with the results. Dave

The beauty of a project like this is that if you're unhappy with some part of the design you're not stuck with it. When my home built 6" was due for a re-coat last spring I decided few other improvements to the rest of the scope were in order. By the time I finished the optics were the only original parts that remained.

Is your OWL mirror coated with silver or aluminum? I need to get my Dob mirror re-coated and wondered if you have an opinion about O.W.L. and their services. And I am new around here, and I could not figure out how to start a thread, sorry :-)

The mirror is on the way, and should be delivered this Friday. The tube is on the way as well. I changed my mind, and purchased a Protostar Blacklite tube instead of the concrete forming tube. Thats all for now.

Mike, all looks nice. I just got my 6" f/10.9 mirror back from OWL, refigured and coated with semi-enhanced as well. I'm in the process of putting together a temporary tube so I can test it. Eventually I'll build an aluminum tube for it.
I like your mirror's focal length. I have a 6" f/5 that is my "main" telescope, and sometimes I wish it was just a bit longer in the focal length department, around that f/6-ish that yours is.

I will use long screws to make up for the bottom disc being small. This mirror mount design is like the adjustable size mirror mounts that fit more then one ID size. If my idea does not work I will make another disc.

Well Bryan of Protostar said he mailed the tube last Friday by Parcel Post. The tube still has not shown up after a week. When I checked the Post Office web site it said that the package should take 4 business days. Four business days was yesterday. So your guess is as good as mine on when the tube will show up! The waiting is really tough!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My experience is that Parcel Post can be both substantially faster - or slower - than what the USPS site states. And the more you want it, the slower it is.

Well for better or worse I have sent an inquiry thru PayPal to Protostar. It has now been just about four weeks (Oct. 15) since I sent in my order. Twice I was told that the tube was shipped, and still no tube. So I decided to get PayPal involved since I seem to be getting no where on my own.

So far I have sent two messages thru PayPal asking what is going on with my tube order. ProtoStar has not answered either e-mails. It looks like I am going to have to escalate to a claim at PayPal if ProtoStar is not going to respond. I think waiting 29 days for the tube is a fair amount of time to wait. So I'm going on the PayPal website now to send in a claim.

The tubing is only sold in 48" lengths so last night I cut the tube to 42". I have laid out where the focuser will go, and next I will lay out where the holes for the mirror mount will go. Stay tuned.

Instead of painting the tube I used MonoKote. Using MonoKote is not easy or simple! It is extremely difficult to get the wrinkles out. After struggling with the MonoKote I just accepted I was not going to get the wrinkles out. So here are some pictures.

Has anyone out there heard from Bryan at Protostar? I've emailed, called, and even sent him a letter via snail mail, but no response. He's got $300. of my money and I've got none of the parts I ordered. Buyer beware. What's going on?

In the past, there have been long delays in getting secondary holders and spiders from Protostar. Other items such as tubes, flockboard, and secondary mirrors have typically been shipped without serious delay. I've had several orders filled in the last year but I tend to avoid the Protostar secondary holders/spiders because of the potential for delays and my own lack of patience.
I hope Brian contacts you soon after you have gone to so much trouble to ascertain your order status. I hate to hear about these problems because there are several Protostar products that I really like.

Hi Jim,
Thanks for your input on this. I wouldn't mind if Protostar just contacted me and didn't ignore me. Both of his phone numbers apparently have been disconnected. Just wondering if anyone out there has had any luck getting in touch with Bryan.

Bryan, and I exchanged e-mails last week. The problem is Bryan is a one man operation, and he is very busy!

I had a lively e-mail exchange with Bryan earlier this year regarding Protostar flockboard. He cut down a length custom sized so it would fit in their 4" shorter shipping carton to save me about $20 on ridiculous US Post shipping to Canada. Great guy, awesome products and no problems with communication in my experience. As has been said elsewhere before, they moved and have been super busy. A 30 to 60 day wait is just part of the price one has to be willing to pay. It's worth it!

As I previously mentioned, he's ignored my emails and both of his phone numbers have been disconnected. Over a month ago he told me that my parts should ship "in a few days." I paid him by check so I have no recourse. I don't know what else I can say except the customer service leaves a lot to be desired.

Mike, I think the Monokote looks great! I've used Monokote on radio controlled airplanes, and it certainly is a LOT easier to apply when there are only wing ribs and/or fuselage formers/stringers where the material is being attached. That way a heat gun can be used to pull the material taut by shrinking it. Even so, you did a great job with it.
I just got my 6" f/10.9 "prototype tube" finished over the holiday weekend, and will be sharing some info about that build in the near future. The views of the Moon at 550x were FANTASTIC.

I guess I am not alone in applying monokote. I used my heat gun. We must be doing something wrong...Gary Seronik has used it on a scope he featured in S&T and it looked good. I don't think my heat gun puts out enough heat it's a cheapie. I also tried contact paper that was even worse! I gave up before I gave it a whack with a sledge hammer. I finally sprayed the tube with a can of spray paint. I'm still not happy with the results. If I can find someone to powder coat it that's what I'll do.Maybe the local body shop could spray paint it for me.

Having covered quite a few model airplanes, don't feel badly about it. Monokote can be tough to work with, especially on solid surfaces like a telescope tube.

When applying Monokote over a solid shape, like a telescope tube, I first mist the surface with Windex. Then the Monokote is carefully rolled onto the surface, and the liquid prevents bubbles being trapped. The ammonia in the windex will partially activate the adhesive. Iron it down starting at the centre of the sheet, and working towards the edges. Be sure to have the iron temp set below the monokote's shrink temperature, you just want adhesion.

I don't know if misting the surface would work on a craft paper tube that well. The tube material tends to let any liquid soak into the surface.

A few nights back I replaced the homemade mirror mount with a Meridian mount. While I was changing out the mirror mount I decided to reinforce that end of the tube. So I took the six inch section I had cut off the tube earlier, and cut out this section length wise to make a slip ring. Then I took the slip ring I had made, and put it inside the main tube. I glued the slip ring in position with Elmer's Glue All. Now that section of the tube has 1/4 inch walls instead of 1/8th inch walls.
