I know most of you ATMs are proud of the neat scopes that you have built down through the years! But lets see the places from whence your scopes were born! I know that some of you have workshops of various types-places where you put your projects togather! And dont be shy cause it might be a bit messy-because mine is( I call it Organized Chaos).I've got a few projects going on, such as the Reflector Versa-Ped and the Refractor Versaped. Taking one at a time.Something to get the New year started !! Gary

good thread!

when (not if!) the atm happens it will be here; slowly getting organised. my nmsu allsky cam computer is to the right of the hydraulic press. my cg5/200mm newtonian are hidden behind the toolchest. prior to the cg5, i had made an embarrassingly bad mount.

merry xmas

What you guys are showing are WAY too clean and organized compared to my SJ (Sanford Junkplace). Maybe I'll post a pic after Christmas Day, if I get the nerve.

Here is an ancient thread on the same subject from 2006

ATM CN Workshops

Mine did not really change until this year when everything has been dismantled for a 250 mile move to a new location that will be finalized in the summer of 2013. Almost everything has been moved to my new house in Iowa.

But the old thread is still pretty good. Lots of people that have unfortunately disappeared.

My Neighbor gave me that old Tek storage scope, but his son robbed all the tubes out of it for his audio equipment! One of these days I might find enough tubes to restore it. I also have a Tek 454 and a Tek 465 that work quite well.

That old scope brings back memories. I remember turning one on at work early on every cold winter morning, and leaning against it to get warm. They cranked out some serious heat from vacuum tubes.

I sometimes see on ebay NOS tubes in bulk assorted lots, there were lots of TV repairman, etc. that had these. I know one who's got box of tubes is 99% full of NOS tubes. Looks like yours would be really really old ones though.

Ok to stay on topic, I promise a pic of my shop when it's ready in a few months.

Great reports, everyone ! I was very excited to get a home that had the workshop already set up. There also is a door that leads from the shop to a covered patio and then to an outside driveway slab- a great place to set up scopes for observing! I'm in the final stages with one of my main scope projects. Thanks for posting! G

You guys up north with the basements are lucky (except when they flood). When we moved into our new house here in S. FL. we added on a room for my "ham shack" with enough extra room for overflow storage (mostly of my hobby junque). There is enough length to the room to test mirrors with 20' ROC (and I can make it dark enough), but I don't know how stable temperature wise it will be. I'm "into" other DIY activities such as wood working, and electronics. I'm now looking at setting up a small foundry for casting aluminum. I'll probably try casting parts for a mirror cell for the 7" plate glass mirror I've been making. I've tried running plop under Wine under Linux (it crashes now and then), and it looks like a 6 or 9 point cell will work fine for a 7" F7 19mm thick mirror.

Here is my mini machine shop for small projects.

Current projects include an off-axis F10 spherical 2.5" reflector, restoring a classic Edmund scope, creating a Dob mount for said Edmund scope.

I'm trying to figure out how to make my first newtonian focuser for the 2.5" at the moment. I made a really simple mirror cell with 3point adjustment so far.

I live in East Tennessee and never had a basement before. Can't imagine not having one now. FWIW I grew up in Louisiana where just a few people had basements. Only they were called indoor pools.

Well, Tom's got a pretty awesome shop there (the moving guys must have groaned when they looked at that job....)
But Norm's got some very cool vintage machinery!

Something that always amazes me about this hobby/passion is how often truly exquisite optical gear emerges from small hobby-grade workshops!

Tom's shop is an inspiration to us all. At a star party his wife served food from his benches, it was that clean! No HF organizers for him, all his tools rest in beautiful hand crafted oak cabinets.

After seeing it I spent two days cleaning and sorting my shop, but at it's best it will never compare with his. However the time I spend looking for misplaced tools has fallen from 90% to 80%, so my productivity has doubled. Thanks Tom.

Eric

If you like Old Cra...err.. I mean vintage here are
a couple more. Yuh it is old but it works and comes in handy
when making scopes and other ATM stuff. The best part is
most of it cost little or nothing. I pity my wife when
she has to get rid of it all. That shaper must weigh 3000 lbs what fun it was putting it into the basement through the bulkhead

Still need to replace the flat belt for the Sebastian and locate a few parts, such as a tool post. But all the change gears are there, as is a 3-jaw chuck. I had to fabricate a new treadle, as it was missing. I made a mistake, though - I've got the linkage rods bolted to the shaft and the treadle, but should have run them through the top of the treadle with nuts on the underside so the treadle could pull down on the rods. Without having ever run one of these before, it never occurred to me that it might HURT to have my foot be under the treadle while the flywheel was turning! It was pointed out to me by someone on the practicalmachinist's forum.

-Tim.

A keyboard, and a screen, mounted right there on the lathe!

I do like those old flat-belt tools....they made 'em to last back then!

LOL! Nah, I was only putting the computer there so I could upload photos as I was cleaning and assembling it.

Here's a very nice ~1940 SB 9" Model C that I bought from the same guy who had the Sebastian. It's missing most of the change gears and has almost no tooling, but it's in amazing condition.

Tim,
The big lathe is a 14" F.E. Reed. (Reed eventually merged with
Prentice and they became Reed/Prentice machinery). The smaller
lathe is an 11" Seneca Falls quite similar to South Bend. I
inherited it from my father.

Bought the saw used 22 years ago and added the PM siding table. It is the biggest timesaver in the shop.

Very nice Tom, one outfeed table serves two saws. The centralized vac position is perfect.

Did you move your shop yourself or did you have riggers/movers?

John

I've had this saw since the early 80's. It was built in the late 40's and it's very tired. I've replaced the motor and fence over the years. I added a leaf on the right that has a big router mounted underneath. I'll salvage the router and leaf but the saw itself is done. It won't be making the trip to my new location. I think I'll actually buy a new saw ( ), unless of course I find something on Craiglist.

My table saw is nothing special. An early 70s craftsmen that a friends dad got for Christmas. He'd lost part of a finger on a table saw so he didn't want to have anything to do with it. It was stored in his garage in the original wrappers for 30 years. I got it for 75 bucks. I had to oil wetland the cast iron top as it had gotten wet and was surface rusty. I replaced the fence and miter with Incra replacements and added a rockler router table in place off the right wing. Put it on wheels so I could move it around. I wish I had in and out feed tables though, since I seem to cut a lot of plywood!

I had regular movers (Mayflower) do the move. They rented a fork lift to lift the mill and lathe. I did the rigging with rollers and a machinery pry bar. All the rest of the machines were lifted by the crew and rolled on dollies to their new place.

Here's my saw - a Powermatic I bought new about 25 years ago, and several other machine tools.
All the tables and benches are the same height, so everything is an infeed/outfeed table. You can see a few crosscut sleds hanging from the ceiling. This photo shoes most of the shop that's behind me in my scope-and-tripod photo above.....

Tim,
they are a great little lathe!, But have you ever tried to turn a 7' lamp post to fit a Jaegger's mount?
Great things those skateboard wheels!
Wow just realised this makes 1000 posts! Only took a few years!

Construction season is almost here and my 6 week layoff is about over. I had to clean the shop so it's a great time for some photos and to point out a few features.

The heart of a shop (I'm more of an amateur tripod maker,BTW) is the table saw. Due to minimal space I wanted an outfeed table that would fold down and the accordion style legs fit the bill. Table is a torsion box and has stayed flat for 3-4 years so far....light and strong!

Therefore I will NOT post a picture of mine...
