How I spent my spring break (Trailer conversion).
      #5780503 - 04/05/13 08:55 PM Attachment (62 downloads)

I spent this past week fixing up my old cargo trailer, so I can camp in it. Here is a before shot of the door, before putting in the latch.

'nother view. BTW, I reinforced the door with a bit of scrap wood to keep it from deforming when I tightened down on the latch mounting screws.

I installed insulation in the walls. This was kind of tough because the luan is anchored to the "Rhino Lining tm" on the floor, so I could only peel it back.

I made the opening in my caulking tube too large, but I would be darned if I was going to the hardware store again!

Edit: (use the right form of "too", silly)

Not shown: I put a second layer of insulation on the ceiling. (I call this stuff "Aluminum Bubble Wrap" which causes blank stares from the hardware store clerks.) I also wired up the dome light that you see in the first "insulation" pic so that I could simply plug in a cord to my Battery Box, and turn it on and off from the wall switch.

One more thing: The portable AC unit draws 9 amps, so it will be fine with the 15 amp inlet.

An astro camper. Very cool.
Where is your fleet of scopes going to store?

I'd love to do such a conversion. I see a lot of cargo trailers at star parties that have been modified to serve as telescope transport/sleeping quarters/computer and charts office. I've seen lots of neat fold-down beds in them that fold flat against the wall of the trailer when not in use.

I just wanted to do the simplest conversion possible. My scopes are in my house, plus I've got a 20" mirror that I need to build a scope for. (I have some of the components already.)

Nice job Greg, wish I had something like that. That 20" mirror project sounds interesting, going to be a light one or regular classic K&B type telescope?

Definitely not light. I'm planning on making in driven from the get-go and I want it to be accurate.

Do you have some details on the 20" mirror? How thick, what material is it made of?, what is the focal ratio?

Sure, It's 1.75" thick, f/3.5, fused silica, made by Gordon Waite.

f/3.5, perfect for keeping the feet on the ground! Should be fairly light too at that thickness.

Quick Update: I bought a staple gun so that I could put up the trim pieces. This shot also shows the front "Skylight" feature that lets in some light, so I didn't insulate it. However you can also see the nice and shiny new insulation and the fully functional dome light. (The fixture had a switch on it which turned out to be bad. The wall switch is good, though.)

Edit, you can also see that I put some padding on the door frame. Can't tell you how many times I've hit my head on that frame, over the years. Now that I'll be using this for camping, I'll be going in and out more, hence the padding.
