Scope buddies forum?
      #2327677 - 04/14/08 10:29 PM

I had made this suggestion in the Feedback forum and it was suggested I make it here to see what response the idea got, so here it is…

When I used to scuba dive it was not uncommon for a person to show up to a dive and have his partner cancel on him or her. This led to the environment where two people who are complete strangers might end up spending the day together. By doing this, many a days diving was saved and many more new friends were made. Today, I am still friends with some of the people I met off the cuff.

So the idea was to set up a forum for ‘Scope Buddies’ or whatever you want to call it. This would allow people to get together without the constraints of a club environment or waiting weeks or months for a star party to roll around. Someone looking to go out (especially us newbies) could find people to view with and become more educated. It also would give an outlet for people who are on vacation or just in town and need to get the skinny on good viewing sites and perhaps just someone to view with.

A forum that is not so visited would not be helpful for this, but this forum is extremely active, so it might be beneficial to the people involved here.

So what do you all think?

I'll be in Vero Beach during the full moon starting on the 20th until the 27th. I wonder how far I will be from Lakeland? I am going to bring my 3.5" refractor and a small tripod. I was hoping to at least see the Southern Cross and Omega Centauri.

Sounds like a good idea to me! I've met a few local CN'ers Dave ( Bowmoreman) & Dave (Siriusly) and have had contact with a few other local CN'ers who hope to join us someday , We now have a group of 5 that meet at our local dark sky site's! We welcome any CN'ers who would like to get together for a night of observing to join us!

I like it.

I'm thinking about the possible formats (in increasing order of complexity):
1. A simple forum where people post "Going to location X on date Y." People can post replies or PM the poster.
2. A forum with one thread for each "location" (city, region, etc) and a way to subscribe to a specific thread. A person could post to the "Western Mass" thread. People would see the post or be alerted via a subscription.
3. Ideally, the posts and subscriptions should also be available on a Google Earth map where people can post planned viewing sessions up to about a week in advance, and they are automatically removed after the date. This would allow people to search the map for events in their area.

Anybody got a little extra time on their hands?

"Ditto" comes to mind for me...

I have tried a few normal posts to see if folks were in the areas I was visiting while on Business or Vacation but unfortunately I didn't quite give enough time.

But I think a dedicated forum would be beneficial, at least to try it out.

A thought....

Down below, under the heading 'Specialty Forums', there is a topic.... "Astro Outreach, Clubs and Star Parties"

Perhaps an option, is to make a post like "Scope buddy - date - place"....then in the body state where, when u looking for a partner ?

In a way, guess you could say 2 ppl is a Star party ?

.....just a thought.

The Outreach forum seemed to me as more of a group thing. What I am suggesting here is a way to make astronomy more accessible by allowing just one or two people to get together on a personal basis. Star parties and clubs are great; don't get me wrong, but they are also few and far between.

To go back to my diving analogy from earlier, diving is has a few cardinal rules. Chief among them (after don't screw up the environment) is that you don't go out alone. The inherent dangers of diving require that someone be there to get your back should an emergency arise. This one precaution has had the benefit of bringing countless friends together because NO ONE wants to spend the time and effort and money (and it can be more expensive than astronomy) then have to cancel because someone didn't show or had a gear failure or some such nonsense. That is how the atmosphere has developed that people can hook up, even though they might be complete strangers. If you go to any of the major diving sites, or read Florida Scuba News (one of the diving periodicals), check the dive shops, or just show up at the boat, you will find people who are wanting to dive, but need a partner and want to find people who are in the same situation. This is not out of desperation, but out of love for the sport. Google the term 'Dive Buddies' and you'll see what I mean.

Here's a great example...

Dive Buddy Listings

I believe that kind of situation is also available here. There is no proscription against going out solo, but it sure is fun to go with another person. People just don't have a place to get the word out...

I guess I'm just cynical. When I have met people I didn't know from the Internet, it has been in a very public setting during daylight hours. In addition, only those people posting they were coming got the details (location, specific times) sent to them in a private way.

It seems a little dangerous to be meeting people I don't know in the dark, probably in a remote place, with hundreds (if not thousands, for some of you) of dollars of equipment...I think you know where I'm going with this.

I don't think I would meet anyone from anywhere for the first time in a dark out of the way place. However, we are moving into 'what if' territory here. The same common sense rules apply here as anywhere else. Things like don't give your address out over the web to anyone.

If you do not trust the format, then you do not have to use it. That's the beauty of the internet. You get to choose how you participate. It's been my experience though that most people are cool and want nothing more than what they say they are, in spite of what the papers and TV would like you to believe. It's all in how you look at it. What's the saying? Trust but verify?

Those are very good points and we all need to use common security tactics.....the logistics can be worked out in such a way so that anyone interested in meeting can feel comfortable about everyone they are meeting. It's a good idea if people even prove their club memberships or some other form of identification to assure another level of adherrance to a sort of code of ethics if you will. I think it is generally a good idea if the details can be worked out.

Tony,

I think Arunah Hill is within your range. (google it) It's a Natural Science Center in the foothills of the Berkshires and skies have been so dark at times that the milky way has truly been mistaken for a cloud! This is unheard of in Massachusetts. Even though snow has been gone in these parts for weeks; Arunah still had two feet of snow as of last week so I won't be going there any time real soon. I will be going there over the next couple months though. We had a guy from an Albany Area Astronomy group join us there once so it is doable from where you are. More to follow. Clear skies!

Could it be listed as just another topic of this forum? Sounds like a great idea for me because I camp a lot during the summer and am always visiting different areas. Sometimes, campgrounds - due to the nature - don't have great viewing sites. It's disappointing to leave and then see a place you might have used. As on eBay, a ***** idea!

I like the idea presented by the original poster.

My main observing buddy is a single guy who's about 20 years younger than me, so he obviously has better things to do than hang out in the middle of the desert with me! And during the new (or even 3/4) moon weekend, our schedules aren't always in synch. I don't really know any others locally, and would love to know that my 2+ hour drive to the dark sky site would not be in vain. If I could know in advance that several people are going to be at a particular site for some informal observing, that would be great. I definitely would head out with the scope out more often.

I am interested. I live in Lakeland, Florida.

I feel that these niche forums such as cloudy nights are pretty safe. It is always possible that you could hook up with a wierdo, but unlikely. Our equipment is pretty specialized and tough to sell without calling attention to the seller. Not as big a market for it as jewelry, metals, electronics, etc. Our forums are not as lucrative for sexual predators as other venues.

The media tries tocatch our interest with scary stories to catch viewers and sell advertising. They make things look out of proportion. I have sent rare coins to people I chatted with on the internet for them to review and see if they wanted to purchase and never been ripped off. They were people whose names I was familiar with from participating in the forums over a long period of time, but had never laid eyes on them. You gotta trust that most humans are good. Even in the most dangerous places on the earth, people live their entire lives and get old and die of natural causes. If you feel uncomfortable, don't go. If you are nervous and want to go anyway, take a pepper spray or taser or pistol.

I am a middle aged, overweight and balding male. I am probably not a target for a rapist. If my equipment gets stolen I will live through it. Its not like losing a limb or sight. My chances of being killed and cut up into little pieces are astromomically small. If I don't go and use my equipment, then I have lost the value of it anyway.

or High Knob: http://www.cleardarksky.com/c/WrldEdSpPAkey.html?1

as they are both pretty close.

I was gonna say something about Arunah Hill being an overnighter ...

but then I realized pretty much any good stargazing is an overnighter

Very good idea. My astronomy club uses an unmoderated email forum for people to plan observing sessions. However, you don't have to be a member of the club to join the email group. It has occurred to me in the past that someone with malicious intent could definitely take advantage of someone in the middle of nowhere, at night, with thousands of dollars of equipment. I have had nothing but good experiences with this method, but meeting someone new in a remote place that I have never been before always gives me a little pause (and I know it drives my girlfriend nuts).

Compared to that, I would be far more willing to trust a CN member that had to login and participate in these forums in order to use this feature.

I would be interested in doing some observing with someone from my area (Wichita Falls, Texas - Lawton, Oklahoma). Maybe there could be some sort of list of folks interested. There could always be a before hand meeting in a public place to develop a little trust or find any compatability problems.

If marketed, this kind of forum could be a draw to the site, not just an additional forum. People could come from other sites just to sign up and find a buddy.

I disagree with it being restricted to registered users though. Not because it's really a bad idea, but common sense would dictate any exchange of personal info be done in a PM or e-mail, and letting prospective members see that connections are being made can only draw people in.

That's the problem. If it's posted in a regular forum, it gets lost right away because there are other things being posted. In this kind of forum, just put your city in the title and it makes it simple for people to browse. Plus people who go there will inherently be looking for someone instead of info about something else...

I like the idea too. I've already gotten invitations by being a member of CN and you can see by my posts that I'm mostly a reader and not so often a poster (meaning it took very little exposure of my location in the avatar to spawn an invitation).

The other idea is to have coordinated 'rallies' that involve multiple folks that coordinate for a fair weather event (if cloudy the event is canceled). This would be far short of a star party and would be a more informal gathering of a couple of 'buddies'. That would minimize the danger, real or perceived, of meeting strangers from the internet. Still, coordination should be limited to members (which is no guarantee) to help preserve the privacy of the event.

The example divers list is a good idea. I'm sure the divers must have thought of the security issue as well. Let's face it, astronomy isn't the only thing that involves a lot of expensive equipment. I wonder how they handle these issues?

You know, if this were a forum for something a bit more pedestrian like sports or some activity where we might meet the cast of 'Deliverance' I would be more worried about things like getting mugged or robbed or whatever.

Astronomy (and diving for that matter) tends to attract a more intelligent crowd of people. Most of us here can afford a couple of spare dollars, or else we wouldn't own the equipment we need to feed our addiction. People of intelligence are a lot less likely to commit a crime than people who aren't. As for people who 'prowl the web just LOOKING for someone to rob; well, that's the kind of paranoia our society has overfed us because it just happens to sell tabloids and get good ratings. I choose not to live my life on that level and a bunch of others here obviously feel the same way...

Hi Kevin R,

Plenty of good points raised, and as Herb (Panhard) has pointed out, a single post in a forum asking for "buddies" would very quickly get lost.

I would suggest changing the title of the Astro Outreach, Star Parties, etc. forum to include this "Scope Buddies" thing. As it is, Outreach gets very little traffic. I think they could handle the extra visitors. And if it gets overwhelmed, the scope buddies thing could then be split off on to its own forum.

I think this is a great idea. Its kind of funny, I saw this thread, but never opened it before today because I thought it was about a product (maybe I thought it was Scope Buggies) that didn't sound interesting to me...

Anyway, the first thing I thought about was how much this sounded like musician boards. Like the diving analogy, playing music is another hobby that revolves around people getting together to enjoy a common interest. I have met, both on-line and in-person, some great people to jam with in my area that I never would have met if it hadn't been for various musician-finder sites. My wife thinks I'm crazy that I would meet with complete strangers in some pretty unsavory places (rehearsal studios in otherwise empty industrial parks, you know, the kind of places you see in mob movies where they...settle their differences) but I have never had a problem with it. I've had people that want to meet up at a bar ahead of time and thats cool too.

One option that works well for musicians, is a board where you list some info about yourself as kind of an open invitation for people to contact you. Since its completely optional, you only post what you want people to know about you/your equipment. Maybe its a matter of you having a scope that someone else is interested in checking out before buying or someone needs help with collimation. Its simply a way to say that you are open to being contacted and possibly meet in person.

Still ain't skeered!

I hear ya midnight4blues. I'm a working musician myself. I've played in symphonies in the safe crowd and I've played in dives with the scary crowd. Seen a few fights and stopped a few, too. I've also ridden a motorcycle around some crowds whose names I won't repeat here (don't ask). Sure there's some risk, but I don't base my endeavors on worrying too much (well, but then you don't have to be STUPID either--like wearing the wrong patch in the wrong territory or playing a tune that you know will cause trouble).

Everyone: I know security's a concern. I'm not against it. Everybody's different in how they feel about it. If we implement some reasonable security measures, then everyone will be happy, including the ones who don't worry about it. (Just carry a .45 and a Crocodile Dundee bowie and all will be merry. --just kidding). But really, if we do this thing, we should consider each other's needs, and some may truly need more than others whether for health reasons or whatever. Me.....

I ain't skeered of nobody.......'cept the DENTIST!

I have owned a scope now for tree years and have just found someone to view with on non meeting nights at the club. Some of my frinds are intrested in my scope but when invited they say yea I will come and never show. I like to view with someone else, especially someone with a bigger scope than I have! I think this is a great idea. Although Im not greatly concerned about security my self I can see why some would be. As said by some before me if some common sense is used along with a little security for the ones who need it to feel safe I think this idea would be a great asset to Cloudy Nights!

UPSTATE NEW YORK, WHERE ARE YOU!?!?!

I think this is a great idea actually. I've been looking for some 'scope partners for a few years on here now and have pretty much only found one person so far within an hour and a half of me. We have an astronomy club in the area that doesn't seem to be as active as it use to be. I actually sort of felt like an outcast anyways being the younger fella ( and a newbie at the time ) around folks much older and experienced then I. Also, sometimes I guess I didn't feel the warm welcome.

So, if there are any fellow members in the upstate NY area, get in touch! Thanks much.

Regards,
A CN friend,
Dain

Something else that might work: enlist the help of regional and local clubs and have them host a CN meet and greet night.

These meets could be scheduled on evenings that don't conflict with normal club events. Since many CN members are also Club members this type of cooperation could boost membership all the way around. Meet & Greet nights would differentiate themselves from normal outreach by attracting serious observers while also offer a level of security that most would feel comfortable with. Eventually folks might make arrangements on their own, but the M&G nights could continue to draw beginners and old salts alike.

This could be a regular feature in the beginners or some other thread where meet and greets that have been planned could be announced on a monthly sticky. The host organization could submit an announcement to the moderators who would then place that in a read only sticky. There might be more ideas along this line especially in areas where a club doesn't exist, might even be a way to get one started.
Anyone else have some ideas please share them.
Cheers,

I'd tend to agree with this. I think there's about 6 people in Illinois, and we all live about 5 billion miles away from each other. At the least, I can recommend cruising the Chicago Astronomer website for people around here...

I like this idea. The other forums I'm on (car clubs) have regular weekend-ish meetings where we'll work on each other's cars, hang out, play pool or poker, etc. etc.. I like that since it makes it less like a chat room and more like a local club.

Jim and LLD,

I live in Eastern Mass and would be interested in getting out as well. Will most likely be purchasing a used 10" meade LX200GPS in the very near future. Would love to get out to a dark sky location and do some observing!

HiEveryone, I am new here and new to astronomy and star gazing, I recently bought my first telescope and have been trying to find some star party's to attend in my area, and I found this "scope Buddies" which I think is great, I realized that LLD is only 20 minutes from me in Mass. So hopefully I can get to one soon to observe and talk with other's and learn a few things.
I'm sure I will have plenty of questions and I learn a great deal from your posts.
Thank you.

I have what I guess may be a peculiar take on this, so ... here goes.

I love the "scope buddies" idea and would like to see it formalized somehow. I have a number of reasons for this, some I suppose more selfish than others. :^|

First and foremost: I don't really or can't enjoy big star parties (heck, parties period), since I suffer from something akin to "social anxiety disorder" that makes being in or around even medium-sized groups of people very problematic. And forget crowds!

Please understand, I am making NO judgments of the many people who DO enjoy these events! I'm just talking about my own peculiar makeup which, to perhaps stray towards TMI territory, _has_ occasionally been very depressing/disabling. But I have to recognize and/or admit it.

I find I have a much better time observing with 1-3 friends.

Furthermore, I haven't had a car in over two years now (this is the selfish part) and so if I could find a "scope buddy" in my area who had a good-sized vehicle, it would be really swell. I would be happy to contribute to the gas kitty, of course, and since I can get a Zipcar if I want I could conceivably reciprocate with transportation from time to time.

Bottom line I suppose is that doing stuff alone all the time gets to be a drag, but I'm just not a crowds person. At all.

The edgy aspects of trying to implement this (mentioned several times in the thread above) are very real, too, and are worth thinking about. Some years ago I decided I was tired of playing improv guitar all by myself and that it would be really fun to find someone to improvise _with_ ... and to that end I put an ad up on Craigslist. It wasn't long before I got a response from someone who ... seemed interested, but then he started asking me whether I wanted him to send a picture of himself. I repeatedly told him I didn't care what he looked like ... then decided HE thought I was looking for something other than a guitar playing partner, and gave up.

It's an odd world, and sometimes you don't know whether you're being explicit enough about what the lines are, and what you want, and what is NOT a euphemism for something else!

As far as organizing a Scope Buddies forum, would it make sense to have dedicated threads for each State?

How about a "Scope Buddies" sticky on the "Astro Outreach, Clubs and Star Parties" page? Much like the 2008 Star Parties and Events sticky... except the Months listed would be States listed. CN users that want to observe together could simply list their name and their general geographic location. CN users that want to contact them would have the option of simply sending a PM.

Keeping it as a reference and not an ongoing-let's-talk-about-Bob-and-that-funny-thing-he-did-at-CSSP
would make it easier to navigate.

Since CN already monitors how info is presented, member info, TOS rules, & enforces the TOS; what security measures for protection do you propose for CN to adopt?

Also, I don't believe it's a good idea that a new member is prevented from PMing other members in this particular group, and doubt if it would be possible anyway.

If your suggestions are welcomed by the readers of this thread, you might consider opening your own website for this group, & that way you could enact all the measures you suggested.

CN is for all members, and our TOS, etc. extends to all equally, without creating a special TOS for a specific group.

This thread has merit, but the old saying comes to mind; "buyer beware", in this case, "member beware" when exchanging personal information & meeting publicly.

Possible? Yeah, we could completely scrap and re-write UBB. It would be great.

Probably not a good idea, though.

What a great idea. I currently live in Central Illinois and have become self taught over the last year. I find large crowds sometimes intimidating, along with the issue of not knowing anyone when you show up. Well being planted smack dab in the middle of nowhere doesn't help any either.
A map with pushpins is a good idea along with some means of breaking it all down and making contact with each other.

Another idea would be to change the search engine allowing folks to search the area they are in and see what users are registered in that area. I am not sure if the search will allow you to do that except it will allow you to search on user name though.

I am out here. You will love the skies out here. Less than hour from Las Vegas to extremely dark, clear skies. The next couple of days here will be the first time we have had clouds for weeks. Detailed Milky Way common once you get away from the city skyglow. Keep me posted. Be glad to help when you get here.

Kevin, This sounds like a great Idea. I meet with a friend locally in Vancouver, WA quite often, but usually my days off do not coincide with his. In fact I have to work when the largest star party meeting is happening in Oregon. I will be focusing more camping trips to view dark skies soon. To find others who could do the same would be great. My wife makes it to about 2:00 AM with me but then she folds. I like the diver’s list example. Maybe narrow it down to zones NW, SW, NE, SE or something like that. This is my first post, I joined to find out more info in general i.e. lenses, scopes, F-values and any other thing that might help, but the observing that do with another enthusiast is the best, so that is why I responded to this post.

Lakeland, I was there a month ago it was great.

Anybody going to Clarence Fahnestock Park tomorrow night (Friday, 25 July)? CSC looks good. Moonrise around Midnight. You don't even have to bring a scope. I'm bringing my Teeter's 10" and Orion XT8i for some two-fisted fun!

Ok guys, are we ever going to do anything with this? I think there's been shown enough support that somethings merited. I like the idea of changing the search engine so that you can search for local members. I never thought of that...

Thanks Kevin for supporting the idea I had put in here. If they can change the searche engine you can search by state and or city local. What I thought was great about that is the users who wouldn't feel comfortable with sharing info publicly could always change their location.
