A few weeks ago I posted a link to a Phoenix craigslist ad for a 60mm refractor that some guy got as a gift, and was asking $1000 for a $169 scope. (Well in all fairness, it was $1000 or BEST OFFER.)
There must be something in the air (or water) around here, because here's another fantastic deal...
http://phoenix.craigslist.org/evl/sys/836289643.html
Like the other one, a typo would seem to explain it, thinking maybe he meant a C14, but he's got a separate listing in another category for the same scope, and still claims to have spent $5500 on it.
(I'll save you from having to look it up...this is a $399 scope)

I sent the CL poster an email asking him if it were a typo and also provided a link closest to the description of his ad...too funny!

And then on the other end of the spectrum there's a guy selling his 8" Discovery dob (he claims mirrors are in good shape) with digital setting circles and what looks like two Tele Vue plossls for $300 on Craigs List in the Seattle area.

Im not surprised...Craigs List is perhaps the greatest collection of neewitties on the internet, even making e-bay seem professional by comparison.
I know its the rage, but the few times Ive advertised on Craigs list I get reply after reply asking for my address and other personal info.... yeah right. I guess you get what you pay for with classifieds too, huh?

Looks like a fire sale to me. The mirrors do look decent, but it is hard to tell from the way he photographed them.
If I were up in the SeaTac area, I'd grab this one, if for nothing else but just the EP's!

I've found Craigslist to be a good source of laughs and a good place to find an occasional great deal.
Right now in my area, a gentleman is trying to sell a Dynamax for $1150. (For those who haven't heard of this scope, it's a mediocre SCT from the 70's and early 80's that I believe sold for well below $1000 back then.) Last month I saw a LX10 go for $350.
I still regret not picking up a 6 or 7 year old Nexstar 8 last year for $400. The seller was including the scope, astrophotography gear and camera, eyepieces, filters, and carrying cases. I met with him, but the CFO only approved the purchase of his Series 4000 6.7mm UWA. I am now trying to save up for a new Nexstar 8. I recently told my CFO: "I wish I would have got that scope last year, the new one I'm trying to get is $1400." She said: "Yeah, you should have gotten it."
Craigslist...it's always interesting.
Clear skies,
Jeff

Not exactly the same....
The old Dynamax is considered a COLLECTIBLE today. I've seen old Dynamax's and Criterions selling for well over $1100...

Has Televue ever made a 10mm plossl? Just looked at their website and they don't list any now. Although the whole thing might be worth a look-see if it's still available.

Have sold some furniture on Craigslist lately, it can work well if you are careful. You need to know what you are buying, the perfect example of caveat emptor. Every now and then I type 'telescope' in to the search field and see what is selling locally. A lot of junk at cheap prices and the occasional laugh when you see an overpriced piece of junk.
There is the occasional decent deal, somebody has been trying to sell an old Odyssy 12" down in Kona for a while, the price is about what the mirror is worth (if any good). I have been considering making a 12" ultra portable dob, I wonder if they are ready to accept an offer...

I use Craigs List to sell old 68-72 Chevelle parts that I accumulated over the years...Stuff is too big, too bulky, etc to ship....So I need a local buyer.... works great..as far as I am concerned...

The best deal I ever got on a scope was on craigs list. The seller was moving and had to sell. Most of the stuff is like what Rocco13 was showing, but if you know your stuff and keep an eye out, you can catch a good deal every once in awhile.

I picked up a nearly new ETX 90 with Autostar controller for $300 a few years back on craigslist. Thought that was a pretty good deal. Still have that scope and use it quite a bit.

I've only had one experience with Craig's list and it was a favorable one. Bought a 10 yr old Celestron 80mm refractor with a EQ1 type tripod for $100. Looked like the day it was made and was a very nice introduction to refractors. Convinced me to buy some ED scopes.

I went to Craig's List for Fort Lauderdale just to see what they might have here. Found one of your Craig's List Wonders! Celestron NexStar GPS 11' Telescope - $24000 (Ft. Lauderdale) Not sure if there is just an extra zero or what? One problem I see with Craig's is there is no catagory for Astronomy so the stuff is all over the place.

How about the 8" Dynamax SCT behind me in my SIG picture-- I sold it last year for $250 --- with the promise that the scope would be kept always as one unit. It included the "famous" Gold Pyramid tripod and table legs and the 12volt RA control-- the scope needed a little work on the RA gears-- but was otherwise in good shape. It was originally housed in the Black Forest Observatory in Colorado --- Van Slyke verified its history. http://www.observatory.org/30tele.htm
The scope had fairly good optics -- not as bad as what you hear.
