Unusual habits of the amateur astronomer.
      #5455882 - 10/04/12 10:49 PM

Having been in the hobby for 30 odd years, I've found that I have acquired a few unusual habits that others who don't know me well might find odd. For instance, when walking out of a building I find that I'll often catch myself looking up, even if just for a moment, regardless of the time of day or weather conditions. I also appear to have an OCD like condition for satellite and radar loops. I've even gone so far as to make a personal web page with all my favorite weather imagery so I no longer have to switch between multiple websites. Of course, I can't seem to go without checking CN multiple times during the day too!

I'd like to know more about your weather imagery. I usually check the ir on the Gulf of Mexico. Plus the local dobbler for Florida. What else to you look at?

I tend to check the clear sky clock at lunch (gotta take advantage of your opportunities in Seattle), although I have gotten out of this habit the last three months. I also have a lunar phase indicator on my watch so I can quickly decide whether it would be worthwhile to drive to dark skies.

At least it's not snowing there! Today, Friday, October 5, 2012, and it's snowing pretty good.

Each time I stop at a traffic junction whilst driving back, I tend to look up even though I know its gonna rain.

Has anyone else woke up in the middle of the night, and decided to peek outside before going back to sleep?

Dan,

Nice Wx page, I like it!

I use binoculars at work when on breaks to show people sunspots with the projection technique. I do this all the time. I show people stuff on the night shift too. The Venus transit was a great time with some of my coworkers.

It's even rubbed off on my wife who almost never observes with me. She says she looks at the sky much more than she used to.

All the time. And the older you get, the more times you have to wake up in the middle of the night...

Well yes. Yes I do. Practically every night.

Now... How many of you have ever ended up observing in you robe n slipper after dragging a scope out at 3 AM?

It was almost the uniform of the day at the end of this summer when Jupiter and Company were just rising.
