Finders / Guiders For Binos?
      #1097725 - 08/16/06 02:13 PM

What do you use for a Finder / Guider for your Bino?
How do you mount these with your bino?
Any one using a "C" bracket?
Any photos of these mounts and guiders with your binos?

Even with my 20x80s with their 3.5 degree TFOV, I've never found a need for a separate finder. Took a few weeks of getting used to the weight and balance, but now I can point them accurately.

When I first bought these, on the very first night out, I tended to under-shoot the target, so while I was aiming at Jupiter for first light, I landed right on M4. Quite bright and partially resolved, so quite worthy of a first light.

Anybody want to figure out the year from Jupiter being right above M4 ?

Since 1950.... twice in each year of 1983 and 1995. Closest they got was 5.3 degrees.

Cheers,

Well done Rick; it was July 1995.

I got a pair of 25x100 Obies last month and I feel a certain need for some type of finder scope. The 2.5-degree field makes things a little interesting, but as a longtime-Dobsonian owner, star-hopping isn't too bad. I've given thought to maybe a Telrad or red-dot finder at some point.

I affixed mine using two way tape. It's a Stellarvue standard RDF. It's very useful for starhopping.

I like it mounted low on the prism housing, so I don't have to raise my head much from the eyepieces.

Mike,

That is a nice setup How much time is involved in securing and aiming the finder?

It took me about 2 minutes to put the finder on the bino and another ~5 minutes to align it. I rarely have to adjust it. On occasion it may require a momentary tweak to get it dead on.

That's my old Tiffen Magnum tripod, now relegated to use with the 15x70 Skymaster since the arrival of my p-mount. It's for the better anyway since the head was overloaded with a 10# binocular on it.

      #1098610 - 08/16/06 11:34 PM Attachment (45 downloads)

Here's a closeup of the finder on my 25x100 Garretts. The attachment took a bit of trial and error - a hole drilled in a block of wood the same diameter as the central binocular brace; cut the block longitudinally bisecting the hole and leaving a semi-circular opening; glue the block to the center bino brace with silicon adhesive; screw the mount base to the block; attach the Burgess Optical finder to the mount base and align. Took about half a day. But it's way worth it - see my comments in the CN review of the Garrett's here.

After experimenting around with a lot of different finders, I've not found anything that works as well as a Green laser. Of course, I usually observe alone and my nearest neighbor is well over a mile away, so I don't have to worry disrupting anyone else's viewing. The main advantage is that it's so quick. Photo shows one on my 25x100IF's, and I also mounted this samer laser on my Saturn III's.

Great ideas and photos !!!
Keep'm coming folks.....

Along with the photos, I think the greatest help for everyone is also a short description of how you mounted your finder/guider. There aren't too many places on binoculars for attachments.

Rushintuit -- thanks for the great idea and the link to the "C" mount. I think that mount is the sort of thing some of the more skilled folks can make too. All kinds of finders and guiders can go on that type of mount.

Unfortunatley, since I'm near the top of the "unskilled-handiman" list, I'd have to buy it.

CESDewar -- the laser idea looks great too -- what is the mount made from -- plastic tube?

I like Oberwerk products, but when I saw that "C" finder, I cringed just a bit. Thanks, but I wouldn't trust my binoculars mounted to a bracket that is dependant on a single screw to hold the upright to the base. Either make it milled out of one piece or weld it.

Personally, the only time I use a finder is when I'm using the BT100 at high power, 44x +. I use a Stellervue red Dot. The dovetail is mounted to the top of the BT. The Red dot slides on and locks in about 10 seconds and has always been aligned.

I find that a 20x80 binocular is similar to a finder.

Regarding the C adapter, the upright section fits snugly into a milled area on the base, and all parts are 3/8" aluminum. Very strong. We've been selling these for 6 years, with no failures that I know of.

I've not found a need for one with my 16X70s, but I use a Stellarvue Red Dot with my 25X100s. The housing around the objectives is a tube, therefore I can just attach it with rubber bands. (1 or 2 would probably suffice, but I use 3.) The curvature of the tube means that it automatically lines up with the binos. Set-up takes about 10 seconds.

Mike and Bill,

WOW. Sometimes the simplest solutions are the best. I have to try that with my Obies. I've got plenty of two-sided tape and rubber bands and an additional 10 seconds to spare! These binoculars are great but the 2.5-degree field makes for a few interesting star hops through the more barren star fields without some type of finder.

Clear Skies,
Phil

Hello Bill Hunt,

Thanks for the terrific five-cent tip about the finder/guider on your big binoculars. I see one reader is going to try it.

Share your ideas and improve astronomy and your observing.

The tube that holds the laser and provides for alignment is a stock item from ScopeStuff and has a standard 1/4-20 thread. I then just used a pipe clamp to clamp it to the main rail on the binos.

Hi CESDewar,

Thanks for the info. There's another little home made trick to attach things to binos without drilling holes. Way to go.
Bino folks may just be just as inventive as the scope folks...

Art:

I have a WO red dot finder and have ordered another, since I have multiple scopes. I just received my Stellarvue 20x85s and will be posting a first light report. These are very bright, dynomite binos, I must say! But I must discuss with you a better mounting setup. I will not enjoy these using just a tripod. In any case, I like your idea regarding the red dot finder and will adapt mine for use on the big binos.

Daryl
