Great idea. What are elbow rests made of and what did you use to attach them?

mike i cut up a old metal lawn chair and fasten them on the bolts on the side and used foam for the elbow rest, but you can also drill a hole in the arm rest and use wood blocks about 6" long and use soft padding for the ends. john

Interesting concept - is there any way of attaching some form of 'A' frame, say made from light aluminium, to the arm rests and then attaching the binos to that ? Just a thought.

John -
WOW.
Have you ever written article about that beast? I'd be interested to learn more about it - how it was built, what parts you used, and how it performs.
Is that an old porro-binocular body attached to the focuser? And what kind of eyepieces are those?
I had no idea you were such a binocular surgeon! Or should I say, mad scientist!

Mike for the back i took apart a ex.wide angle binocular with large bak4 prisms and attached 2" barrels and 1 1/4" eyepiece holders.for the eyepieces i made from the Oberwerk 25/40x100mm using there 24mm eyepiece which has about a 70 to 72 degree field without having any vignetting.but i can use any eyepiece.

Wow, John, that is an impressive beast. Can the IPD can be adjusted or is it fixed at your setting?
Have you ever taken that thing out under some really dark skies? Twin 120mm lenses must really bring in those faint extended objects. Using those 24mm Obie eyepieces, what magnification and FOV do you get? (Sorry, I am a dunce when it comes to figgering out the numbers)
Perhaps you should consider writing up some kind of article or guide for others who would seek to construct such an instrument. Did you have an inspiration or specific plans at the beginning, or did you put this together from something in your head?

Mike the IPD can be adjusted and the power comes out about 25 power with the 24mm eyepieces, with 32mm eyepieces about 19 power. focal length of OTA is 600mm.later on I'm going to update the binocular body's with newer ones with MC prisms if i can find large enough ones. regards john

Yeah, I didn't mean to sidetrack the thread, but I could not pass up commenting on that binocular behemoth. I am quite fascinated by such instruments.
And is that a BIN FULL OF BINOCULARS I see on the ground? It looks like John could open his own bino-astronomy store. That's an enviable collection of optics you have there John. I wonder if the gnomes come out at night and observe with them while you sleep?

How far 'back' can you go towards zenith without being to uncomfortable or unsafe ? [Tipping back over would not be good!]
