For several years I have enjoyed collecting vintage binoculars. The collection of 43 mostly vintage binoculars can be viewed at:

I would appreciate any comments, further information or corrections the members of this forum could provide about these binoculars and my descriptions of them. In particular, as detailed at this site I have specific questions about the following binoculars:

Awesome!
You've got binoculars historically important.
I am particularly impressed by Rodenstock DF 03 6x24 and the restoration of the Zeiss 6x24, but many others are spectacular.
I do not have space at home to other bincoli and am making changes and sales of equipment to increase my chances, I tell you this thing because I like to have some model of those binoculars Navy Ross English which are quite large (you have many of them).
Today .. I could not even make take hold.
My wife would put me out of the house ... and with this cold ... brrrrr

Simon, I've just been looking at your flickr page and see you've had over 10,000 views. This is amazing. I have a question for you about your description of the Barr & Stroud CF 41. You state it has a "crystal ball effect". What is this, and what would be the cause?

No surprise a great many of the British binoculars were acquired via British sellers, but I have acquired several in Canada, one from Manitoba and two from British Columbia. All three have pristine unmarked optics. It seems to me that in Canada, for some reason, more vintage binoculars come up for sale out of BC than any other province although Ontario would be a close 2nd.

I would bet that its the "rolling ball effect" by anther name. When straight lines near the outside bend inward at top and bottom. It happens when you don't have any pincushion, IIRC.
Nice collection FrankL. I have a tasco #118. It is pretty good but I like the Jason Statesman 7x35 EWA better.
What do you think of the Nikon A series, compared to contemporaries, or more recent Nikons.

I think you're correct about the rolling ball effect caused by barrel distortion. I was just looking at Fan Tao's site:
http://binofan.home.att.net/lem7x50.htm
and he likens this distortion to looking through a ball or globe.
Regarding Nikon A series compared to later Nikons: 1) All are of excellent build quality. Possibly the prisms in the EII and SE series are more securely fastened but I've have never disassembled any to find out. 2) I think most of the A series glasses have wider FOV's which I like. 3) The greenish coatings introduced on later E series glasses are far superior to the purplish A series coatings although these are quite good compared to other similarly coated binoculars of the period. 4) I absolutely love the soft rubber eyecups on the later Nikons. Fortunately, I don't wear glasses. 5) I have read that the 7X35 J-B7 was the best of the series but have never had one and can't comment. I have, however, had two of the 9X35 J-B7's, and this one seems to me to be the weak sister, just not having quite the sharpness of image in center of field found on all their other glasses of any series.

I really like the telemetric device. Very simple but it took a while to discover how it worked. I'm not sure why it would have been preferable to a graticule other than it may have been less costly to manufacture.
