Last Thursday the Giant Fujis arrived after a long month of shipping, US clearance, shipping to Colombia, etc.... Fortunately everything arrived in perfect condition which made all the waiting (and worrying) worth. Unfortunately, as with appears to happen with all new optics, weather is not contributing to any astronomical observation, but I'll be into it as soon as the clouds move over Physically, the 25x150 and the 40x150 are almost exact, except for the 40x being 1.5cm shorter due to shorter eps. Both have the same fast focus (meed less than a full ep turn to focus near to infinity), but the 40x is even faster (less turn distance from diopters). The original mount (pedestal and tripod) is excellently built and steady as a rock, but is better suited for terrestrial observation. Since it was a whole package deal, I dont care much, but I'll be buying another Sirius P-mount unless Santa comes early whit a Starchair 3000 The binoculars are surprisingly easy to setup, a one man job. You only need another hand to carry the binoculars in their original case around. What a nice case! this one sure will not wear out easily or loose a handle, but at a U$1000 it is very expensive; if it where not included in the deal I would certainly had not buy it separately. Now the optics. Very sharp! but no so different than the 25MT's. A bit of color is shown in some objects, but definitely less than in the MTs. Not 100% apos, but the ED correction is very important at this magnification, maybe that is the reason a 40x MT doesn't exist. Their eye relief is shorter so I have to press my eyes to the eps to get the full FOV, but if I remove the winged style eyecups then it is far more comfortable. It is just a nose issue. At this magnification, heat waves are more noticeable, so it makes detailed observation a bit harder at noon than at evening (beyond 3 or 4pm) on sunny days. In terrestrial viewing, the 40x is sharp at least to 95% of the Fov, but this is a subjective estimation; star testing will tell more accurate readings in sharpness. On Saturday night I had tree 10 to 15 minutes intervals of clear patches in the sky. Unfortunately, clouds get illumination from the city (Bogotá) so they act similarly as observing with a full moon, but where good enough to notice some things. In the 25x, very dim stars appeared barely visible in the limits of their magnitude capacity (at the time, clearly diminished for the weather and illumination conditions..) When looking at the same target at 40x, those stars where considerably more clear (contrast), and others (not much and only in the 40% center), dimmer, appeared. This small test made me realize the investment was worth, since what I desire the most is to get a bit more detail of some DSO's, specially galaxies and dark dust over bright nebula. Will I be able to see another component (E) of the trapezium??? who knows... will have to wait some months until Orion appears again... For the record, since EDJ mentioned the horse head nebula, I've observed it (barely) only twice under good conditions with the 25x150MT's, and at the same time I wasn't able to see it with the Chinese 150's, not at 25x, and barely at 39.5x, Fujinon Rocks!! Is to be noted that 1.7º, different from what I thought first, are difficult to handle and this monsters do need a Telrad or similar, no wonder why Gordon R mentioned that this 40x was not used in fishing, 2.7º better for that purpose. For now, I can conclude that the way I use them those two giants complement each other; the 25x for rich wide fields and the 40x to get more detail of some of my preferred DSO's, so I'm keeping both, specially because that way it is also easier and enjoyable to share views with the friends I observe. My other preferred binocular that I use as a finder, is the 10x42EL Swarovski, a perfect companion for the big Fujis; Those, a coupe friends, a comfortable chair and hot chocolate (or some shots of brandy) and we are ready to go! Will post more stellar impressions as soon a weather permits. Now, some pictures of the Fujis

Andresin150...
Your reports on the Fujinon 40x150 are the best I have seen on this forum, except for the reports of EdZ.
Please keep them coming.
Here are a few terrestrial questions. Q1: What is the close focus of the Fujinon 25x150 and 40x150?
Q2: Is there any difference in fog or haze penetration between the 25x150MT and 40x150ED?
Q3: How do the two models perform in viewing objects in full shade? When night sky viewing: Q4: Can you give us some comparisons of the two models with the 22x85 and 28x110?

What a great set of instruments to observe with!
The third pic with the swaros straddling the back of the fujis gives a good impression of the solidity and build quality of the fujis - a true heirloom quality bino!
I hope to read many observing reports of southern hemisphere objects from you!
Enjoy

what is the highest angle you can get with the fuji mount? -I always believed that it was okay for astronomy, just the p-mount was better?
with my UA Sirius P-mount, I can probably get to 90, but over 75-80 degrees is unconfortable

Mr. Jones: Why is the p -mount uncomfortable at 90 deg? It seems that with a reclining chair such as the LaFama or its clones, one might go beyond 90 deg, perhaps with the aid of a cushion under the small of the back?
Re 40 x 150 and fishing: I recall that a high ranking Fujinon sales executive once mentioned that there was (is?) a Korean tuna seiner which had a 40 x 150.
I was in Bogota once , in May, but only in the city. It seemed rather variably cloudy in the day, and I did not try any night looks, because I was inside the city lights region. Later, on buses south to San Agustin and the Ecuador border, birdwatching and delicious, novel tropical fruits and milkshakes made from them are dominant memories. As well as two condors near the bus in high winds, above a river valley, east of Popayan. The driver stopped the bus.
I knew that clouds would interfere with astronomy, at least intermittently , until I left the tropics, though I peered out of the bus for what I hoped would be a first look at the Magellan clouds . It is not until one passes into Peru, with the cold Humboldt current that the (meteorological) clouds reliably diminish , at least away from the coastal seasonal fog.I was in Peru during the dry season, in the usual tourist places ( and some more adventurous places east of Cuzco). I went as far as Potosi in Bolivia, but not into Chile. I had a WW II 9 x 63 and a little folding Zeiss 8 x 20. In September or October , returning north, it was not cloudy on the Caribbean coast, but I do not recall any astronomy. More tropical rhythms, tropical fruits, sand beaches, Howler monkeys, Colombia Army antidrug and/or counterinsurgency checkpoints "What is your mission?"(backpack, binoculars). I went east of Santa Marta, into the Tayrona cultural zone, but did not go up to the semisacred sites (nor did I catch malaria).
I wonder if the semi-public astronomy clubs near La Serena, near the big observatories in Chile, have large binoculars? I took a Google Earth trip up the Elqui Valley from La Serena to Cerro Tololo.

It's a pity one couldn't permanently attach the Swarovski - it would make a very nice finder instrument .

I think the 10x42 and the 40x150 are getting a little too friendly there. If they breed, you will have yourself a bunch of illegitimate (the b word got censored!) 20x80s.
