Well, my IPDs 67mm and I have a narrow nose bridge. The eye relief is tight and as a result, I could JUST fit my face into the binoculars.

Bill T has the binos, let's ask him to measure the ep barrels OD.
I recall about 1 3/4 inches, but its been a while since I had them.

They're big. 57mm across (2.25 inches). When the IPD is closed up all the way, there is only a mm or two between them.

Well, my 13mm Ethoi have 62mm barrels, but they do have some degree of tapering at the top 20mm, where the diameter drops to a 43.5mm lip which holds the rubber eye guards (removed.) even though my IPD is 67mm (like Mr. Bill's), I did have to remove the eye guards so as to enjoy the full 100 deg. field without having to push kind of hard against them.

Does the Fuji's eyepieces have some amount of taper at the back end? How large is the eye relief? The oculars must have a focal length in the 30mm range.

BigBinocular lists the eye relief at 18.6mm, but the USABLE eye relief is considerably less. I had to jam the eye guards into my eye sockets to see the full fov.

In fact, I bought a second set of eyeguards and modified them to fit my face better.

One hint I'll pass along. I was very worried about possible customs charges when bringing these big boys into the US. I did some research and apparently there is no import duty on binoculars and binoculars mounting equipment. I have no idea why not.

I had Toni prominently mark the contents as binoculars and binocular mount (rather than something like "optics") and sure enough they flew though customs without a problem. Given that customs fees can be anywhere from 3%-8%, that saved a chunk of money.

There is no binocular manufacturing in the U.S. The customs fees are usually to protect national industries. As is always the case follow the dollar.

Beautiful bins. I wish i had had the courage to order them from Columbia.

Yes, 30mm f.l. eyepieces , because: Objective F/ratio is known to be F/5, by specifications in older advertising, and by measurement (by me). 5 times 150mm = 750mm. 750mm divided by 25 = 30mm.

The Fuji 15 x 80 has much more eye relief. Its objectives are something like f/6. It would take me a while to find my measurement notes. The US Coast Guard use that one. Some 25 x 150 also. 15 x 80 on a controversial Japanese "research" whaling boat about to fire/just fired its harpoon, are shown in older 15 x 80 advertising .

" No binocular manufacturing in the US ". Very little, but not zero:

The Fraser-Volpe gyro stabilized handhelds .

The ITT night vison binoculars.

The small, occasional contracts for the 20 x 120 shipboard binoculars on US Navy ships.

The Kamakura assembly of Japanese, probably Sino-Japanese parts , with enough labor as value added to qualify for certain government contracts.

Are there others?

My IPD is 64mm. I find them very comfortable. If I remove the eye cups then I experience some blackouts. Of course, a thinner design of those eye cups would be better.
In the 40x is different. To observe comfortably I have to remove the eye cups. I can observe the full FOV with the eye cups on, but I have to press my eyes against the binoculars too much. The real drawback of this situation is that without the eye cups the EPs are too cold. This could be annoying in some particularly cold nights.
FYI, the outside diameter of both 25x and 40x eps is the same (and use the same original eye cups, and the same original filters).
Also, if you can use any of them with the eye cups on, you'll notice their benefits by blocking lateral light.

No Glenn, the Fuji Eps are flat, no tapering. If those had some tapering they would be more comfortable since I consider that their eye relief is sufficient.

I made Delrin or Celcon pushrings(the part of the eyepiece exterior which is closest to the nose) to substitute for the original aluminum, In the early -middle of the 1970s , the Fuji Meibo 25 x 150 with trunnions, which I call Fuji I, had brass focusing rings and aluminum pushrings , separated by a thin Delrin , PE, or Nylon washer for antifriction and at least some insulation between the brass and the aluminum. But saltwater provided a conductor which corroded away the bottom of the perimeter of the aluminum pushring , from galvanic action between the brass and the (sacrificial) aluminum.

My Delrin pushrings, with 0.5mm thread pitch ( about 50 threads per inch), stopped the galvanic corrosion there, and provided a more comfortable surface if the nose should happen to touch there on a cold night.

I have not made any of those for the current models. As I recall, the thread pitch is greater for those, so the ones which I made for the Fuji I would not fit.

One might make a simple unthreaded replacement Delrin pushring, to be held by radial nylon headless setscrews/grubscrews, to serve as a nose insulator and eyerelief spacer. The diameter of such a pushring could be less than the grooved (for the unsatisfactory factory supplied eyecups) pushring, thus providing more noserelief.

The WW II Navy rangefinder Lone Ranger style 2-hole rubber masks must be stretched to fit the 25 x 150 I or II, and do not allow me ( 65mm IPD, "normal" Northwestern-European- Caucasian nose and face) to view the entire field of view, without pressing , of the Fuji I or II, nor that of the Nikon 20 x 120 I or II (for which I also made anticorrosion rings. Those are smaller than the Nikon brass originals, so provide more nose relief ).

Might a scuba or snorkel swimming/diving mask be adapted as an eye-relief spacer, light shield, and wind shield ?

I finally got all the pieces together and the binoculars saw first light last night. It was not a particularly good night as there were clouds and a first quarter Moon.

The optics seemed to have survived the shipping and were well collimated. Briefly looked at the Moon, M13, M92, M81, M82, and Saturn. With my glasses on I see 2.5º of the supposed 2.7º FOV. That is very reasonable to me. Even pulling my glasses off I'm not sure I could see much more.

I can't wait for some moonless skies at a dark site. June 13th-18th is the Rocky Mountain Star Stare, the largest star party in Colorado. I will have them there to put them through their paces.

Very nice... I decided against the big Fuji's for the very reason pictured: the giant tripod and P-mount needed. Im very envious.
Good luck!!!

So, what would you estimate the overall weight to be?

I would guess ~160 lbs.

It is not exactly grab and go, but it is not worse (and in someways better) than my TEC 180 refractor on an NJP mount. I transport that to star parties also.

Congratulations Bill! Did you order the winged eyecups? IIRC this pair didn't have it. Those are very good at blocking stray light, so you may want them.

Bill,

Although there is no sign of them in that photo, for that amount of outlay, one can only assume that a neck strap and lens cleaning cloth WERE included in the package? :-)

Kenny
