Main theme from the Carl Sagan series...'Cosmos'. This is a piece by Vangelis entitled "Heaven & Hell"!!! A lot of Vangelis' work is similar...remember the theme from "Chariots of Fire"??? Holst's "The Planets" is my favorite album to observe by!!...and believe it or not, I enjoy some of the more "mellow" stuff by The Moody Blues!!! That and a pot of hot coffee......PRICELESS!!!

I remembered the old Star Trek theme, But back in the late 60's It was the Oliver version of Hair's "Good Morning Starshine" that was on the pop stations back then. I had a 3" Newtonian from Monkey Wards and was listening to my 5-tube clock radio I had out in the late summer mornings, splitting the trapezium before school started for the season. IT FIT! BTW it was old KIMN radio, Denver. Joe.

Yup it was a great show for me as a youngster (early 1960's), but I prefer the original version of the song that closed the TV show:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nXGGuqXB8h4&feature=related
The lyrics start:
I wish I was a space man.
The fastest guy alive.
I'd fly you round the universe,
In Fireball XL-5......
Oh, and in case someone wonders how big the XL ships were, here is the 'flyable' version of XL-5 (well, the texture label says it's XL-10) on hover moving past the Vehicle Assembly Building (from the space flight simulator ORBITER, note the size of the shadow of XL-5 on the ground):

Not strictly 'space' songs, but some movements from Beethoven's late piano sonatas are quite transcendental and profoundly other-worldly, and of course there's his 'Moonlight' sonata.

"Big Bad Moon" by Joe Satriani. He also made an album with the very important question "Is there Love in Space?" as its title.
"Workshop of the Telescopes" and "Astronomy" by Blue Öyster Cult (note: the latter is *not* by Metallica)
"2112" by Rush (and various other songs with some hints on astronomy here and there)
"The observer" by Haggard (the whole album is dedicated to Galileo Galilei. Haggard is a crowd of two dozens musicians from Munich, Germany. They combine medieval instruments and tunes with slightly more modern metal elements. Check it out on youTube!)
"Hello Spaceboy" by Pagan's Mind (composed by David Bowie)
"Another Moon Song" by Wolfhound (German bassist Wolfgang Schmid's band during the late 80ies)
"Under a Glass Moon" by Dream Theater. Beware of not knowing Dream Theater ;-)
Enjoy! Tom

Well, the only thing Rush and Dream Theater really have in common is the "progressive" tag. I count both bands among my favorites. Rush is more melodic, easier to listen and they really groove! Rush never released a weak album.
Dream Theater has IMO released at least one weak album (Falling into Infinity). But what they show on the "Score" DVD is fantastic: the "Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence", accompanied by an orchestra is definitely a masterpiece that will stand the test of time. They are not the first rock band to play with an orchestra, but "Score" is the first time where this truely worked. And James LaBrie is the better singer ;-)

Without Question
Dark Star by the Grateful Dead
Dark star crashes, pouring its light into ashes. Reason tatters, the forces tear loose from the axis. Searchlight casting for faults in the clouds of delusion. Shall we go, you and I while we can Through the transitive nightfall of diamonds?
Mirror shatters in formless reflections of matter. Glass hand dissolving to ice petal flowers revolving. Lady in velvet recedes in the nights of good-bye. Shall we go, you and I while we can Through the transitive nightfall of diamonds?

"Natural Science" by Rush
[1. Tide Pools]
When the ebbing tide retreats Along the rocky shoreline It leaves a trail of tidal pools In a short-lived galaxy Each microcosmic planet A complete society
A simple kind mirror To reflect upon our own All the busy little creatures Chasing out their destinies Living in their pools They soon forget about the sea...
Wheels within wheels In a spiral array A pattern so grand And complex Time after time We lose sight of the way Our causes cant see Their effects
[2. Hyperspace]
A quantum leap forward In time and in space The universe learned to expand
The mess and the magic Triumphant and tragic A mechanized world, out of hand
Computerized clinic For superior cynics Who dance to a synthetic band
In their own image Their world is fashioned --- No wonder they dont understand
Wheels within wheels In a spiral array A pattern so grand And complex Time after time We lose sight of the way Our causes cant see Their effects
[3. Permanent Waves]
Science, like nature Must also be tamed With a view towards its preservation Given the same State of integrity It will surely serve us well
Art as expression --- Not as market campaigns Will still capture our imaginations Given the same State of integrity It will surely help us along
The most endangered species --- The honest man Will still survive annihilation Forming a world --- State of integrity Sensitive, open, and strong
Wave after wave Will flow with the tide And bury the world as it does Tide after tide Will flow and recede Leaving life to go on As it was...

These are great posts! I will have to track some of them down.

In particular, I like the piece, "Sleeping Astronauts" done for "Journey to the Far Side of the Sun". I have that one programmed into the space flight simulator ORBITER for background music during orbital external views. Clear skies to you.

Astronomy Domine off of Pink Floyd's Ummagumma-best version ever.
Also, Echoes was originally written with lyrics about the planets; rumor was that the song was composed to be the final sequence for 2001. Syncs up well when you cue "jupiter and beyond" on the DVD (though this guy who synced the two started the music too late): http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-8747282288684360296

Has anyone mentioned Sun Ra on this thread? If not, they should have. That man was in space BEFORE Yuri Gagarin and Alan Shepard.

Would it be lunacy to add Moon River to this list? It's a stretch but very beautiful...
Moon River, wider than a mile, I'm crossing you in style some day. Oh, dream maker, you heart breaker, wherever you're going I'm going your way. Two drifters off to see the world. There's such a lot of world to see. We're after the same rainbow's end-- waiting 'round the bend, my huckleberry friend, Moon River and me.

What a cool thread! Thanks for all the suggestions. Here are some of my listening favorites while observing (it helps keep the sounds of the woodland animals from bothering me): Over the Edge and The Puzzling Evidence Show Great background if you're listening to headphones, very experimental protopod.org Another experimental music/talk podcast Brian Eno - Music for Airports Very relaxing ambient music Symphonies of the Planets recorded by two automated NASA probes — and all the music itself was produced by the planets and moons of our solar systems Music from the Hearts of Space Slow music for fast times, very cool space music

"Workshop of the Telescopes" and "Astronomy" by Blue Öyster Cult (note: the latter is *not* by Metallica)
Yeah. We know. But Metallica's version's better.
Starlight, Knights of Cydonia and Supermassive Black Hole by UK rock band Muse are good songs with a space vibe. These are on the CD Black Holes and Revelations but their other albums also have a good space/sf feel to them.
I think I mentioned them on another thread but the Canadian rock band Voivod's entire album Dimension Hatross is space themed and they also did an excellent cover of Pink Floyd's Astronomy Domine.
Also, the aforementioned Metallica's instrumental tracks Orion, and Call of Ktulu have a space vibe to them. I don't know if Messrs Hetfield, Ulrich, Hammett and Burton had the mighty constellation in mind, or something else entirely, when they wrote Orion but it fits a space theme perfectly.

Here are a few more worthy space songs that haven't been mentioned: the Church's "Under The Milky Way", Shawn Colvin's "Orion In The Sky", CSN's "Southern Cross", the Hoodoo Gurus' "Mars Needs Guitars", Lou Reed's "Satellite of Love", and the Stones' "2000 Light Years From Home".

I have another, and I've modified the lyrics. Though the original doesn't mention anything about astronomy, some of the words are appropriate when one goes gazing . . .
Hungry like the Wolf Duran Duran
Modified (please feel free to do your own words and improve my meek and lowly attempt) while going after that object you just can't seem to bag:
"In touch with the sky
I'm on the hunt I'm after you
Frustrated and mad, I'm lost in the glow
And I'm hungry like the wolf
Straddle the tube, in discord and rhyme
I'm on the hunt I'm after you
Brain is alive with juices like wine
And I'm hungry like the wolf

Deep out of the past on Duran Duran, words fit. Here's a country song on Light Pollution or how some may feel about their neighbors when observing at home (had a neighbor like this once):

I like Ulrich Schnauss's song "Stars", anything by Project Skyward, Steve Roach's song "Something in the Tears" has a beautiful, spacey sound to it... perfect for listening to while star gazing.
