A Couple of New Lunar Atlases/Guides Coming Soon
      #3217770 - 07/14/09 02:58 PM

Hi all,

I pre-ordered this book, The Six-Inch Lunar Atlas: A Pocket Field Guide, in January (publish and ship date in June) and received an update or revision on June 5th saying that a further delay has occurred. No problem I think, with the shortage of lunar atlases/guides these days I can wait a long time. So the next hopeful ship date is/was July 14th which has come and gone and no update/revision yet. So maybe just maybe Amazon will ship it soon. <fingers crossed>

While I was looking around yesterday for an update from the publisher, Springer, my heart sunk as I looked at the info page on the site and noticed that the publish date was set for August 14th. Dang it! I have since rechecked this and there is an estimated delivery date of July 21, 2009 - July 27, 2009.

Anyone get a revision or checked the status of their order from Amazon?

There is some good news though, I did stumble on something of note at Springer, another lunar observing book titled, Moonwalk with Your Eyes: A Pocket Field Guide. The info page has some enticing features mentioned like, Imagine yourself at the telescope "crater hopping" to new challenges and being able to instantly identify Moon features. and Charts will help guide you to specific lunar features, as well as annotated photographic maps that pinpoint important or unusual craters. I pre-ordered it from Amazon today with a publish date of October 2009. Hope it's worth the wait.

peace & clear skies,

I did get a revision notice on my order of the "Six-Inch Lunar Atlas" from Amazon. I got it yesterday (Mon 7/13). They wanted to know if I still wanted to wait or cancel my order. They could not give me any estimated shipping date!! I decided to keep waiting for the book...should be cool and I'm in no particular hurry to get it!!

P.S. This is what they said....Still want it? We'll keep on trying. To keep your order for this item open,
please click the link below. Otherwise, we'll cancel your order on August 12
2009, if we haven't located it by then.

Hi Robert,

So far no shipping notice or revision notice for me. Mind if I ask when did you ordered the book? I ordered in Jan 2009. I am hoping they got a shipment and can ship mine soon. But like I said I will wait for it as long as I have to wait.

Several days ago the Scientific American Book Club had the 6" Lunar Atlas listed in the 'coming soon' section as printing in July and available mid August. They have since removed it from the site. It sounds interesting especially if it can be opened flat for use at the scope.

Why don't you guys just bag this one and get a copy of "Moon, Mars, and Venus" by Rukl? That's about 6" tall, contains Rukl's entire lunar atlas, plus a very servicable Mars map, and only costs about $15 used. It lives in my accessory case, and I'm never without it.

Hi Rick,

I have a few copies of MMV and Atlas of the Moon, I believe you can never have too many Moon atlases!
