Hi all,
I pre-ordered this book, The Six-Inch Lunar Atlas: A Pocket Field Guide, in January (publish and ship date in June) and received an update or revision on June 5th saying that a further delay has occurred. No problem I think, with the shortage of lunar atlases/guides these days I can wait a long time. So the next hopeful ship date is/was July 14th which has come and gone and no update/revision yet. So maybe just maybe Amazon will ship it soon. <fingers crossed>
While I was looking around yesterday for an update from the publisher, Springer, my heart sunk as I looked at the info page on the site and noticed that the publish date was set for August 14th. Dang it! I have since rechecked this and there is an estimated delivery date of July 21, 2009 - July 27, 2009.
Anyone get a revision or checked the status of their order from Amazon?
There is some good news though, I did stumble on something of note at Springer, another lunar observing book titled, Moonwalk with Your Eyes: A Pocket Field Guide. The info page has some enticing features mentioned like, Imagine yourself at the telescope "crater hopping" to new challenges and being able to instantly identify Moon features. and Charts will help guide you to specific lunar features, as well as annotated photographic maps that pinpoint important or unusual craters. I pre-ordered it from Amazon today with a publish date of October 2009. Hope it's worth the wait.
peace & clear skies,

I did get a revision notice on my order of the "Six-Inch Lunar Atlas" from Amazon. I got it yesterday (Mon 7/13). They wanted to know if I still wanted to wait or cancel my order. They could not give me any estimated shipping date!! I decided to keep waiting for the book...should be cool and I'm in no particular hurry to get it!!
P.S. This is what they said....Still want it? We'll keep on trying. To keep your order for this item open,
please click the link below. Otherwise, we'll cancel your order on August 12
2009, if we haven't located it by then.

Hi Robert,
So far no shipping notice or revision notice for me. Mind if I ask when did you ordered the book? I ordered in Jan 2009. I am hoping they got a shipment and can ship mine soon. But like I said I will wait for it as long as I have to wait.

Several days ago the Scientific American Book Club had the 6" Lunar Atlas listed in the 'coming soon' section as printing in July and available mid August. They have since removed it from the site. It sounds interesting especially if it can be opened flat for use at the scope.

Why don't you guys just bag this one and get a copy of "Moon, Mars, and Venus" by Rukl? That's about 6" tall, contains Rukl's entire lunar atlas, plus a very servicable Mars map, and only costs about $15 used. It lives in my accessory case, and I'm never without it.

Well, I'm not really losing anything! I don't get charged until it ships. I have plenty of others (lunar atlases) to use 'til I get it. No biggie! I just think it'll make a nice addition to my Lunar Atlas collection!! I do already have a copy of Rukl's atlas...strictly a desk edition!! So it's no problem waiting for this 6" atlas...just curious why no one has said anything recently about it from Amazon????

These atlases sound great. Are there any good (already published/available now) 'crater hopping' moon books? I just got a 3.5T6 and the view of the moon last night was great. I'd love to start getting more familiar with this.

I highly recommend "New Atlas of the Moon" by Legault & Brunier. It's got great lunar photographs and some clear overlays with crater names, is spiral bound, and a "moon from day-to-day" section!!! It also has sections with general info on telescopes, observing and photography!!!

mmmmm.....I would make a few MINOR improvements...but not many!! I do like the very handy size (roughly a 5x8 in. format) and it's very well put together!!
I definitely could see myself using it out in the field; and I probably would've purchased it had I seen it in the bookstore...not really a bad price!!

I received my The Six-Inch Lunar Atlas and will be returning it for a refund. The photographs and the mirror-reversed pictures are the worst I've ever seen. They're all fuzzy or pixelated. I hope it's just a printing error. I'm shocked that the photographs are supposed to be representative of a six-inch telescope as I get clearer and sharper images in a 66mm refractor.
I'll stick with my Rukl's Moon Mars and Venus as my pocket field guide.

I ordered mine back on March 31st. I just got an email saying that the estimated delivery date is September 22nd, next Tuesday. Six months. Not too bad.
I wanted to use the atlas with my 6" Mak. Maybe it will encourage me to take the Big Mak out more often. The cool-down period can be pretty lengthy.

bsim, I too am disappointed with the maps/photos...but in the beginning of the book, the author explains the quality of the images in the "How to Use This Atlas" chapter. Yes, however, my issues are also with the quality of the photos and the need for 3 of each image. I'll still hang onto it, though!

I read the explanation by the author but the Photoshop manipulation doesn't make the pictures look like hand-drawn pictures. If anything, the pictures are hard to look at. They're useless at the eyepiece. If I want hand-drawn I'll stick with Rukl.

Hi all,
After a long wait for this book it finally arrived here today. The first flip through impression was disappointing. The book is a very pocket-able size measuring about 5"x8". After looking through the book and reading the first few pages I am disappointed in the book's images. The Six-Inch Lunar Atlas by Don Spain should be retitled as a guide and not an atlas. To me an atlas is more along the lines of Rukl's Atlas of the Moon or the Hatfield Photographic Lunar Atlas, etc. but maybe I'm wrong???
The book has three images of a full moon representing views as looking naked eye and with binoculars, then with a Newtonian, cat and refractor without a diagonal, and finally the view for a cat or refractor with a diagonal. These images are mediocre at best. These same images are used as "finder" charts marked with rectangles covering the sixty main features. The sixty main features are then imaged by the author with his six inch Newtonian. Some of the images are fair but for some reason I was expecting much better, maybe this is my fault.
Each main feature has a short introduction discussing size, age, and other details about the feature. The images are labeled and then three additional images are shown as seen from binos, cats, newts, refractors with and without diagonals. But these additional images are manipulated using Photoshop Elements into a ink-line outline giving the appearance of the area in contour-like lines, almost topographical. Its an interesting digital image but not what I was expecting at all.
I will more than likely keep this book and add it to my astronomy library. I would not recommend this book as a lunar atlas because there are better examples out there. For a pocket sized atlas nothing beats Rukl's Moon Mars and Venus if you are in the market for a true atlas.

OK I added three images to my book review on my blog. Those interested in seeing what the layout looks like should get an idea from the three images posted in the article, IMO Book Review: Six-Inch Lunar Atlas.

That was a great review, Carl!! I guess I was trying to play it safe and not offend anyone!! Like I said, I also was not happy with the images in the book!! I will try to track down a copy of Rukl's Moon, Mars, and Venus. Everyone seems to give that book "high marks"!!

Robert keep looking for MMV. You will come across a cheaper copy. Check Ebay. I bought Rukl's MMV plus his Constellations book for much less. Have a look at Pocket Lunar Atlas?, in the Lunar forum here. There are images I uploaded so you can compare it to Rukl's larger lunar atlas.

Carl,
I agree with your mini review of the book here in your post. I was disappointed and even angry when I opened "The Six-Inch Lunar Atlas" and saw the poor quality of the images, especially after waiting patiently for six months. What was the author thinking? Doesn't he realize that these are NOT clear? They are fuzzy even before he processes them in his computer to produce the faux "topographical" images. In the preface he says, "With the introduction of a dedicated digital camera for lunar and planetary imaging I began to take literally thousands of images with the big refractor. After processing and editing with software I was amazed by their resolution and clarity." After taking thousands of photos you would think he'd have figured out how to bring them to a sharper focus. It's not even funny. Either the publisher did something wrong when adapting the photos to print, or ... Never mind. My comment would be edited out anyway.
I am tempted to return the book for a refund just on principal. But I'll probably keep it and try to wring some usefulness out of it. The text descriptions of the photos aren't bad. It's just that the photos are terrible. In addition, since he went to the trouble of setting up photos oriented in the manner of different astronomical instruments, he should have had the corresponding cardinal points noted around each photo. An explanation of the difference between east and west on the Moon versus east and west on the celestial sphere would also have been useful.
By the way, I have a copy of Rukl's MM&V. I bought it a couple years ago from a vendor in England for about $15. Not bad, but I would like to see the same sort of lunar atlas with dew-proof pages. So far I've resisted the temptation of ripping it apart and putting the pages in protective sleeves. I can always copy the pages or print them out from online.

Now I'm starting to think about ordering THIS book. Hmmm... sounds good. I noticed, though, that Springer has changed the availability date to December 4th. I hope it won't be another disappoint like the "Six-Inch" book. Well, you can't have too many Moon books, can you?

I'm surprised that people are going to keep the book. Return it. I did. If you ordered from Amazon it's very painless.
No need to destroy your Rukl book. You can print these Rukl images, place them in a binder or plastic sheet, and use them at your scope.

This could have been a blockbuster book for the lunatic world but missed terribly. How long before a Rukl type book revives us? I wonder what the proof images look like. I was in the printing (newspaper) business for years and I realize there is a difference in proofs and the actual printed page but could it be that BIG of a difference?
I am not getting my hopes up too much on the other lunar book, Moonwalk with Your Eyes: A Pocket Field Guide, from Springer, maybe I'll be surprised in a good way.
Mike on that other book I have a shipping date of October 2-7, 2009 from Amazon.

Yeah I surprised myself but I have several other lunar guides/atlases that are either outdated or I just don't use but have them on the bookshelf.
Ditto on your comment on Alan Chu's Moon book! Can you imagine what a treasure it would be properly printed and bound as an atlas!

As Bsim said, "Not even in the same league." The Chu book is a big download, over 100 megs, but that's not so much nowadays. The photos in it are much clearer than in the "Six Inch" book, show more detail, and were shot through a 10" f/6 Newt rather than a 6". There is also a lot of background info with supporting charts and photos. Well done. If it had been published as a book and not sent out as a pdf on the internet, I would have bought the book. I've loaded it on my desk computer and also on my HP mini notebook for field use. I haven't gotten around to actually using it in the field yet, but I probably will after this thread.

Carl, I might pass on the "Moonwalk With Your Eyes" book. Once burned ... It sounds very good, but so did "Six Inch." I think I'll wait until I see some reviews about it ... maybe here? But I'm afraid it MIGHT be a good book, and then the other lunatics will make a mad rush to buy their copies - of course, some will buy multiple copies - and I will be left in the learch with my "Six Inch Lunar Atlas."

"Moonwalk" does sound interesting to me. I like the idea of crater hopping to find specific objects, similar to star hopping. I don't have goto or pushto on any of my scopes, so that concept is second nature to me now. Here's a snippet from the Springer website listing:
Quote:
Includes 'crater hopping' instructions and maps to locate lunar features, even some that are not included in today's computer-controlled telescope databases
Identifies for viewers of all levels what can be observed using a range of different sized telescopes and binoculars
Contains challenging features not found in other lunar observing books that will appeal even to veteran lunar observers
Book will be high contrast and as readable as possible in the field under low lighting
Gives clear and consice information for first time binocular and telescope users
Sounds good to me.

Here's an idea for a new Lunie book: "Lunarisms." It would be a complete sourcebook and atlas for all the objects that observers imagine in the lunar landscape. Examples are the Moon Maiden on Promontorium Heraclides, the various "X"s and Crosses on the Moon, the Sword at Rupes Recta, the Snowman, the Tomahawk, the Claw, etc, etc. There are probably dozens of these things. Many more might be found. Personally, I think it's fun to look for them and note where they are and the best day of the Moon to see them. The book would give all this info, including a "crater hopping" guide for finding each Lunarism. Hey, I'd buy the book! It would be fun for children and a challenge for Lunar enthusiasts to observe some of the more difficult objects. I'm not into AP at all, and doubt that I ever will be, so I'm not going to put the book together. Is somebody out there listening? I'm waiting ...

Well, talk about cheeky!
"Moon, Mars, and Venus" by Rukl can be had for about $15-30 on the internet.
Except for Amazon.com.uk, which wants $236.22 for it!
I guess it's true - there's one born every minute.

Rick,
I bought my copy of MMV from someone in England who was selling it on ebay. Maybe they didn't know what they could sell it for? I also bought the three-volume edition of Burnham's for about $25 on ebay, in very good condition. You just have to keep your eyes open, know what you're buying, and have a little luck. A few years ago I bought an 1818 edition of a Greek New Testament published in USA for 50 cents at a book sale. I've seen the same thing being sold, page by page, about $50+ per page, on the internet. The pages were nicely framed, of course. I believe that's what they politely call "value added."

I wonder how many get sold for $236.22? I mean, do people scroll down past all the cheap ones, then see this one and say "that's the one I want!!!"?

I scrolled up to the "semi"-cheap ones...I really didn't want to deal with going overseas. Alibris Bookseller, I think is in California. Yeah, I know that's almost as 'far' as UK/England...but I can handle that!! As long as the Moon maps are in good shape, I'm fine! It was only saying it had 'slight' cover damage?????We'll see!!

Remember the schmuck saying, "You get what you pay for." Yes, you do. Unless you steal it, somebody gives it to you, or it never arrives in the mail! But seriously, and obviously, just because someone pays more for something doesn't necessarily mean it is actually worth more. The only certainty is that he paid more for it. If you don't do the research, "You pays your money and you takes your chance" is a saying that makes more sense.

Overseas isn't as 'far' as it used to be. I've bought gizmos or books from Hong Kong, France, England, and they've arrived within a week or so, no problem. It all depends on the company. One item from Hong Kong arrived broken, I sent them an email and they sent me another one within a few days. It was only a $5 item, but that's still not bad.

Hi all,
So far I have been lucky finding and buying MMV. I purchased one copy from England which included a copy of Rukl's "Constellations" same publisher as the MMV and in the same format. I think I paid $26 USD incl shipping for them.
I will be the first to admit I have overpaid for books too. I don't think I would pay $236 for a copy of MMV. But I did pay $100 for a copy of the "The Times Atlas of the Moon". This book is a large format book of the Lunar Aeronautical Charts used for the Apollo missions. The reasoning behind paying that amount was in all my years of astro book collecting I had never come across this book and thought it would be worth it. It was!
The safe bet is to keep checking Amazon and ebay for the book and someday, someone will post a copy for cheap with reasonable shipping.
peace & clear skies,

I once paid $47.50 for a booklet related to another hobby. About 2 weeks later I found two copies of the same booklet (both in better condition) for $2.25 each. I learned something that day.

I spent $200.00 on a 1908 copy of "Mars and it's Canals" by Percival Lowell. It's in GOOD condition!! It's a lot to pay, but I consider it probably the best $200 I ever spent!!!

It all depends on the company. Some will give you "free" shipping, but most will charge a reasonable amount for shipping, nothing exhorbitant, especially for small items like books. I've never bought a large, heavy item from overseas, so I imagine that might be a problem. The heaviest thing I ever bought was a 1.25" eyepiece from a company in Germany. But the shipping is usually comparable to or not much more than what many companies charge right in the USA. Get a shipping quote before you buy. On some internet sites you may have to put the item in the "basket," and be right on the verge of finalizing the order before you can get the shipping, but before that you can back out. Just don't put in your credit card number. Then it is usually too late.

I wonder if it is in the public domain yet? If it is, then maybe Google has scanned a copy and put it on line. I've gotten several old astronomy books that way, in pdf format. I think, though, that 1908 may not be old enough for that.

It looks like the 1911 edition of Lowell's book can be downloaded as a pdf file from Google. (The link is too long to give here. I know there's a way to get around that, but the book is easy to search for on Google.) I know it's not the same as actually owning the book and holding it in your hands. My preferred way of reading a book is the old-fashioned way: easier on the eyes, and often it's actually faster to locate something in a real book.

Hey, as long as I get it by the Oct. 25th promise date and for the same price...then that's OK with me!!!

Sounds good. You'll like it. Rukl's drawings of the Moon are really excellent. Much better than many photographs I've seen. In fact, when I first glanced at a website which showed Rukl's lunar drawings, I thought they were photos!

I just got me a copy of Moon, Mars, & Venus from Amazon.UK marketplace for $26 including shipping and currency conversion. Amazon UK has more options for reasonable prices vs going through the Amazon US site. Some of the vendors will ship to the US but some won't, so if one doesn't work try another.
Now that I have it, this is easily the best pocket lunar atlas that has been published. And no wonder as the maps are identical to the Rukl Atlas of the Moon except for scale and color tone.
This demands reprinting, just as the larger Atlas has.

Starbux,
I do wish MMV were laminated, though, as I'm somewhat reluctant to take it out in the field. It tends to get dewy in Maryland. I have all the Rukl maps downloaded onto my mininote so I can reference them if I need to, but I prefer using hard copies. Often looking in a real book is faster and easier than using a computer version. Of course, I could print all the maps out, insert them in plastic overlays, and use them in a loose-leaf binder. I just have to get around to doing it!
Clear Skies, Mike
P.S.: I would still like to have the original Rukl Atlas of the Moon, but that is much rarer than the MMV and much more expensive. I wish they would reprint them both.

Robert,
There are 76 Rukl lunar maps in total that can be downloaded and printed out from the internet. Well, I guess that's not too bad. I've done similar projects in the past for DSO finder charts and such. Clear protector sheets with three holes for looseleaf binders are fairly inexpensive in 100 counts at K-Mart, Walmart, etc. You can save on space and protector sheets by inserting two maps in each one. It is a very do-able project. It's defintely on my To Do List!
Cheers, Mike

On the other hand, if you download all 76 Rukl maps in one directory on your laptop's hard drive and set the View to Filmstrip mode, that's pretty neat, too.

Yes, I did download those Rukl charts and I did bring them over to Staples for printing! As we read this, they're being printed out! Unfortunately, I'm settling for B&W for now...it's only .09 per sheet compared to .50 per color sheet!! I'm thinking, good enough for general lunar studies at the scope...outside!!! Ocean State Job Lot...RI's biggest 'dollar-store' chain, has plastic page protectors for $2.00 for a pkg of 10.

Sounds like a plan! Yes, I think I'll have to settle for B&W, too. The maps may even have more contrast in B&W. I'll see. I know some lunatics would disagree with me on this point, but the Moon is a pretty colorless world. B&W is fine. I look at Luna through binoviewers with a #47 Violet filter, so you know I'm not too concerned about her "natural" colors. Whatever works!
Another good idea might be to look into these scrapebooking folders. They have sheet protectors and nice substantial covers. My local stores like Ollie's, Michael's, etc. have them on sale sometimes. Just an idea.

I have a Michael's just down the street!! I'll check there tomorrow!! Let me tell you, the B&W looks just great!!!They were printed on a whiter stock than normal copy paper, just one grade higher...cost is .10/pg. The contrast is great, not too muddy looking, and easy to read!! Highly recommend Staples' service!!!

I had a feeling the B&W would be good, maybe even improve the contrast over Rukl's original sepia hues.

I finally got around to checking this (in moderator mode - needed to make sure no copyrights we being violated by the site with the Rukl's maps). FWIW the maps appear to be from the previous edition of the atlas, and it's posted on the site that this was developed for educational purposes with the approval of Rukl.
I can't help wondering if the availability of these charts online had something to do with the demise of the most recent print edition.

Tom, I would still like to buy a nice, spiral-bound, laminated field edition of the Rukl Moon Atlas in a somewhat larger format than the MMV, maybe something comparable to the Cambridge Double Star Atlas. The fact that I can download Rukl maps from the internet has little bearing on that fact. I'm sure there are a lot of lunatics who share that opinion. But whether or not we are a large enough demographic to warrant a new edition or a new printing of the current one, I have no idea. At any rate, I also know for a fact, from my own experience, and for whatever reason(s), the lunar enthusiasts are constantly being, uh, "disrespected" by the publishers. 'Nuff said.
Clear Skies, Mike

Well I just broke down and bought that New Atlas of the Moon book for $15.00 (new) on-line. It was money well spent. This atlas is a good companion to Wood's Modern Moon book.

I think "New Atlas of the Moon" is a great book!! In case anyone is keeping score...I still haven't received my copy of Rukl's "Moon, Mars & Venus". I ordered it from Alibris Bookseller on 9/22/09 and they suggested it would come by 10/25. Not Yet!!! They tell me it is coming from an overseas dealer...England!! So now I gotta keep waiting!!

Wow Robert I thought my luck was bad? Don't give up on MMV. Period! You need this book in your astro library. If you use ebay place a search in there and ebay will notify you when one comes available. Keep looking for one!
