Is S&T available as an "E Magazine" I can subscribe to and read on my iPad?

S&T has a digital version that can be read on a normal computer. You can subscribe here. There may be another page where a trial version is visible -- I'll check downstairs.
This e-reader probably works poorly or not at all on an iPad. An iPad-specific version of S&T is in the planning stages, but is not yet available.

Nsldvd,
I see the link for the Sky & Telescope free digital download preview on the Sky & Telescope home web page. If it is not visible when you first open the home page, refresh the page a few times and the various ads change showing the digital preview link. Also, try this shortened URL;
http://tinyurl.com/3yw5waj
or this full length link to the same page;
http://staging.nxtbook.com/splash/newtrack/sky_w.php?nxturl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nxtbook.com%2Fnxtbooks%2Fnewtrack%2Fst_201005_v2%2Findex.php
For S&T subscribers that are having trouble with printed versions arriving via their mail, the digital version might be a good solution.
I am not computer savvy so cannot suggest a work around for reading the digital version on an iPad but if you have some free time, you might try downloading the various Free eReader Apps for iPad offered by Barnes & Noble, Kindle, Borders, etc and see if the digital download works with any of these. Also, if your iPad is still new enough to have free Apple support, try to work with Apple Support to find a work around. I am surprised to read that the iPad is not supporting being able to read a variety of digital downloads such as S&T. Another source for support with Apple products is their own Forum that I think they call "Discussions"; Apple.com > Support > Discussions > iPad

You can save a copy of the online magazine in Adobe AIR format. Unfortunately, I can't find any apps built for the iPad that read Adobe AIR. Plenty of very good PDF readers, though.
If PDF were an option we would be in business. And maybe that was the non-AIR option offered at the bottom of the download page. But that link no longer works so I couldn't verify.
I'll wait to see what happens with the electronic version of S&T.

My understanding is that if the reader is Flash based it's not going to work on your iPad. Apple has chose not to support Flash but rather HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript.

It does work very well on my iPod (touch), though...and that is really cool!

I save a copy of my online version as a PDF. If the iPad can read PDFs then it seems it should work.

Wow, the user experience on the iPhone is great for the trial issue. I imagine it is even better on the iPad. Props to S&T for using a full HTML rendering.

Ok, I've now thrown my $12 for a full year's digital subscription. It has been very nice from experience. Some notes:
* Somewhere in the signup process they note they are available on ipad, iphone, and android. This is no doubt due to their HTML content
* I couldn't find the "archives" button on the iPhone but I could change the end of the URL from 201002 to 201011 for the newest issue.
* You can share pages from the iPhone via email.
* They have an RSS feed to notify you when they have new issues available.

I've had issues accessing the archive. When a new issue is added I have to email Nxtbook to "have my profile adjusted". I believe my profile has been adjusted five times now... It's getting monotonous. I've sent an email to New Track. I'm hoping they'll follow up with Nxtbook to resolve the matter.

A glance in the mirror shows me that some (probably many) exist who own or will own an e-reader such as a Nook or a Kindle, but have no interest in an ipad.

Was the $12 annual subscription price because you already had a paper subscription and you paid the 99 cents/issue to add the digital subscription?

No doubt. But who wants to read Sky and Telescope in black and white? That is my problem with the Kindle.

B&W version of S&T wouldn't do it for me, which is why I've extended my paper subscription. Doesn't mean I won't try the electronic version on my laptop, but the laptop model I selected last winter isn't the most portable of its kind.
From various things I've been reading it sounds like color e-ink is a high priority for the folks developing these products. When a color version hits the market, I'll take another (and much closer) look at the Kindle and its ilk, as well as electronic versions of such as S&T and Scientific American.

Funny thing? Despite my ideas to the contrary, I actually now prefer reading the magazine on my desktop PC. I'm maintaining my paper subscription, but, frankly I could let it go.

The electronic version is not really at this time a Kindle or iPad version. It's an internet version that can be viewed on devices that have internet access. It cost about 29$ a year so it is cheeper than the printed version and leaves no foot print (so to speak). But if you don't have internet access at any given time then you don't have your mag. With a true Kindle or iPad app, once downloaded it is then "in" you device and not subject to internet needs. Hopefully this will be coming soon. In the mean time, it is in full color...

It's pretty easy to save issues to your local machine, or to save as a .pdf--neither of which will help with an iPod or iPad, of course.

I checked digital S&T on my iPad on my current trip and it is a slightly different HTML experience than on the iPhone. Pages take up the full browser and you tap the upper left of the page to bring up a menu to change page, table of contents, etc. All in all a nice experience from website to portable devices.
