Does cN.com already have a listing & topic on really good books on telescopes?
Allow me to point out a few as a starter:
Telescopes through the looking glass
Marvin Bolt - Adler Planetarium 2009
Excellent book with great pictures of early telescopes
Unusual Telescopes
Peter Manly - Cambridge University Press 1995
Small book with photos of world's most amazing telescopes
The History of the telescope
Henry King - Cambridge Sky Pub 1955
Probably the best book on telescopes ever written
Also check the topic on really good books on astronomical observatories

"Realm of the Long Eyes" by James Kloeppel is a nice book on the history of Kitt Peak, featuring chapters on several of the scopes including the McMath Pierce and the Mayall.
"The Perfect Machine" by Ronald Florence is an excellent book about the building of the 200 inch on Mount Palomar.
Clear skies, -- Shane

I just discoverd Amateur Telescope Making by Albert Ingalls, with the forward by Dr. Harlow Shapley at the used book store today. It was the original hardback version from 1928 and in old but solid condition. I think I should go and get it. It looks like it needs a good home.

and how many of these books deal with only telescopes, the differences between various types of telescopes, which type is better for which type of object, etc., etc
What are some really good books on telescopes?

The History of the telescope Henry King - Cambridge Sky Pub 1955 Probably the best book on telescopes ever written... but it needs a 21st century update
If You're interested in the really large telescopes ( 10 m class and larger ), check:
The scientific requirements for Extremely Large telescopes Patricia Whitelock 2006 Cambridge University Press
Future Giant Telescopes J Roger, P angel and Roberto Gilmozzi 2002 SPIE Volume 4840

Those two books look interesting, i have ordered them.
I can also recommend: The telescope by Bell Instrument makers to the world Mcconnell Artists in optics Der meister und die fernrohre - the classic german text, the new version has several excellent chapters in english Long route to the invention of the telescope-willach- a fascinating read The invention of the telescope-albert van helden Reflecting telescope optics-rn wilson - which includes an excellent history of reflecting telescopes.
There's a lot out there!

Wow - this triplet set is expensive.
Just recieved the book done by the Adler - really great pictures. It was surprising to read that only a dozen telescopes are known to exist from the period prior to 1650.
Another great book on telescopes with very nice pictures is Warner and Swasey " a few astronomical instruments"

You can find a brand new and, I expect, a very welcome addition to the literature here. I've certainly been looking forward to it.

The Gillespie book on the Great Melbourne Telescope is really great! Highly recommend it.
For those with a historical bent, John Herschel's book, "The Telescope," from ~1860 which you can find free on Google Books or the Internet Archive is quite fascinating.
Henry King's "The History of the Telescope" is a good read with lots of info. But it does have bloopers and is best for developments in England and the USA. King wrote it about ~1950, and its coverage of Germany, France, and elsewhere is not so complete.
Fred Watson's book, "Life and Times of the Telescope," is a good read too, I think.
Rolf Riekher's "Fernrohre und ihre Meister" [Telescopes and their Master Makers] is probably currently the best thing, but is in German. Rumor is that there's an English translation underway which will be pretty up-to-date when complete.
Cheers, Roger

Perhaps not quite what you're looking for, but there is a three part cyclopaedia of telescope makers that is fun and interesting and available on line. Part one can be found here.
