Highly recommend it. For those with a historical bent, John Herschel's book, "The Telescope," from ~1860 which you can find free on Google Books or the Internet Archive is quite fascinating... Roger Roger, I would really like to read this book but could not find it on either site that you mentioned above. Could you or someone else point me in the right direction? I've used both sites, especially Google Books, in the past. Who's writing the one one american and european astronomers? I would like to add a word of caution to anyone purchasing these books: when my volumes arrived, they were underpacked in the shipping box. Volume 1 arrived intact, but Volume 2 had a big tear through the front of the paper book cover ( fortunately the book itself was intact). I notified the seller ( who is the publisher as well I believe) immediately, and he agreed ( in writing by email) to send me a replacement book cover for volume 2. I have not received the cover yet after months and he has not responded at all to my last two emails. Considering these books are not cheap (180 euros +shipping), and that the condition of the cover significantly affects the resale value of the books, and that the fault is his for underpacking - the whole situation seems completely unreasonable. I've never had a problem like this purchasing any book before - really, he's to cheap too send me a replacment book cover? I'm posting this mainly to give everyone a heads up, but if anyone has any suggestions for recourse - I'm open to suggestions. A superb reference with details on mirror diameters/materials, first light dates etc... Wilson. a dense and at times very technical source, but indispensable. Telescope Optics by Harrie Rutten & Martin van Venrooij is widely quoted on CN, and deserves to be.
