The Gillespie book on the Great Melbourne Telescope is really great! Highly recommend it.
For those with a historical bent, John Herschel's book, "The Telescope," from ~1860 which you can find free on Google Books or the Internet Archive is quite fascinating... Roger
Roger, I would really like to read this book but could not find it on either site that you mentioned above. Could you or someone else point me in the right direction? I've used both sites, especially Google Books, in the past. Thanks for your help, -Jason

Not specific on telescope hardware, but this book has great illustrations. By the way there's one in the works on the history of European and American Amateur astronomers!

The Chapman book looks intriguing.
Who's writing the one one american and european astronomers?
I can also recommend this 2 volume set - its in german, but the plates are superb, especially the second volume: http://repsold.de/seite/buch-vorschau/

A verry, very good one,
Now this is curious. I entered a search for the book in the US Amazon site and in addition to Asimov's book, I found another book with the exact same title and almost the same cover design.
Did Patrick Moore rip off Asimov?

I had recommended the Respold above, and the book volumes themselves are quite good. I would like to add a word of caution to anyone purchasing these books: when my volumes arrived, they were underpacked in the shipping box. Volume 1 arrived intact, but Volume 2 had a big tear through the front of the paper book cover ( fortunately the book itself was intact). I notified the seller ( who is the publisher as well I believe) immediately, and he agreed ( in writing by email) to send me a replacement book cover for volume 2. I have not received the cover yet after months and he has not responded at all to my last two emails. Considering these books are not cheap (180 euros +shipping), and that the condition of the cover significantly affects the resale value of the books, and that the fault is his for underpacking - the whole situation seems completely unreasonable. I've never had a problem like this purchasing any book before - really, he's to cheap too send me a replacment book cover?
I'm posting this mainly to give everyone a heads up, but if anyone has any suggestions for recourse - I'm open to suggestions.

Certainly Alan, those ESO books are long-awaited books and I volunteered to work on the Europe to the Stars Appendix which lists ALL telescopes used by ESO at several observatories including La Silla, Paranal and Chajnantor. A superb reference with details on mirror diameters/materials, first light dates etc...

I am going to put in a pre-order for a copy of your book.
This is a thread about good books on telescopes but here is a DVD that is worth mentioning -about the Allegheny observatory and its telescopes - I have a copy on order - it has not yet shipped so I haven't seen it yet link to Undaunted

top of the pile, authoritative and extremely dense: Reflecting Telescope Optics (2 volumes) by R.N. Wilson. a dense and at times very technical source, but indispensable.
Telescope Optics by Harrie Rutten & Martin van Venrooij is widely quoted on CN, and deserves to be.
