A video observing log! What a good idea! Good job, Karl.

I liked the descriptions with different telescope sizes as well as the observing tips. I'd just suggest that at times the narration was a bit too low-volume against the background music and maybe a bit difficult to understand, at least for a non-native English speaker like me. The female voice, on the other hand, sounded very articulate.

Thanks for the link!

Have you ever considered lengthening the videos slightly and adding finder charts? or adding a link to finder charts??

Hi Andy

Thanks for your comments, and I'm very glad to hear you're enjoying them

The answer to your question is yes we are going to do more in each video. Adding more galaxies (particularly in spring and autumn), possible sketches, and so on. Also we may do a special GL with many spring galaxies using just the 4" refractor. Kind of a tribute to Walter Scott Houston and his Deep Sky Wonders column whom had a big influence on me, and used a 4" refractor for many of his observations. That will take some time to do though.

I would have to think about using charts, though not sure if we'll be able to use say some of the charts from the modern sky charts published today (we would have to get permission no doubt). Possible using the star finding charts HASB has, though not near as detailed as say Uranometria. Putting say the chart # of say Unranometria is also a possibility.

Basically Galaxy Log will evolve.

Oh, feel free to put any observations of any of the respective month's galaxies in the comment section.

Well done. I might suggest you speak a little slower. People from the North East and West coast as well as young people in general tend to speak faster. This can be a little off-putting to others and confusing to older people . Take notice of professional communicators, and you'll notice they speak a bit more slowly and enunciate well.
Good job, though.

Hi Andy

Our CAS Starfest 2013 is planned for August 3 with the 4th, 10th, 11th as rain/cloud dates.

It's held at Hopewell National Furnace next to French Creek State park in Pa. southwest of Pottstown.

The skies are good for a public star party, for we need an area that’s easy for the public to find, but at least dark enough for them to see great views through the telescopes.

Included of course before nightfall are presentations by CAS members, and usually a special guest speaker from NASA or someone from the astro department from a college/university. Also many astro gifts, including telescopes are usually raffled.

Thanks Jim and Andy and we're glad people are liking the videos. I may throw in another galaxy or two for the April GL.

Andy, you certainly have the "tools" (scopes) to observe all these galaxies. Tracking down galaxies can take some practice, and it's kind of like riding a bike, as in the more you do it, the easier it gets. You'll develop ways that best suit you and your scopes.

If you're just star hopping (or galaxy hopping) without a GoTo or digital setting circles (like both my large dobs and the 4" refractor), I then like the combination of a zero power finder like a Telrad or Rigel with a good finder scope. On large scopes, I like the larger finders of 60mm or more (I use a 80mm on the 22"). A good detailed chart or charts that are available in print form or a computer chart program is essential. Oh, and remember patience.

If you're going to NEAF (Saturday) I'll be there as usual, and we can talk a bit about galaxy observing.

Now if the skies clear around here...

I too use a telrad and 50mm finder on the 16 inch. Sadly the 16 inch is setting in the house, I knew about the new scope curse , but dern.
Of course the last 2 night have been clear early , but are clouded up by 11 pm when I get off
By the time I get Elekta to dark skys Ill have to relearn the constellations again, sheeesh

As for NEAF I really wanted to go one day this year, Im hoping.

Good report......glad you got good skies for your birthday.
The sketch, your wifes? , was excellant.
Glad you got the old scope out again.
I had originally planned to buy a 12 inch but when the 16 came up for sale , at a really reasonable price, I jumped.
The 16 does fit in the back seat of my little ole Ford Taurus.

Excellent video as usual. your daughters sketch purty dern god for her first time.

I noted in the photo of the Hickson grouping, far left three stars in a line , red, blue and white, its very striking and drew my eye immediately.

Hi Andy

Thanks, and also Jill will be doing more.

I looked into those 3 "stars", and it looks like they are 3 PGC galaxies per WIKISKY.ORG

I'm guessing the brightest of these far away galaxies is around 19th mag plus, which is beyond my 22" dob, though something like Jim Lowrey's 48" dob in west Texas would no doubt reel them in.

Thanks Andy.

Yes, Jillian even as a child was always fascinated by nature and Space in general.

I remember her one science project (I think it was 5th grade), Jill's theme was Light Pollution. Yep, she got an A for it.

She's a chip off the old block in love for deep space.

Below is Jillian working out some "bugs" in her mount.

Play with various magnifications to get the most out of the object(s). Particularly ones with higher surface brightness.

Dumb question if I might, when you used the 20mm eye piece with the 4 inch f/10 on NGC 278 , did it appear as a fuzzy disk, or just a slightly out of focus star, but you knew what it was???
I've searched in the area for 278 in the past, never from a dark sky site, and not found it.

Awesome video as always . Thanks for sharing.

First, thanks

Yes, it's a small galaxy in a rich area of stars. So at 50x it does look like a fuzzy star in a field of pinpoints from a 4" refractor's perspective.

It does have a nice fairly high surface brightness, so it will promote high magnifications.

outstanding video, is this the first M object you've covered? possibly bright galaxy's for a small scope this time of year harder to find, other than messier's?.

Thanks Andy.

No, we did M-106 in May's 2013 GL.

There are still a number of non-Messier galaxies this time of year for the smaller scopes. Our problem for that will probably come in the summer month's down the road.

Anyway, I was very pleased with the views I had of M-33 that night with the 4" refractor, which was the night I chased away a bear and a small Screech Owl scared the pants off me. Wrote about it here...owl not included(a bit embarrassing).

Thanks

Here's what I wrote about that night on the CAS site about the owl:

About an hour later after the bear incident, as I went to the passenger side of the van for coffee. Here a Screech Owl was sitting on my van rack unbeknownst to me, and when I approached the van he took off making a sound, and scared the *BLEEP* out of me. So a black bear didn't scare me much, but a 7 to 8 inch tall raptor of the night scared the pants off me.

Gotta love the night.

So there you have it.

Thanks Andy

Sorry about the late reply.

I'm certainly not the best sketcher, but I must say that it was -1 degree at the time, and had at least a lighter glove on my left hand to sketch. So I was pleased with the result.

I did say to my observing comrade (the 25” dob owner) that I wish I had observed and sketched through the 8” refractor, but with the elements (cold and still icy patches at the site) the smaller more compact 6” refractor was used instead.

I observed it again this past week (again real cold at 5 degrees), but with my 22” f/4.5 dob. I borrowed a 4.7mm Ethos (amazing eyepiece) that gave me a magnification of 533x. Though the SN has dimmed a bit, the view quite astonishing.

Good video ,again, and interesting opening. As just this morning I was scrounging around for pics and charts for Markarians chain, and finally down loaded both. Then came here and saw the galaxy log alert. Ive never actually seen Markarians chain , nor have I attempted to find and or verify all the messiers in the Virgo cluster.

I like it....several years ago, I was unable to find some messiers, mostly because I had seen photos of them, and had poor expectations.
The new format shows what can really be seen

Good job as always

Thanks Owen

We will use the beautiful higher rez images here and there for different purposes.

I felt I wanted to give a more honest view or show the more novice observers what to expect. This could also sharpen observing skills at the eyepiece.

It's a lot more work to do the NearView, but I felt the time was right to go this way.

Even Frank C. (astro-imager)likes this. Hey, he still does eyepiece viewing
