A new printable atlas - Deep Sky Hunter
      #5771418 - 04/01/13 06:29 PM

Hello all,

I'd like to share a new PDF atlas I've assembled (even gave it a name this time )
http://www.deepskywatch.com/deep-sky-hunter-atlas.html

The idea was to make a (relatively) detailed atlas for deep sky observers, with stars plotted down to magnitude 10.2 and deep sky objects down to magnitude 14. It has a clean appearance, without clutter of information, and readable labels which do not overlap stars . There are 101 pages overall which cover entire sky (30x40 double page spreads), and additional 8 pages with 21 detailed supplement charts. Best DSOs are marked with a star symbol (Messier, Herschel400 and Caldwell objects). Also there are two index maps, navigation marks, common names, marked double stars, RA/DEC grid (epoch 2013), constellation lines.

I designed it for A3 portrait printing, at 600dpi in black & white. It looks, however, quite usable on A4 as well (your choice).

This is an example of Scorpius region:

And this is a part of close Virgo cluster close up chart:

Some example charts: Chart 9 Appendix 14.

Direct download link of the full version (40MB PDF file),
Or you may find additional download mirrors on my site, including version limited to -60 and -35 degrees of declination.

Hi Michael and two thumbs-up for this Atlas. It is a nice body of work and not so encompassing that you "can not see the forest for the trees". Thank you for making this Atlas available to the community.

Thanks so much for your hard work and sharing this. Looks like you've really found the sweet spot with this--plenty of DSO's without being overwhelming. Great job!

I just tried downloading it on a different computer - it works fine for me. Maybe the file got currupted during download. Anyway you can also try downloading from this mirror: https://www.box.com/s/blczk1xvuo72p69yo1qr

What a beautiful atlas! I love simple and uncluttered, and you have nailed it. (I'm also partial to constellation lines, glad to see them). I am not a DSO hunter, but a Double Star observer. This atlas will be perfect to plot the designations on. Thank you for sharing!

Actually my older atlas might me more suitable for you, since it is more scaled for A4 paper, and already has separations for "SAC's best doubles" indicated. but it looks slightly more like a "toy".
By the way - can you recommend me a slightly larger list of select double stars? (few hundred of targets) - I might consider designating them in the atlas some time later.

And I also never understood why commercial atlases do not feature constellation lines. It makes it so hard to naviage through pages (especially on multi-page atlas like Uranometria)

Michael,

Wow. This atlas looks really nice. I'm going to print a copy (maybe both).

What was the source of your star data?

BTW, the rest of your website is great too; a nice resource.

The source is Sky Map pro 10 software. It delivers the most "atlas-like" printouts among any other programs I've used.

Michael,
I really like your first version, especially how you included the separation of doubles. At first, I thought it would be nice to include the magnitudes, but then I realized it would clutter the atlas, and you have the sense of the brightness by the magnitude scale anyway.

There is an excel sheet on the internet called WDSPrimaryStars.xls which list the double stars that have a Bayer or Flamsteed designation. I sorted it so that only those which could be viewed by a 90mm telescope were listed.

I have come across several lists of doubles with nice or contrasting colors. I've always wanted to compile a master list of these. I will let you know if I get this finished.

~ Dan

I printed a couple of charts on 11"x17" (92% scaling) and 13"x19" (109% scaling), and they're looking great! Letter size scale is a little cramped for me for field use. Thanks again for the atlas, Michael!
