21st Century Atlas of the Moon
      #6114884 - 10/03/13 10:42 AM

I finally decided to buy this book but I'm having trouble finding one for sale. Is it sold out? I know there where some typos/error in the first edition, will there be a second edition? If so when. A pointer to a sales point would be appreciated.

According to this order page for the 21st Century Atlas of the Moon the 2nd printing began in June 2013. At least I hope that is the case, since I ordered one a few days ago.

Hi Al,

I think the original release was Nov/Dec 2012. Check out this LPOD forum thread, New Atlas!! and this post from Nov. 18, 2012, NO LONGER SECRET. When my atlas comes in I can compare it to the errata sheet that is posted on LPOD.

peace & clear skies,

How time flies! OK, so June 2013 is likely the 2nd printing. I'll wait for your feedback.

Thanks
Al

Checking the LPOD webpage for the 21st Century Atlas of the Moon, there is no mention of a 2nd printing.

From that page :

Order Now
The Atlas is now being distributed - and soon will be reprinted by - West Virginia University Press. The Chicago Distribution Center handles the actual sales. You can order in any of 5 ways:

I took the 'reprinted' to mean a 2nd edition.

Most use first in first out, to prevent/reduce/avoid obsolescence. Last in first out would guarantee obsolescence, in a relatively short time.

I'm wrong, sorry guys. My memory is terrible (suffered stoke last year). Here is MY question to Mr. Wood in July 2013. You can read it here in a forum post, New Edition? so I guess I ordered a first edition with errors. Oh well...

I bought my copy 3 weeks ago and the book I received has a copyright of 2012 with no indication that it is a second printing. As Rick stated, I have only seen minor errors.

It is a beautiful atlas that is a great addition to my collection, and has already proved to be quite useful at the eyepiece!

I was curious so I sent Charles Wood an email. The short version of Charles's answer is that the books being sold today are still identical to those that were sold when it was first released (see Richard's post above). Also, he wasn't sure if the typos in the first printing would be corrected in a future version because of the expense of doing so (note that he didn't rule it out, he said that he wasn't sure). I'm tempted to buy a copy of this book, I'm currently weighing it up against other potential uses for my capped toy fund.

From the link above: "The Atlas is now being distributed - and soon will be reprinted by - West Virginia University Press. The Chicago Distribution Center handles the actual sales..." I thought Chuck was trying to extricate himself from having to personally act as the sole distributor? My apologies if I'm wrong.

I mentioned this somewhere else, but...

The 21st Century Atlas is a perfect companion for reading "Modern Moon". I just re-read MM, and by chance used the atlas with it. Killer! They used to bundle MM and Rukl in a slipcase; but this would be the better pairing now (no disrespect to Rukl, which is still king IMO).

I too would like to order the 21st Century Atlas of the Moon. But I don't see an option to buy it directly from the author. Looks like he has handed off duties to that university press. And they are out of stock at the moment. I guess Modern Moon is out of print too ?

I started this thread because I was having trouble finding the book and was pointed to the distributor, who is turning out to be less than a 'stand up' player. Now it's important to me to let others know that the distributor is not shipping the book and is not responding to queries. I wish someone before me had done the same.

Wood is the books author. He is not the distributer I am dealing with. This hasn't been about Wood since I placed my order with West Virginia University Press, they told me the book would ship the following day (over 3 weeks ago now) and took my CC number. I see informing potential buyers about past experiences with a vendor as a good thing to do.

I guess not. It used to be in his S&T column, but not this month; and it's not in the Atlas, either. If it's not on the web page, maybe he's not advertising it any more. Sorry I brought it up!

As an alternative, I would highly recommend the Reiseatlas Mond from Oculum-Verlag, Germany. This high-resolution photographical atlas is based on Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter images. Economically priced at 29,90 Euros (plus shipping), in my opinion this is the best ring-bound and laminated Moon atlas money can buy today.

Wow, if this were in English and available from a site I could understand, I'd order immediately. I like the fact that the map scale is smaller (more like Rukl) and I also like the fact that most visible features are labeled. Also, I like the greyed-out border areas of each map section that show features from neighboring map sections.

With 21st Century Atlas of the Moon (21CAOTM), while I like it and use it regularly, I was disappointed with the larger map scale and smaller number of labels (compared to Rukl). Consequently, I typically use both 21CAOTM and Rukl with me at the scope. Also the treatment of map borders in both is an annoyance. In the case of the 21CAOTM, I found it incredible that the area including Copernicus was split up over four different map sections!

Paul,

The German publisher, Oculum-Verlag, welcomes international customers. Just send your English-written inquiry to bestellung@oculum.de

Another highly recommended source is Intercon Spacetec, Germany, e-mail: info@intercon-spacetec.de

Attention, do not order from Amazon.com, since the risk is high that they will sell a "Perfect Paperback Copy" (POD) to you.
If you want the real McCoy, buy either from Oculum-Verlag or Intercon-Spacetec. Both offer good and reliable service.

Stephan

But, the images in the 21st Century Atlas are just soooooo beautiful! It's not the all-in-one Lunar atlas; but it should be part of every Lunar observer's arsenal.

Yes. I also agree with your previous comment about 21st Century Atlas of the Moon being a great pairing with Modern Moon.

It seems Cambridge concentrates on smaller, narrower fields of view, mostly on individual objects and formations!
21st Cent Atlas concentrates on a wider swath of Lunar real estate, then pinpoints with images of individual topics of interest. I personally think 21st Cent Atlas is more an "All-round"atlas. Both books have a valued place in my astronomical library......but I think 21st Cent Atlas is better to use at the eyepiece!!!!!

Publisher's webpage Reiseatlas Mond, German only, use Google Translate to read.

Do not miss it out!

I saw and looked over a copy of this publication at the Arizona Astronomy Equipment Convention this past weekend. I was disappointed in the print quality of the moon maps. They looked like newspaper prints. Between the grainy print and gray tones it was hard to read the map under a brightly lite room much less under moon light or with a flash light. The text page was better with fonts that were large enough and black on a white background to make them easy to see under most viewing conditions. It would be nice if there was an English version of the atlas; my German is "nicht gut'. I did not see anything that would distinguish this moon atlas from others on the market. I give it 1

Edward,

The original edition of Reiseatlas Mond (as still distributed by Oculum-Verlag) is using a very heavy high-quality paper and has excellent high-resolution photo-like printings of the moon charts. I purchased not less than three copies directly from the publisher so I know what I am speaking of, and these copies leave nothing to be desired.

Did you check if the copy you are describing ("like newspaper prints") is a cheap POD-junk as distributed by anyone else? On POD-copies, normally a small indication is found on last page or back cover.

I think it would be very interesting to the original publisher and distributor (Oculum-Verlag) to know more about this subject, in particular who produced and distributes such junk copies as described by you, since it is degrading and damaging the reputation of both, the publisher and the original product.

Please feel free to send any confidential info by PM, so I may forward your info to Oculum-Verlag for further investigation.

Stephan

Interesting; the copy I saw was prominently displayed above the rest of the books for sale by a major astro publisher. I leafed through the atlas for 2 minutes but did not see anything to indicate that what I was looking at was a POD or sample copy and there was nothing posted beside the atlas to indicate such. The front & back were heavy stock, glossy, paper printed in color as were the rest of the pages (which made the grainy, gray tone pictures look worse) and the binding was on par with other atlases such as the Cambridge Double Star Atlas. Overall the atlas did not strike me as something that just anyone would have put together (I have printed and bound my own star atlases from this forum). I'm not saying that what I was looking at was not a POD or sample copy just that there was nothing to indicate it was. Thank you Stellarfire for pointing out to the community the difference between what I saw and what the publisher of this atlas is producing. I will have to keep an eye out for another copy of this moon atlas and have another look.

Congratulations, that's a great find!

I received my copy of the atlas and after checking the nice quality of the book, I ordered a second one from Amazon.com at $22.22 + shipping.

This book was clearly designed to be used in the field and when possible I try to have a backup copy of my Astronomy field books.

On the title page of both copies that I received from Amazon says:

"West Virginia University Press 26506
c 2013 Charles Woodd & Maurice Collins
All rights reserved
First printing 2012 Lunar Publishing, UIAI, Inc.,
Wheeling WV 26003"

"ISBN: PB 978-1-938228-80-3".

When I bought my first copy from Amazon, I saw 17 copies 'fly from their shelves' in about 3 days, so if I was considering acquiring this book, I would act soon!

They have 2 copies left in stock ($26.99) at the time of this post.

Hi Tony,

I just have a few lunar atlases, but this is my second favorite so far! My top one is still the Atlas of the Moon by Rkl, but I guess the 21st Century Atlas will be used more frequently -less number of pages to flip!

By the way, the 21st Century Atlas of the Moon works wonderfully when paired with a moon map, like the Sky & Telescope's Field Map of the Moon or the smaller Sky & Telescope's Moon Map. But I'm not a serious lunar observer (I do deep-sky observing mostly), so it's just an opinion.

Enjoy your lunar exploring!

Clouds tonight and for the next few days but I'm anxious to get the moon atlas out and plan some observing time. Looking forward to checking out some rills... Clear Skies... Tony
