I was a pre-med in college in the early 80's and the school had a C8, which at that time was the largest scope that I had ever used. My first view of the GRS was through that scope.

I had the pleasure of meeting Tom Johnson at PATS in September of 2010. He was so very humble for a man who inspired so many.

R.I.P. Tom. I will be thinking of you the next time I'm out with my C8.

Do to, um, popular request, this thread has been moved back to cats & casses. I've also made it a sticky thread for the time being. I assure you that no disrespect was intended in moving it, it was simply following the usual procedure for this sort of thing.

I still have the original C8 I purchased in late '78. Like others, I drooled over the advertisements, and finally saved enough to but it. It was $709 back then, but I've gotten more enjoyment from that purchase than I could have ever imagined. All thanks to the ambition and brilliant imagination of one single individual. Tom Johnson was a true visionary.

I watched the video over at Celestron "The Path of Light". A brilliant man and a huge contribution to amateur astronomy.

The Celestron brand is one of the major reasons this hobby has the number of amateur astronomers it does. My '81 C8 is a wonderful instrument and is still in use today.

Just to think All this came about just because he couldn'd find a decent telescope for his children. I guess we all are his kids in a small way.
