I have a Dynamax 8 that belonged to my grandfather. It is in the original box. It has been in storage for many years and is is good shape (I think). I would love for one of you enthusiasts to let me know what it is worth. Thank you.

200 US$ or so in good condition. Lot of accessories? Maybe a little more.

Thank you Rod. I'm not sure what all is in the box. I am out of my area of expertise here. Even if I opened the box, I would not know what I was looking at. I appreciate your response!!!!

Wow only $200? I would've guessed more like $400 if optics are good but that's just me...

As I always say: "A used telescope is worth what you can convince somebody to pay for it." B-U-T...Criterion Dynamaxes don't often fetch 400 dineros

hav ta agree with unk Rod... the Criterion Dynamaxes were an odd bunch,, biggest mistake was not conforming to the meade/celestron standardization as well as poor optics in some lead to this scopes demise..
btw I got one of those old black 8" criterion's sitting in the garden shed,, come to think of it-- it sat there for a few years now... got it for free so, nothing lost nothing gained....... kb

Rod may well be correct in his opinion of what the Dynamx is "worth" BUT I would be shocked if it didn't go AT LEAST double that on ebay if you care to offer it there. I've been watching telescope prices there for several years.

When was the scope built? Color of fork arms - grey, powder blue, royal blue or black?
Serial number of scope (4 digit number on aluminum plate attached to base)?
Got a photo of the scope?

have a look at the front of the scope. There should be a ring with a serial number on it.
The 1st two digits are the year of manufacture (of the scope).

It looks an early one going by the declination slow motion - a short tangent arm in a box. The later D8's had a longer tangent arm similar ro the C8 tangent arm.
There should be a six digit number on the ring that holds the corrector plate at the fron of the tube as in the attached photo. The first two digits of this number should indicate the year.

The Grey forked arm ones I have looked through had a lot better optics than the Blue armed ones, I'd say $300.00 on up, Do you have a local Astronomy Club? Someone can help judge the optics. It is in VG condition, if optics test good, I dont see a problem going up close to $400.00, Gill this might be the one for you!! I wish I could buy it right now. Thats just me. Personally I like the old Max's They had a very good drive system, much smoother than Celestron. On the other Hand if the optics test out Poor, I would part it out, because if you are honest about it, you probably won't get $200.00 for it. I'd give $45.00 for the finder alone and another $30.00 for the legs.. Gill is a great guy to answer your questions . He is honest and knows more about those old Girls than anybody I have owned 5 of them, 2 were very Good, 1 is Excellent (a 6" I still own) 1 OK and 1 Poor. Don't let yourself get caught up in the hype. It all comes down to the one YOU have, not the stories told and retold... Good luck and thanks for posting the nice photos, PS: if you could come up with paper work, all accys etc, it will help. Larry

IOW, the ones before their chickens came home to roost in the form of a Celestron lawsuit.

I had one of those. I then sold it and bought a C8. No comparison in the quality of images between the two telescopes. The C8 was a gem!
