Well I've been eyeing the Edge series scopes for quite some time now. So this past Wednesday evening I called Astronomics and order the 8in version . With any luck it should arrive tomorrow, even though tracking shows Tuesday. I would prefer tomorrow as it's supposed to be clear. And next weeks forecast is not looking great. I can't wait to get this scope under the stars and eventually take some pictures with it. I'll probably go the focal reducer route rather than fastar as of now.
I'm pretty new to SCT's. This is my second one, but my first with a good mount to mate it to. So I have a couple questions.
It comes with a 1.25in visual back, however I have a WO 2in dielectric diagonal that has a portion that uncrews from the body. I wonder if it will screw on to the back of the Edge either with the unscrewed portion or the diagonal portion?
I also have this which I bought for some unknown reason a couple years back. It looks to be a 2in visual back. Would it be better to use this + the diagonal, or just the diagonal if it works? How much would the visual back + diagonal increase the focal length (The visual back is nearly 3in's long)?
Next question. Is it possible to use the included finder scope as a guide scope? I'm using an Orion SSAG
Thanks!

I'm not sure if the WO diagonal threads are 2" SCT threads, but I suspect not. It may be difficult to thread on even if the threads mated because of the focuser knob.
I purchased my first Baader Clicklock 2" SCT Visual Back a few months ago and can only rave about it. It will work very well to hold your WO diagonal. The vb you referenced will probably work, but it won't give you a warm fuzzy with the 2" diagonal and a 2" eyepiece. You'll need to be careful how you position the eyepiece or the diagonal could slip around and end up on the ground (I've done it).

Will do. No update from Fedex, so it looks like it will be arriving Monday or Tuesday. If it arrives Monday or Tuesday the best chance for first light will be the following Sunday.

Another new scope?
Your an equipment junkie Zach....
Congratulations! I have always thought that a good C8 is a great all around scope that is capable of doing many things very well.
I have an older model C8 OTA that I use all the time.
It cools fairly quickly and has plenty of resolution on the planets and enough light grasp to see thousands of deep sky objects.
Steve
P.S. Make yourself a dew shield. I'd recommend one about 12 inches long.

Steve, This makes the 20th scope I've owned since 2005. I think I have a problem. I wanted the 11hd but couldn't swing it, so the 8 it was. I imagine it will be a great scope. I plan on going to the local fabrics store to get the materials to make a dew shield. I wonder how long the 8HD will take to cool down going from 20 C to 2 C?

Congratulations on the great new 8HD! I hope you escape the cloudy weather curse.
Regarding the Baader Planetarium 2" Clicklock Clamp for SCT (2" Thread) CLSC-2 -- just a note, although the ad says it's just for the sct scopes, I have this exact 2" clicklock and it came attached to my 2" Baader solar wedge. So if anyone else has this wedge you can easily remove it and use it on your sct. It works great! Clear Skies to you. ---Maya

I'm just curious, how come you keep buying so many scopes?
I have lots of them but I use them for different applications. I had/have a friend that has had 40 something scopes in the last 10 years or so, and for a long time, would just buy a scope, take some pics of himself next to it, then pretty much say the same thing about each of them cuz he really never used them, then sold it, bought another one etc. 40 some odd scopes later, hes the King of the equipment forums (in his own mind) for owning so many scopes, but you get him in the dark and he cant find the Polaris.
I know, its very awkward and strange. VERY STRANGE!!
Just curious, if you've used them before selling them.

Sometimes you have to try different scopes until you find a couple of scopes that really fit your personal requirements. But your right 40 scopes in ten years, and not knowing the night sky is a little strange. Although I don't believe that Zach fits into this category.

Maya- thanks! Yes hopefully they clouds go away soon.
Ralph- I just enjoy telescopes. And I've been given the opportunity in life to use and observe with a bunch of scopes. For me using different scopes helps me learn the sky. Also I'm trying to find the right combo of scopes. I'm close now, but there are still other scopes Id like to own.
Steve- spot on with your assessment.
David- yeah probably not the best idea to count all my scopes. I've heard great things about the Edge scopes, so I'm really excited to get this new scope under some sky.

I'm not familiar with the WO diagonal. Some diagonals come with a SCT back adaptor. But whether it did or not, the adaptor you have should do the trick nicely. You will probably find you can take off the first half of that adaptor and use just the other half.
As for the finder scope, most don't have a 1 1/4" eyepiece you would need for the guider. It looks to be the same model as came with my C6-RGT and if that is the case will not work.

If I can't use the finder scope as a guide I can use my Stellarvue 80/9D.
I have a couple questions though: Is this the kit from ADM I need to get to mount my 80/9D atop my mount?
More importantly is the 80/9D to long of a scope, 30" with focuser racked in, to use atop of the Edge 8? Would it better to find a smaller scope or can I used the 80/9D?
Thanks!

I look forward to your impressions.
The EdgeHD 8" I have has the best optics I have ever had in an SCT.
But it is much more than that. The outstanding off axis performance makes it on par with my 6" APO for general observing. The field is amazingly sharp all the way to the edge of the widest field eyepeices I own.
I no longer use my 6" APO for most general observing unless I have a night where I want to look at wide fields.
IF it fits into the field of the EdgeHD 8" I prefer to use it. Just as sharp, brighter, and a heck of a lot easier to get out of the door.
Everyone should own a C8, but if they can swing the extra dollars, they should make it an EdgeHD 8".
I spent far more money on smaller scopes over the years and have not enjoyed them as much.
Wonderful scope. I can't imagine that you won't be pleased.
Again, looking forward to your impressions.

Zack if possible you should try to use an SCT short adapter for your 2"diagonal. It will make the backfocus shorter as well as the ovwerall focal lenght. This will be important if you ever use a reducer. bc

OAG...trust me Zach. I used to use guide scopes, now only guidescopes when I am using hyperstar. With OAG, mirror flop won't kill your image and flexture is a thing of the past. I will grant you that guiding at 2000mm FL is not the easiest thing to do but I would defintely consider it.

That is correct Zac. I am using the stock finder as a guider when I shoot with the Hyperstar lens. It works perfectly well for this FL.
For other configurations, I am using Lacerta OAG, which is the same thickness of a T-Adaptor and has no flexure at all.
Now that I have sold my C11 Edge and purchased a C8 Edge like you, I will modify the finder of the C8 Edge also. C11 Edge was too heavy for me for setting up and tearing down everyday I will pick up my C8 Edge at NEAF in April. Loooong wait for me Glad you received yours very quickly!

I'm very interested in this since I have the same finder. It did not look to me like it would be useable. What modifications if any did you need to make? And is it reversible (can you put the finder back in the original configuration).

Zach, I have used the Orion OAG and actually, I like it alot for small chips that do not need field flattening or when a Focal Reducer is not needed. When I need a FF/FR, I use this OAG.

Hi Madratter,
I didn't want to hijack Zack's thread with my finder/guider mod but seeing that he also is interested in this solution I will give you a link where you can see more photos of this mod.
It is completely reversible as long as you use SSAG. You don't have to shorten the tube, etc. You just replace the rear lens body with the threaded holder I designed. It comes to focus with the part I produced. However, after some more thinking I have a better solution in mind, (a threaded connection to the camera and the finder) which will make this probably usable at f/7 as well. But for this, you will have to wait until I lay my hands on my new C8 Edge
Here is the link. Hope the pictures will be self explanatory.
Cheers

Zac. it wasn't, because the nose piece had some play and at 1876mm ( @f/6.7 with APCCDT67 reducer) it was showing this flexure which normally wasn't a problem at 560mm fl. This time, I will produce a threaded connector and it will be much better. However, there are things to be done to the finder holder as well. Once I start the mod, I will document every step and share it with you guys.

Hi Zach, your new rig looks really nice. I'm wondering that when you get your TMB130SS back in service, how'll you be dividing your time between it and your new Celestron Edge 8"? I'm asking since every so often I do a little "window shopping" for a complementary scope for my nice 5" achro. SCTs 8-10" are on the list but I'm wondering if an 8" SCT would "compete" instead of "complement" a 5" refractor.
Here's hoping your new scope shows you a lot of the night sky....

Thanks Mark! I'm hopeing that the Edge will be more of a complement than competition. I'm think the views will be close, but my guess is the Edge will when out. Once I get it fixed I'll do side by side comparisons between the two.

Personally, I prefer my C6-RGT 6" achromat over my deforked Powerstar III C8 other than for photography. If I didn't have an observatory, I would feel differently.

That TMB is one sweet scope. I would love to have it. So is the Edge. And both should be excellent both for photography and visual observing. It would be nice to be in your shoes trying to decide which is the nicer of the two.

Yeah it's a good situation to be in. The TMB has already proven itself both visually and photographically. I'm sure the Edge will do great. And once the TMB is fixed, I'll do a comparison between the two. And just for fun I'll through in a Meade 102ED for the comparison. It's a real sweet scope also.

I have the exact same TMB/EdgeHD combination (along with quite a few others). Both are excellent scopes with different uses. To me this is always an apples and oranges comparison. What's wrong with your TMB?

Ed- You're right. It will be like comparing apples to oranges. Though I still look forward to comparing the two.
The o-ring located behind the lenses popped out. It occupies the space where the collimation screws are located. I'm waiting to receive a new o-ring from Astronomics, which is waiting for the o-ring to be sent to them from the factory. Not sure how long it will, but right now I'm going on a month with no TMB.
Here is a link to the CN post I made with pictures.

Well there is something to keep in mind. Hopefully it will not effect collimation. I have never heard anything fun about refractor collimation. Otherwise they are beautiful scopes.

Yeah from what I know my 130SS is the first to do this. If collimation is affected, I'll send to Astronomics to fix. I've attempted to collimate a triplet before and did not succeed. I figure it's better to let the experts handle it.

Hi Ed and Zach. Zach, why not just send your TMS130SS to Astronomics and have them put in the O-ring and make sure it's collimated?
Ed, thanks for saying that about your combo of the TMS130SS and C8HD. How do you use the apo and C8HD? I'm considering a C8HD as an EVENTUAL companion for my 5" achro. A C9.25 (HD or no) is also on that short list (so is a 8-10" Dob of sufficient focal length).

Mark- I wanted to do just that. After talking with Mike from Astronomics he informed me that it was possible that the lens could get damaged in shipping since the o-ring is not perfectly in place. I have a feeling that it will be out of collimation and I will need to send it to them to be fixed.
Johnny- Yeah I could order an o-ring from there, but I'd feel better having the actual o-ring from the factory for the lens.

Best,
I'm visual only (no time for the AP stuff). Sometimes it's a matter of what is easier to take with me and/or haul out. The C8HD in the case is smaller and lighter than the TMB and is really more grab and go. Both are outstanding but for wider fields the TMB obviously wins. I really like SCTs and my C11HD is a favorite, but it's a beast (especially after several shoulder and elbow surgeries). I'm not sure if I have an absolute favorite in my primary scopes right now since I really like all of them. But I love the C8HD for its power and portability. Maybe one of the most important things about the C8HD (or standard C8) is its value per square inch of apature. It really can't be beat in that category.

Ed-Thanks for that info!
I have another question which concerns cool down times. What would be the best way to let the Edge cool down? Place it outside with the front cover on and visual back plugged or have the cover off and the visual back open? I would assume I'm looking at a couple hours to cool down going from inside temp. of 68 F to outside temp of 35-40 F.
Thanks!

Because of the optics that are located inside the baffle tube, leaving it unsealed won't help. With the EdgeHD without using any form of active cooling, the best thing to do is to leave it outside for as long as possible before going out to view. Glass doesn't really transmit heat very well so you may as well leave the corrector cover on as well. To speed things up, you could open up the Fastar hole and leave the corrector cover off, but this may allow dust, etc. to get inside the tube. Other than that, you have to go to active cooling through the vents, the Fastar hole or both. Then you can cut the cooling times way down e.g., if you were normally looking at 2 hours, then you would probably down to 1/2 hour or less). Basically, you become limited by the primary's ability to shed heat rather than the air's ability to tranfer heat.

I cant speak for the C8 Edge, but I do have a standard C8 and a TMB130. On globular clusters and fainer galaxies the C8 is better as would be expected from the larger aperture. Wide field for large open cluster, M31, N, American nebula etc the TMB provides stunning flat field views. On the planets I'd say it's a toss up. The TMB is crisper but the extra aperture of the C8 helps show similar amounts of details in the Jovian cloud belts. Not a big surprise.

I bought some construction paper, fiddled around with making the dew shield, then realized I should probably just buy one. Though I might go back and make one anyhow.
I suspect my views with the Edge will be similar to what you saw when comparing your SCT to the TMB.
Since the TMB is out of service at the moment, the Edge will get plenty of time to prove its worth in both deep sky and planets. I'm really excited to look Saturn through the Edgge
