Pulled the Trigger *REVISED*
      #5846113 - 05/07/13 05:19 PM

Oops. Seems I wasn't aware of image posting guidelines in effect at CN when I posted a pic here. Sorry about that CN moderators.

The gist of it was that I took the plunge and ordered a CGEM DX 1100 HD.

The C14 Edge I looked through was the best scope I had looked through so far !

C11. The C14 was over my budget AND my ability to transport/set up solo, since I would have wanted the CGE Pro mount with that OTA. I went for its smaller brother. This will be my first large telescope and I'm really looking forward to getting acquainted with it. It's shipping today and should arrive in time for a camping trip I'm doing in Sedona on the 18th & 19th. Woo-hoo!!!

Thanks Wes! I do plan on going with a different focuser, but I need to research the pros/cons of a replacement like the Feathertouch or a rear cell unit. Was mirror flop an issue with the stock focuser on your C11 and if so did the Feathertouch mitigate it?

Grats. Im glad you went with the Edge 11. Mirror flop is not an issue with the edge due to the mirror locks.

You will not be disappointed.
Like i mentioned before a different diaganal is worth investing in, and a new focuser is never a bad thing.

And by the way. the picture you posted is of the Edge HD on the PRO mount
Grats again

Thanks Momerath, and you're right about the wrong image! Just changed it to the DX. Wishful thinking must have impaired my judgement.

Also, I meant to say image shift in my question to Wes about the Feathertouch focuser, not mirror flop.

I didn't actually replace it because of mirror flop, the locks work pretty well actually. I replaced it because the stock focuser is coarse and tricky to hit critical focus with. I'm just really picky about focusers. The Feathertouch is so smooth and that 10:1 fine adjuster is just wonderful.
I do have a feeling that I will want to stick a Moonlight or FT Crayford focuser on the back and lock the mirror down for AP when I get further along.

Total disappointment!!! Instead of looking forward to first light with a new telescope this evening I'll have to wait until Friday when a replacement is delivered from Adorama.

Talk about a letdown.

After inspecting the boxes for the tripod and CGEM more closely it looks to me as if they definitely were a customer return that Adorama shipped to me as new. I am REALLY surprised by this. I've done a lot of business with Adorama in the past and they've ALWAYS been top-notch. I am NOT a happy camper right now.

What's this world coming to?

Yep. Only the mount and tripod boxes were strapped. The OTA and counterweight cartons were also in great condition, unlike the other two.

They're shipping a replacement out tomorrow for a Friday delivery, but I'm half tempted to simply return the entire purchase for a refund. I suppose there's a chance that it was a mistake, but if so then someone at the company needs some remedial training in inventory management.

You're probably right Wes. Just a bit angry and very disappointed right now. I've been looking forward to getting the scope delivered for a week. I was also hoping to have a few nights to familiarize myself with it before doing an astronomy weekend in Sedona the 17th-19th and taking it along. Oh well, it is what it is I suppose. I'll survive.

I totally understand how you feel though, its an expensive purchase and it should arrive flawless. I'm sure it was some stocking minion's mistake and not a policy of the company. they will probably whip whoever did it. Ask them to send you a video or something. That should make you feel better.

I do still have my very nice 8" Meade LX10 to use if the 1100 HD logistics fall through for the weekend. It's not the end of the world. And hey, it *IS* American Craft Beer week after all...

The OTA is gorgeous BTW. I've inspected the corrector, the primary, and the inside of the tube carefully and there's no Styrofoam or other foreign matter. Very pristine.

Wes, didn't you pick up a Baader Clicklock VB for your 1100? Which one did you get?

Yes, I bought one from Eddgie actually. Its the 3.25" to 2" model. I also, after much angst and research, ordered a Baader 2" clicklock dielectric diagonal last night. I'm just not feelin the thumbscrews.

Should be a very solid setup for visual!

To be fair not much more than I was expecting. Anything I was considering was going to be pricey, but I wanted this to be a solid rig to match the quality of the OTA. I've already got a feathertouch micro focuser and a TEMPest fan kit. All I need is a good vb, diagonal and some solid EPs and I'm set.

That is a DX tripod. I just went out and looked at mine and they are similar. altho it is missing the locking screws.

Its a bummer you didnt get it in time for your trip, but you know what they say... Good things come to those who wait. The waiting is the hard part tho.

Momerath, frozen.kryo is correct. The tripod I received is most definitely *not* the CGEM DX/Pro unit. It's a different color and a different design. I'd take some more pics if I didn't already have it packed up for its return trip to Adorama.

Look at the orange feet. The dx's feet are slightly bulbous/rounder. The photo posted by dpippel shows feet that are perfectly conical (not bulbous at all).

I stand my ground. It's a cge tripod.

Thanks. I'm sure you're not envious of the bill though! This was a huge purchase for me. I've just come back to the hobby after an almost 20 year hiatus. Back in the '80s I observed regularly, had a Celestron C6 reflector, was a member of the AAVSO, and ran an astronomy BBS call The Event Horizon. After moving from the west coast of Florida to Arizona in the early 90s I dropped out of amateur astronomy. I've been dipping my toe in the pool for a couple of years now, and last month picked up an absolutely mint condition 8" Meade LX10 from a local retiree. The bug bit me full-force again after one night behind the eyepiece. So I decided to get a truly modern instrument with more aperture that could serve as a solid AP platform if I decide to go down that road in the future. After a lot of research I finally settled on the CGEM DX 1100 HD and can't wait to get it out under the stars for the first time! Unfortunately there's this little bit of tripod business to sort out first...

Yes, it's unfortunate with the tripod issue. Nevertheless, it's an excellent instrument. I'm angling for a C11 edge myself.

You mentioned doing AP down the road. Well, just so you know, your wallet will be crying out for mercy. I know mine is.

Hahaha, I hear that!
I'm actually getting out of some other hobbies to be able to afford this one. I'm selling my guitars and acoustic drums and two of my competition centerfire rifles. That should more than pay for whatever I need. One rifle paid for my Edge 11 and accessories so far!

Its a good thing that my hobby gear has good resale value!

UPDATE: Adorama shipped me a replacement CGEM DX tripod and mount (supposedly) on Tuesday and sent it 3 Day UPS so I could have it in time for my weekend observing trip to Sedona. They informed me that they couldn't ship JUST the tripod because the CGEM DX is sold a kit. So I had to pay for the replacement up front and they said they would refund the second purchase when the used and incorrect tripod was shipped back to them.

Well, the UPS guy stopped by this evening and all he had was the MOUNT. NO TRIPOD! He had ONE pickup order and one return label, so I gave him the original mount to send back to NJ. And here I am, STILL stuck with a used, old CGE model tripod and unable to use my new C11 on the last weekend before full moon. Adorama screws up AGAIN.

I'm about done with this. I emailed them a nasty-gram and am calling first thing Monday morning (because of course, they were closed by the time delivery was made and are not open on Saturday) to get this straightened out. If they're not willing to overnight a new tripod to me on Monday then at this point the whole shebang is going back at their expense for a full refund. I'll take my business elsewhere. Even if they get this taken care of on Monday I'll never order from them again.

Here I was, looking forward to getting my first modern instrument and mount and seeing the night sky with new eyes through a relatively large aperture scope. Instead the experience has turned into one big negative cluster "f". Looking at this stack of boxes in my office is just plain depressing.

You know I kinda had a poor experience with them recently too. I ordered a Baader clicklock 2" diagonal, which they said they had 6 in stock. 4 days go by and I get an email from them that the item is actually back-ordered and it will take 14-21 days to get it. Um... no.

I cancelled the order and bought from High Point Scientific and got it this morning... 2 days later!

At this point I'm crossing Adorama off of my list until they can get their act together.

Vote with your hard-earned $$$ folks.

UPDATE: Adorama is overnighting a CGEM DX tripod to me at their expense for delivery tomorrow morning. I had to speak with a CS supervisor and explain the situation all over AGAIN to get that far. They still wouldn't ship without charging me for the replacement.

I'm not impressed. We'll see if the 3rd time's the charm. Perhaps I'll FINALLY be able to set up my 1100 HD tomorrow night but at this point I'm not holding my breath. Regardless, Adorama has definitely lost a customer.

It's a beast to be sure. Just think what the CGE Pro must be like. Yikes!

I'm just glad this ordeal is OVER, barring any issues at the eyepiece over the next few nights that is. Believe me, I'll be going over it with a fine-toothed comb. But really I'm just looking forward to observing with the scope! First target this evening will be Saturn, which is what got me hooked on this hobby so many years ago when I saw it for the first time through a cheap 60mm Tasco refractor from K-mart.

Well, then look at the Moon! And Saturn should still look great. The Hercules Cluster is nearly straight up around midnight right now and looks wonderful.

I've found that the better you polar align the scope, the better the Go-Tos and tracks are. I have seen objects "centering" at the edge of the FOV when I don't get it dead-on. Its not a big deal for visual use because you can easily center them again, but they will drift away if you want to view for a while. For imaging, it'll be an issue... So much to learn!

I ordered the Celestron polar scope last night, hopefully that will help. I will let you know.

HAVE FUN!!!!!

Oh I will, and of COURSE I'm going to look at the Moon! I wasn't complaining. It's not like moonlight is going to ruin the pristine dark sky site that is downtown Phoenix. I'll make due, and I'll look forward to the four day trip I'm taking to the north rim of Grand Canyon on July 4th weekend.

As for tonight, right on queue, a bunch of thin high altitude clouds are moving in. No one is immune.

Definitely let me know what you think of the PA scope.

I hope you have a moon filter. I thought my eyes were gonna come out of my head when I looked at the moon without one in mine.

I have also come to realize one more short coming of the DX mount. It seems you can only get 22lb counterweights. I am attaching another small refracter to mine but could not find lighter counterweights that support the larger bore of the counterweight shaft. Since the load capacity of the mount is ~50lbs this would exceed capacity. You can always make something tho. Just something to think about.

Congrats on the new scope. I hope my earlier comments helped and were accurate.

My thoughts on a lighter counterweight. Why can you not get a lighter counterweight from celestron or where ever(used) and just make the hole larger by drilling it out to fit the larger diameter of the shaft? Just a thought.

Nice rig and great photo's. The DX is a beast for sure. The scope itself is great, especially when the seeing allows those 1100 optics to run. I'd say maybe get the rear vent fans from deep space products and maybe a better vis back, mine frustrated me a bit. That said the best night out with mine was the second night when I didn't have any of those things

I believe that you can use Losmandy counterweights (for the GM 8, G-9 and G-11 mounts) that fit the 1.25" shaft. They have 7#, 11# and 21# here...

http://losmandy.com/access.html

If you're uncertain, give Losmandy a call.

They did, and they were. I really appreciate your input about the scope and mount. Speaking of which, it looks like Wes may have found a solution to your counterweight issue. Let us know if it works.

BTW, I did burn my retina out on the Moon last night! I ended up using my polarized sunglasses and it worked. Sort of. A filter is near the top of my list for lunar observing.

I'm definitely picking up the fans sometime soon, and DSP just happens to be right here in town. Due to Wes constantly twisting my arm to spend MORE money on a $4400 scope rig , I have the 3.25" Baader Clicklock VB ordered already. The Celestron 2" diagonal that comes with the 1100 HD is a pain to position and pretty cheaply constructed. For now I'm using my Meade 2" dielectric/VB which allows for east rotation with thumb screws on the VB. The Baader should be easier to use and much more secure.

Despite some cloud cover and rather poor seeing last night, I was able to spend about 3 hours with the CGEM DX 1100 Edge HD. So far I'm LOVING the scope! After doing a rough polar alignment on the mount and loading up the OTA, it took me two attempts at the Two Star Alignment to get the goto dialed in well enough to place objects near the center of the 90x field in a 31mm Baader Hyperion Aspheric.

The clouds were practically gone by 21:30. My first target was the Moon, and the detail that showed through the swimming atmosphere during pockets of stability was amazing. Using the 23mm Luminos at 122x, the lunar surface was crisp and sharply defined when seeing allowed. Shadows were inky black but not without detail.

Slewing the scope to Saturn next revealed impressive levels of detail and color during brief moments of atmospheric stability. The Cassini Division was very sharply defined as were some of cloud belts on the planet, and color differences on the disc were very evident at both 122x and at 215x in a 13mm TeleVue Nagler Type 6. Rhea, Titan, Tethys, Enceladus, and Dione were easily seen, although Tethys was winking in and out a bit.

After the brief solar system tour I hopped over to Mizar, which was brilliant, then to Algieba in Leo, which appeared very beautiful and jewel-like in the C11. Just gorgeous! Next up were a couple of Messier objects. First the Owl Nebula, but I knew it was futile with the amount of light pollution in my sky. The Beehive was nice as well, although a much better binocular object. The Ring Nebula however was ghostly and bright in the eyepiece, and looked particularly nice at 122x in the 23mm Luminos. Since I was in neighborhood I slewed the scope to Epsilon Lyrae. The Double Double looked outstanding and I enjoyed viewing it at a few different mags.

So, there's my first light report. I have a lot to learn about this scope and mount and I'm looking forward to that process. All in all I'm VERY happy with the instrument.

The only two "negative" things that I noticed last night were the typical SCT image shift when focusing, and "clicks" coming from the declination axis when adjusting it with the hand controller. It only seemed to happen at the moment the motor engaged. I'll have to keep monitoring that situation. Has anyone else with a CGEM DX mount experienced this?

Nice one, I've got the Baader VB and Diagonal, really makes the scope sweet to use. I picked up the focal reducer, and Cool Edge cooler, at that point I began looking at what TAK add ons cost, made me feel better

The DX is a great mount, damn heavy but really solid with it. I guess we'd all like a mach 1 but otherwise its a great match for that scope.

It seems like a very solid platform, particularly for visual, and I really really love the C11 Edge HD OTA. Optically it's just wonderful. And I just *know* that I'll eventually get the Baader diagonal. I just have to get over the price tag.

I forgot to mention another invaluable accessory. the orion wifi module. I dont think i will ever use a telescope without this thing again. Just hook it up and use your computer, iphone, android ipad, whatever. works great with sky safri.

To stop the DEC clicking I had to remove the rear safety screw on the dovetail plate, and slide the OTA further forward in the saddle. With the larger EP's and diagonals it is difficult to balance in DEC. Once i achieved a good balance in DEC the motor clicking/backlash sound stopped.

Hope this helps

Yeah careful balancing is critical on these mounts. I'm considering getting one of the Losmandy dovetail counterweights to help balance in DEC since the scope is very back heavy with these ginormous EPs and 2" diagonals.

Its only money!

I purchased a Losmandy DEC counterweight system. It attaches to the front of the OTA on the dovetail plate, and comes with a 2.5 lb weight. This was a must for me. When attaching the .7x reducer and a dslr to the back, it was near impossible to balance in DEC. They were back ordered but Ill let you know how it works when it comes in.

Best of luck with your Losmandy counterweights Momerath. One issue I didn't foresee with the GEM is the constant balancing act. The balance of the system changes drastically if you go from a 1 lb, 2" eyepiece to a 1.25" that weighs a only few ounces, necessitating adjustment. Not quite as forgiving as a fork.

Another thing I hadn't counted on - no setting circles. Unless there's an aftermarket solution I'm not aware of, the CGEM DX is incapable of being used manually.

BTW Wes, I ordered the TEMP-est Cat 2 fans from Ed today. I'll be picking it up from his shop once he's got his next run completed. You're right, it's only money!!!!

Yes setting circles would have been nice. I am mostly AP with visual as the telescope cools down. so the counter weights would work good for me. Also I only have 2" EP's.

you guys have me eyeing the TEMpest. I am trying to hold out the will power. I was also eyeing a hyperstar today. Told my wife it would be a nice christmas present

give me the strength to resist!!!!!

Heading out here this afternoon for a night of observing and camping:

Sentinel, AZ Observing Site

This will be my first dark site experience with the C11 and I'm *really* stoked!!! Too bad it's gonna be 106 today.

I'll be north of Goldwater. Or not. Looks like some high cloudiness is rolling through until tomorrow. Of course. We may bail.

Wish I had some dark skies like that. Best I can get is blue up by upper whitewater falls in north carolina. otherwise its orange and yellow for 50 miles in all directions

Sorry to hear it Momerath. One of the advantages to living in the southwest is the high percentage of nights with clear skies. It's not all rosy though - we do have seeing issues here. You should come out!

Anyway, I decided to bag observing tonight. Too many clouds to drag all the gear 100 miles out and back for questionable conditions. I'm rescheduling for tomorrow night when the forecast calls for completely clear skies and taking a half-day off of work on Monday so I can camp and come back in the morning. I'm not TOO disappointed.

Yeah I hear you. We have bad skies here due to a massive fire in Castaic. I haven't been able to set up for more than a week. It was supposed to be excellent seeing too.

That's too bad Wes! "The Curse" is truly a real phenomenon, isn't it? I hope conditions improve for you soon so you can that scope out!
