Big Bang Theory may have an SCT scene
      #5862153 - 05/15/13 01:05 PM

We all love the show and always notice when there are scopes in the background as a prop but they never do anything with them. Maybe that will change in the season finally on 5/16. Maybe it will just last 2 seconds maybe more. In any event what scope is this? A Celestron 8 Nextar???

On one episode Raj, Howard and Lenord took the SCT to a park (I guess to look at the stars BEFORE the meteor shower), while Penny remains home, slips in the shower and Sheldon has to take her to the hospital. One of the funniest episodes in my opinion.

No, they took the SCT to observe the shower. I hate to criticize because BBT comes much closer to getting things right in astronomy than most other shows. But they still manage to miss details. That goes for science in academe generally.

Still, minor quibbles. Them getting absolutely toasted by the brownies of a couple of aging school teachers gets them a pass for any mis-use of equipment.

Adam,
Yes another SCT was used as a prop and barely visible. The science was all wrong here as a large telescope is needed for this type of measurement. Still one of my favorite scenes.

That's what I remember. Raj was watching a TV show through an apartment window across the street.

Aha! It was a CPC. I knew I saw a CPC on BBT, but couldn't remember where. Everyone knows about the Nexstar, but I swore over and over I saw a CPC.

Too bad they set it up wrong. They mounted the OTA upside down. The focus knob and the retaining knob on the mount go on bottom. They also connected the hand controller to the wrong port and didn't use the tripod spreader plate. Now novice Nexstar users will unwittingly follow suit.

I wonder if they'll say what she's supposed to be looking at? If I had to guess I would say Saturn. But that gives the writers to much credit to know that that planet is actually in season... Any other guesses???

The SCT with the dark reddish-orange barrel (seen mostly in Raj's appartment) is one of the early single-arm NexStar 8's which became available after the original single-arm NexStar 5 came out. There was a thread about these scopes in the Off-topic Observatory forum quite some time back. A dark-tubed Celestron NexStar 4" refractor also was seen in some episodes, along with an small 2.4 inch dark blue-tube refractor (probably a low-end Meade) and an unidentified silver-tubed 3 or 4 inch aperture refractor. In the episode where they were in the desert to watch a meteor shower, there was one that looked like an old Dynamax 8 SCT, but the lighting wasn't terribly good so it's tough to tell. A Celestron CPC 8 SCT also was in the episode where they were attempting a lunar ranging experiment. Clear skies to you.

The refracter is the Nexstar 102 SLT.

I bought it for my kids a few years ago, then when BBT had it I showed my daughter that they have her scope on BBT. She loves that show.

Also, when they were using it, they were holding the EP to their eye instead of just moving their eye to the EP. (cant remember the episode)

Thats my Favorite show. I remember them using the 102mm Refractor on the rooftop. The CPC is in Raj's Apartment..
Still better than the Pizza commercial! looking through the upside down Newtonian!!! I wonder why it is so hard for people
to figure out???
I guess they don't have our Inductive Reasoning Skills.

Considering his profession on the show (meaning he should know better), why did he just have her look through the window glass with the apartment lights on?? LOL

Not to mention she was viewing the ISS which would have flown past the scope's FOV in a split second.
