NGC1499 the start of my first mosaic UPDATE
      #5519843 - 11/14/12 05:26 PM

Let's see how long my patience holds on while I attempt spending probably a couple of months completing one project! This is two panels in HA of what I think will be 6 panels unless I want to go out further, but we'll see how it goes. I started grabbing SII last night as well and tried for OIII a couple of nights ago and saw absolutely nothing so I may have to pump up the exposure to 20 or 30 minutes to see if I can pull anything out in that channel. Pretty happy with what I have so far in HA so I'll update my Astrobin site as I progress.

Thanks for looking!

Two more HA panels added from last night. Going to grab the last HA panel and the 2nd SII panel tonight. So going with 5 panels in each channel.

Nice start on your project. Enjoy the ride! Just think how it will look once completed and on the wall above your couch .

Great start, I am still planning on doing my first one when I get my SV80 back.

This is going to look amazing when it's done if this start is any indication!

Thanks Chris/Mark! Stitching them together so far has worked well with PS CS4 photomerge. As long as I get the histograms fairly close on the different sections then photomerge does a good job of balancing and stitching together. I plan on using the HA for the L channel and will do a Tone Map to add color once I get the other channels.

Thanks Sal! Looks like this weekend will be one of little sleep as I try to grab as many sections as possible. Since I'm averaging 6 hours for each HA panel I hope to get the HA done at least!!

Can't wait to see the finished product! I remember working on a mosaic for this last year. I only got 4 panels of Ha and decided I was too impatient for anything more. If I were to try again I would probably go for a HaRGB image. As it is, I'll probably do this with my T2i instead of the ATIK because I don't have the patience. Here's my 4 panel Ha version, I did the mosaic by hand because I didn't know how to use the photomerge in CS4 and I didn't have any other registering software. Learned alot, don't ever want to do it again.

Thanks Phil! Yeah, patience is tough when you see Orion rising and there are so many good targets to shoot! Tonight I finished the last panel of HA and I'm shooting the 2nd SII panel, should get the 3rd SII tomorrow night. Now I can see the benefits of a large format chip for certain objects!

The start of your mosaic looks great!

Warren,
I call it 'Imaging ADD'. I probably won't being doing any multi-night projects until I get my observatory built.

Yeah, to fight that every once in a while I'll do a bunch of short exposures on as many objects as I can in one night!

That is, and going to be, one stunning image! Nothing beats the resolution of mosaic, hard work though.

Thanks JP! It is fun to just scan the image and look at some of the small features that show up.

Edit:

Finished HA over the weekend and 3/5 done with SII. Here is the finished HA mosaic, 5 panels, so far 27.5 hours of HA and 13.5 hours in SII. Next update will be when it is finished!!

Hi Warren,

I'm with JP. Nothing can beat the resolution of a mosaic.
But yes, it is hard to get one. In most cases, the weather
is the killer...
So I hope you can finish this great work...

Regards

Immo

Hi Warren - it looks great.
A little suggestion to save lots of time:
Since the details come from the Ha channel as luminance...you can do the detailed mosaic in Ha with your primary scope and the O3 and S3 do with a smaller scope with a wider FOV so you won't need the mosaic...

It works very well...

Anyway great project.

Kfir

Uh-oh! I better get busy and finish mine! I've lost steam on processing; still collecting data, but not processing much! Maybe I'm subconsciously preparing for an extended cloudy spell! They call that winter don't they?

Good start!

Steve

Hmmmm, maybe I'll try a shot with my 50mm finder scope just to see how it looks since I'm going to blur the chrominance anyway, thanks for the suggestion! (no other smaller scope in my arsenal!)
