Zeiss ID needed, This could be interesting.... !
      #2271194 - 03/20/08 09:11 PM

I had set up my scope in the front yard, early one evening, and a neighbor, whom I barely knew, asked If I knew anything about German optics. I was honest, and said " I know Leica and Zeiss, are quality optics, and I don't know much else." One conversation led to meeting another friend.....you've all been there, following a lot of dead end searches.

This time it finally led to a...stash.... of grey boxes in a dusty warehouse.
The cardboard boxes were German and had a DDR address. Each grey spotting scope looked very military, and was shipped in a brown leather zippered pouch. It also had a wooden tripod with some serious grey metal tips and a small machined alt-az mount that fitted to the spotting scope, Zeiss Jena logo. Aseola I think was the name on the paperwork. 26 x 63mm . The eyepiece could be removed from the the helical focuser and looked to be .965. The scopes is built like a M1 tank, with a rifle vee and post sight. Can someone give an ID and estimated value. The owner wants to trade the entire stash... for some very high end collectable WO, UO and TV eyepieces.

No photos, yet, but I'd recognize one if I saw it again on the web. I can trade for one, then trade for the rest, if the price is right.

Thanks guys.

The Zeiss Asiola is a classic spotting scope for ornithologists made by Carl Zeiss Jena .
The lens is a cemented C-Type with a aperture of 63mm like the telementor, the focal length is the half of telementor, 420mm.
Usually there are Zeiss orthoscopic 0.96" eyepieces with 10mm or 16mm or 25mm focal length.
You can find Asiolas by some auctions in German ebay.

Attention, SHARP STUFF!
Kindly regards from Germany

Sounds exactly what Gerd said. I have one which I purchased on the bay about 2 years ago. Very sharp and high contrast. I paid about $550 complete with the tripod in minty condition. Probably overpaid a little but...I had Zeiss fever!
BTW, anybody know how to remove the Asiola eyepiece? Mine won't just pull out and I don't see any set screws. I'd like to use the ortho in my AS63.

Great Info everyone, you all nailed it! Danke Gerd. Goat leather container, (Ziegenlederbehälter) very unique. Now, the tough part, can I sell them as NOS ( New Old Stock) to help support my hobby costs? The one I saw had a medium weight wooden tripod with serious metal tips...

Hi all,

If I do this, they will be sold at a price where I can sell them out fast. The seller is however is looking at the original invoice from 1970 and adding in inflation on the dollar. I have assured him that these scopes are NOT worth $4800, no way ,no how, not ever. I have told him that current Zeiss spotting scopes are between $1.6 to $2.8 K and these must sell for less than that. There is some value to being Zeiss and minty and 38 years old, and Jena DDR stamped but its still a 63mm f/6.6 scope and that is only worth so much. It will be interesting...

I've got one home now and I'll try to post some pic's soon.. The wooden tripod is a real jewel with a shiny finish and wonderful grain highlights, and the optics, well...its a minty Zeiss Jena and its ....stunning, with great contrast, Razor sharp with a focused view that just pops into your eye...everything I expected and much more.

The Asiola is really a classic scope.
Yours is a very late one, because I read "Made in Germany"
under the "Carl Zeiss Jena" label.
I think it is made in the early nineties and it is in a mint condition -very nice!

A example of a very early Asiola you can see as a finderscope
on Ed Turners 9,5 inch Zeiss from 1933.

Kindly regards

For what it's worth, I was at Scope City today and they have them for sale for $999. The store manager told me that Zeiss comes out with this scope every so often and that it's built exactly like the very first one ever made. The wooden tripod and simple az mount looked extremely well made as did the scope.

Interesting...they were at Scope City 3 weeks ago for $599, now $999. Last year $1999. I think $999 is a great price, but glad I got one for $599. Great scopes!

Scope City had a sale where they dropped the price. It's back up again. At $599 I'd have been interested. The scope appears to take 0.96 eyepieces and others can be used. I was told the one Scope City is selling only comes with one eyepiece. The magnification level of 26x means this is not a very powerful scope. And I was told it uses a porro prism whereas most modern day spotting scopes use roof prisms.
